Early 18th century. England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time consuming for Sarah, Abigail steps into the breach to fill in as the Queen’s companion. Their burgeoning friendship gives her a chance to fulfil her ambitions and she will not let woman, man, politics or rabbit stand in her way.

‘Keep the silhouette completely accurate, historically ... but then play around with the texture and colour. ... you can (then) invent the entire world, and push it, visually.” (Costume Designer, Sandy Powell), A transferable, thematic device, for “fictional” writing?

Except today its reversed. The Blue funds wars, wants more war and the Red wants to defund current wars and avoid starting new wars.

all the inaccuracies in this film and you chose the denim? not the lesbian Queen Anne, or the Duchess of Marlborough looking like a ghost pirate?

@@tut4825 It doesn't need to be at all, this is critique and preference. The converse sneakers snuck into a brief shot in Marie Antoinette was cool, in contrast this just looked like a kitsch mess of a film.

Basically something that you’re not interested in so don’t ever comment like that ever again because 1.) You’ll be lectured by other commenters and 2.) It shows your personality and your insensitivity.

Esme - Opinions will be opinions but I guess not everyone has the capacity to understand sophisticated and complex dramas. With the way you speak I don't think you could understand the excitement of period films or would take any interest in a historical film, at least period historical films that are expressed this way. Which I think is a tragedy but I guess it's just a difference of interest. You can think it's boring but I think you could at least acknowledge this film's ambition, creativity, sophistication, and complexity.

I'll note that the people responding to you are pretentious assholes. I'll also note that your perspective of a movie you haven't seen is rather close-minded and your "criticism" isn't very well-thought out.

Roberto Horacio De Lugo You are rude. What's funny is that people can't make a point without being rude. You think that makes your point stronger? I stated what I observed. It's clear that most of the people of today are not very interested in historical/period films, especially younger people. And I do think it is tragic, not because someone does not like what I like but because I genuinely find it tragic to think that no one can find intrigue in a historical/period film. At least this film specifically. Does that mean every historical/period film is automatically good? Of course not. I'm not biased either. And you can objectively find something good quality-wise even if you don't find interest in it. I mean that person said "AF", in caps. A comment of no substance. Media has made people's mind regress. The way people speak even. People's interests too have shifted. You won't find many people who find historical/period films exciting either. And well I think it sucks because I honestly think people would be missing out on something that dares you to question human nature. If there is too much dialogue even, people will lose focus. People are entitled to their own opinion after all. And I stated mine. But objectively this film has all the qualities that make a recipe for a really good film. You don't have to see a movie to make up your mind about it despite how it sounds. If you don't like a specific genre or if the plot doesn't interest you, most people wouldn't bother after the trailer. And by the sound of it, this film just may not be for this person. Not everyone understands the intrigue for a film like this, possibly because it is too perplexing for some to understand. It seems people are more interested in what is commerical or popular. Maybe people can only focus on what is easy to understand. Maybe plots need to be more obvious for some to be intrigued. It is what it is no matter how tragic I think it is. I guess that is just a reflection of me and my outlook on things.
