It's actually called "red lichen" and Florida is it's primary habitat, with it extending into other southern states as well. Just fyi.

The pinkish red stuff you saw was a type of Lichen! Lichen is one of those interesting nature things that not a lot of people pay attention to. Around where I live, you typically see white or grayish-green lichen on the trees with black being seen more and more. Lichen is one of the biggest indicators of air quality, as they are pretty much up-taking all of the atmospheric nutrients.

What a fascinating and somewhat eerie video...the alligator ?! Swamp and pink tree... I love the thimble! I think all we ladies watching love the thimble! This all lends itself to the background of a good Southern Gothic story!!,...." intent on sewing the clothes for her soon to.be born baby, Evangeline suddenly noticed the lengthening shadows and realized she had failed to bring the milk cow Bessie in for the night. Struggling to her feet , Evangeline let the baby dress slide to the floor and heard her thimble hit the floor. She hurried to the door and stood in the doorway shuddering. The evening dampness of the swamp wrapped itself around her shoulders. " Bessie ! BESSIE" She cried and waited, heart pounding for a sound of lowing or Bessie's bell . AH! There it was ..clang...clang...and then ..the sound of frantic bellowing and pounding hooves, a large body crashing through the brush.and fading into the distance! ..Evangeline knew what lay that way ..the dreadfull swamp, that terrifying ghastly pink tree ! But she had to bring the cow home! Heedless, Evangeline plunged into the cypress tangle , stumbling o n her skirts..and in the distance, the bellowing of sn injured cow and a terrifying growling. Did alligators growl? Oh how she wished Abe had not left her alone in this swamp all these long days! And without even a gun to defend herself ...or any buckshot even had he left he a gun..all the shot wasted in his drunken target shooting binges...and not even an armadillo in the soup pot for supper! "

I found the armadillo den interesting. I didn't realize they were in the United States. We have an opossum living in a hole under an outbuilding and I have seen it many times on trail cam carrying a ball of leaves with it's tail and it closes off it's hole the same as the armadillo.
