"I want to be a Strawhat pirate". Good news, you enjoyed the adventures with us so you are already a Strawhat pirate! But seriously, that's one of the most special things OP has, it makes you feel part of the crew, like you went to all those adventures with the characters. It's such a feel-good and touching story at the same time and as someone who's been reading it for many, many years, it's so good watching others fall in love with it. i don't know how far into the manga/anime you may be,. So, without putting out a spoiler, you know exactly why he doesn't fight with his hands much later, specifically why he doesn't use a sword. @@MrsuperdestroyerThat's symbolic actually, Zeff is a cook and a pirate. Then they both got stranded in an island and gave all the food to Sanji. Cut your arm and eat it means you can continue being a Pirate (with a hook on your hand), cut your leg and eat it means you can continue being a Chef. I love that their is deeper meaning behind Nami's infatuation with wealth and money than just greed. At the time 100k more berries could have changed Bellamere's fate. Which in the One Piece universe isn't a ridiculously expensive amount at all. But looking back in hindsight, you can tell that scar runs deep within Nami as a character, and its these deeper and yet subtle characteristics that make me empathise more with Nami as a character.

One of the best things about One Piece is that you really have no idea what to expect. There are a lot of breadcrumb clues but in such a way that it only really makes sense after you see why. To this day we are still at the edge of the seat about what is happening next in One Piece. Each week is a new surprise. It gets crazier at times and others times will have scenes that make you cry even more than before.

Thanks for sharing your OP reactions on KZfaq, it brought me to your channel and I subbed for your general positivity and emotionally intelligent commentary. :) If you see this, here are a few replies to your commentary that you may enjoy: - Love the scar! I feel like the vibes of the series are infectious and it clearly was for you, glad you enjoyed watching the season! :D - Garp. I feel like a decent amount of people are confused when the season's conflict with Luffy is ended with, "I was testing you." I feel that Garp had his own emotional journey in the eight episodes, helped along by Coby; I think that the live action adaptation laid down enough time with Garp to see the transition, but perhaps it would be more clear to those who have spent more time with the character through the full series. Of course, at first he wanted to prevent Luffy from being a pirate, likely with the initial goal of preventing him from reaching the Grand Line, but as his attempts to stop Luffy continued to fail (when the sail was destroyed on the marine ship, Mihawk deciding not to bring Luffy to Garp) you could see Garp's duality of being furious with Luffy AND proud of his growth. When Coby asked him if leaving Luffy alone was truly the worst outcome, I feel like Garp really began to switch from full-on preventing Luffy's adventure to demonstrating that the adventure he wants to take isn't just fun and games. Coco Village was his last chance to overpower Luffy and show him that if Luffy couldn't stand up to Garp, there are untold others who can and they won't be willing to be as soft on him as his grandpa, even with Garp's tough love. And when Garp sets Luffy down and tells him that he's on his own, it's a reluctant acknowledgement that Garp will never be able to prevent Luffy from this journey and as such, will truly have to treat him like a Marine instead of family. - The "glory days." I can understand your thoughts on Garp possibly pirating, but you also know it's at odds with how Marine-centric his character has been. While there is much of the world that hasn't been introduced yet, we've come to understand Garp's take on the Marines from his talk with Coby about Mihawk: while Garp feels that the Marines are all that stand between justice and anarchy, he's also refused multiple promotion opportunities past Vice Admiral because "he would have to do things THEIR way." The audience has come to see this season that as lawless as pirates CAN be, there are exceptions like Luffy's crew and pirates aren't simply "bad" just as the Marines aren't simply "good." Garp will ultimately align with the Marines as the best option for him to try and make the world better, but if you check the opening sequence again with Gold Roger you can better contextualize their familiarity. Garp has been a Marine for a long time and much like Coby's relationship with Luffy, Garp's experience means he knows there are honorable pirates too. I would better classify Garp and Gold Roger as having a "respectful rivalry" on opposite sides of what the world at large defines as pirates and Marines, and I imagine that this type of relationship could apply to Zeff too. - Usopp. I know you paraphrased his aspiration as "the greatest warrior," I know what you meant but greatest makes it more grandiose than intended. I admit that the live action cut some of the importance of his story so it's not as clear in the adaptation, but despite having an absentee father Usopp has always idolized Yasopp for living a free life. Since Usopp is quick to exaggerate and can't quite stand on his own feet like Luffy, Zoro, or Sanji, his dream to become "a brave warrior of the sea" is to walk in his father's footsteps by setting out for adventure and becoming someone reliable who can hold his own. Thank you for posting the last reactions for this series! Sending you warm wishes for your personal journey and will be eagerly awaiting your future reactions if/when you post more.

In the manga/anime, ussop said he wanted to be a brave warrior of the sea, just like his father, since he was a child. He felt abandoned by him, but kept lying about it, to everyone and to himself. So that way he wouldn't hate his father. That's why he kept screaming "the pirates are coming!" Actually hoping that they really were. Hes always making up excuses for the reason why his father didn't come to see him. He's always saying something like "no, how could he come here? He's the bravest warrior of the see! He needs to keep going. One day I'll be just like him. And then we'll be able to hang out..." So... I think the series tried to make yassop look better here.

