I was looking forward to seashell hunting during a negative low tide because last winter I noticed the tides were so much lower than we had ever seen them but we had no idea why! Only recently have I discovered what negative low tide is so of course I wanted to share what I had learned. Being from Northern NJ the tides were easy to figure out but down here they really confused us because we would be shelling at high tide but the tide actually looked really low and we didn't understand what was going on. Turns out the tides down here have 2 low tides and 2 high tides each day and after looking at a chart it started to make more sense.
Winters down here have some really low tides, so low they are actually negative low tides. Looking at a tide chart helped me see the pattern and now it all makes much more sense!
We found some great finds during our first negative low tide shelling excursion. I hope the winter continues to surprise and delight us!

It was a great shell haul. Pretty Florida fighting conch. I especially loved the live one. I've never seen a live one before. That was great and I really liked the hermit crab. I love the negative low tides. I go to the Lovers Key dog beach and walk straight out from the beach to what I call the sand bar and it is an awesome place to find loads of extra pointy crown conchs. The large shark eye was beautiful. I am totally guilty of still keeping "Rookie Shells" lol I can't help it they are all beautiful. I finally filled a 5 gallon bucket of "retune shells" and dropped them off back at the beach this morning. Minus 2 I just couldn't let go. lol Thanks for sharing your walk, tips and treasures with us.

The crown conch seem to prefer the muck so I'm not surprised you find them over by the dog beach. Great idea to go over there and walk around! We've been to Bunche at neg low tide and I was able to walk over to some of the other places that are usually not accessible - no shells, but I'll usually find a critter or two. And now I'm wondering what other little places are accessible during neg low tide...I'll have to check out a map. Thanks so much for coming along with me!

Love those Tulips and Murax! Of course, I love them all. Is there an easy way to tell the Tulips from the Nutmegs! The only difference I can see is the color... Im with you on the fighting Conchs...I love them too. I really enjoyed this video. Not only was it fun and interesting, but very informative with your explanation of minus low tide. Oh how I wish I could go there! We have beautiful beaches here in California also but not so many shells or the same kind. I noticed you didn't find any Scallop shells... I think the selection of colors is amazing and beautiful! I would have a hard time passing any of them by, and same with all the others. As you can tell, I am absolutely fascinated with shells!! Anxious for your next video.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
The nutmegs are very distinct - they are almost always on the smaller side and always that orangy and white color. They also have a bumpy surface. The tulips are smoother, have more of a variety of colors and will get much larger. In an upcoming I'll find two and I'll compare them for you. Other people may have the same question! Welcome to my channel!! I've only been on the East Coast of Florida twice for shelling, but I suspect that the West Coast probably has better shells. I don't know this for sure, but when I research different beaches, Sanibel always pops up as a "must visit" beach for shelling. Plus the East Coast surf is pretty rough, so I wonder how many shells can stay intact compared to the Gulf. I'd like to go back and check out a few more beaches. If you haven't seen my East Coast vids I made 2 - the beaches were gorgeous! Hobe Sound and Coral Cove Park.

What is the best time of year to come shelling? Where do you find the biggest shells and cowries? Atlantic vs Gulf?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
"They" say that winter is the best time to find shells but honestly I find them all year long. I've only shelled over on the Atlantic twice and we did find a trivia (looks just like a cowrie). We asked a local on the Atlantic side where we should go to find shells and they told us the West Coast! I'm not a shelling expert (yet) but I partial to the West Coast.

Hi I noticed that you are not squeemish at all of the "critters" along the beach. Have you been a beach lover for a long time? There are many times that i am shelling but scared of picking up things in the ocean not knowing what it was first or if it could harm me! Lol

I have been going to the beach every weekend for a little over a year now, but I have always loved the beach. I am very curious by nature, so my curiosity usually wins over any sqeemish feelings I might have. I love learning and checking out all the things I find so much, I'm going to study to become a Master Naturalist. Then I'll really know more about what I find at the beach! I hope my videos help explain more and you won't be as scared next time you see some of these shells and critters at the beach :) Thanks for watching!

Have never heard of a negative low tide. Wonder if they occur on the ocean side (East coast)?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
In doing my research it said the further away you are from the equator the more drastic the tides are, which made me think of that town on the eastern border - can't remember if it's US or Canada but the tides will get so low the boats sit on the bottom of the bay because the tides goes out so drastically. These negative low tides down here seem to only happen in the winter. AND....there will be "high" tides here that are really "low" tides because of the height of the water. It's so crazy!!

strange question for you.......how much does an average pen shell weigh?
@SWFBeachLife

I've never weighed them but they are light. The shell is very thin so there isn't a lot of bulk to them. I would guess a couple of ounces.

Why are all of the sand dollars so dark?

The ones over here are dark purple when they are alive. Once they die, they will start to lose their color. They may be found dark purple, gray or white - depending on how long it's been sitting on the beach or in the sun.

May i ask a question? I am a young shell hunter, where should I go find some shells in hawaii if u have been there? Because I love collecting them, I have tons of small and broken ones, I don't really know why i still get the broken ones tho haha.
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife 3 жыл бұрын
You can ask me as many questions as you would like! I have never been Hawaii, but I do plan on going there one day. It looks beautiful! I read a quick article that says it's kind of hard to find shells on the beach in Hawaii and that a lot of people find them snorkeling or kayaking. But they also said your best chance to find shells are at Hanalei Bay in Kauai and Hapuna Beach on the Big Island are the best spots for finding shells. Broken and small shells are better than no shells at all right? I'm going to make a video for my subscribers and include pictures of shells from my viewers. Maybe you can send me a few pics! Thank you for watching!

@@SWFBeachLife Yeah, it is actually hard to find full shells, to be honest. My mom said told me when she was in the Philippines about 15 years ago, there was a beach that had TONS of shells like you can't even see the sand! But she doesn't know if it's still like that.

You are blessed to live close enough to the best beaches and find beautiful shells. But I have to say I get some anxiety watching your videos because of all the shells you don't pick up. I live in Houston and Galveston, Bolivar & Surfside beaches have their native shells, but not the beauties you find in Florida. I plan to move there when I no longer have my mother to care for. Great videos though. My anxieties are my own issue and no fault of yours. Just sayin.

I know exactly what you mean about the shells I don't pick up - that was me when I first started! I would pick up everything and anything but since I've been to the beach so many times I'm getting just a little bit pickier about what I pick up. Last Saturday I went shelling and in the beginning I wasn't finding much - someone said there was a "treasure trove" of shells and when we looked it was just clams and shells I normally wouldn't collect but it reminded me that people who don't get to shell as much as I do have a different opinion about what shells are good :) They're all good, I'm just a little more selective because I'm so lucky to live where I do. I hope you get to move here too one day. ❤