The guy with two cigars at the end is Captain Smoker, who in the anime the Straw Hats encounter in Loguetown which is the last stop before the Grand Line. Ideally he should be as buff as Henry Caville. Going forward there are a lot of opponents with devil-fruit powers, so I imagine they will need to pick and choose which ones to use if they are going to stay in budget! Oda has already indicated that he wants Tony Tony Chopper in season 2, how they choose to do that will determine how much of the CGI budget is left over.

So Garp wasn't a pirate, but he was friends/rivals with Gold Roger, similar to how Koby and Luffy were tight. Its why Garp saw his friend off at the execution, even though he had to keep on airs as a Marine and a representative of the World Government. I firmly believe Garp wasn't actually testing Luffy - he's a proud, stubborn man. But between his conversation with Zeff, the final conversation with Luffy, and Luffy reminding him of his former friend Roger, I think he finally relented, and then played it off as "it was all a test" because his pride wouldn't allow him to admit it any other way...
@Itoyokofan
@Itoyokofan 8 ай бұрын
The "it's all a test" quote can be interpreted both ways, either straight away, or as a cover up for him finally letting Luffy go. Because o of this, this line makes the LA Garp character better, not worse imo.
@Sylyatha
@Sylyatha 8 ай бұрын
I think Garp began to realise he really wasn't going to be able to crush Luffy's dream after talking to Coby and Zeff, and after he saw Luffy not backing down in the face of his strength, he began to believe it too. He knows the dangers of the Grand Line, so this final test was to finally convince himself that Luffy would never give up on being a pirate, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

Garp in his glory days once spent a week punching down several mountains and destroying them completely to train his fists to take care of a dangerous pirate with an incredibly hard head. If that gives you an idea how strong Garp is. He's literarly one of the strongest Marines and people in One Piece ever. He trained by destroying mountains lol

The world of One Piece is massive but what makes it impossible to map is the extreme differences in currents and weathers throughout the grand line especially, and the presence of sea beasts. There's also another reason why some islands are hard to find, this will be explored a little in season 2.

Zoro's supposed to be the really good fighter and he's very cool, that's his established identity. And then this _waiter_ comes in and he is also a really good fighter and also very cool, and Zoro's feeling like his role in the crew is being challenged by it. I think they'll come to have a lot of respect for each other and be close friends. But guys, if you aren't aware, often do go from rivals to friends in real life. A lot of the fighting we do with each other is just finding where each other's limits are and earning each other's respect. Masculinity is really well-portrayed in OPLA, and I'm very glad to see it, as a man. Hollywood has not done a good job of that, over the last couple decades. The strong male role models (father figures) and accurate depictions of masculinity in this series are a very welcome change. The cast-off ceremony was great. My favorite part was Nami. Just a couple episodes ago, she said that people have dreams but grow out of them. Luffy has restored her dream which she lost somewhere along the way, either when her foster mom died or during her enslavement to Arlong. Nami may need more time to heal, or not, but at least she's on the path now, as part of Luffy's crew. I want to know more about her when she's not pretending. Garp is really interesting. I have not seen the anime or read the manga, so I don't know what his past is, but he's been a great character and I hope he continues to be a main character going forward as he trains the cadets, and we learn more. I think we will find out more about him and Gold Roger. What we already got from people like Zeff was enough to really get my mind going. This series is wonderful. It's sincere. We don't get a lot of sincere media these days. Everything is so cynical and post-modern, full of grays and moral relativity. I like something that is just straight entertainment, unapologetic in its morality, and full of positivity and bright colors. We need more of this! We also need more of you. Your sincere reactions, and your dedication to note-taking and pre- and post-analysis is also a breath of fresh air. You're not a low-effort reactor, you're the real deal. I subscribed to your channel at the first mention of the notes you were taking, a while back, and I will be sticking around to see what else you do with your channel.

Garp really is Luffy's Grandpa... and he really was trying to get him to give it up by capturing or intimidating him... but overall he was testing his resolve and ultimately he WASN'T willing to put his own Grandson deep in the Marine Prison System and if you watch One Piece long enough you will one day learn why.

Comments for recap: Honestly the scar just fits nicely for the video haha. Good decision i'd say, love seeing the enthusiasm. Nami and Nojiko are adopted sisters! From Oykot kingdom, not sure if its important but it was mentioned. It was mentioned that Garp is a Vice-Admiral which is a position that has only 4 people in the Marines above him(3 admirals and 1 fleet admiral) rankwise and Garp was the one who captured Roger(as well as executioner). So he is not a small fish. Comments for reaction: WILHELM SCREAM ahahaha i try to spot wilhelm screams 9:53 as well its fun. best audioclip to add. It's not explained in Live action as much as in anime/manga, Sanji fights with only kicks because hands are cooks most important tools so cant get them hurt. Buggy deserves the season only F word aimed at him LMAO i loved this version of Buggys story arc. Coby and Helmeppo friendship is the cutest thing coming from Opla, I love Helmeppos redemption arc. Man is slowly changing. The green haired lady at 27:22 is called Makino and she is the barkeep of the bar Shanks' crew visited during Luffys childhood. She is like the bigsister/aunt/mom figure for Luffy. LOVED YOUR REACTION TO SHANKS ahahaha relatable tho. Yasopp is the one on the right at 30:29 in the flashback he had a headband that said Yasopp so we could notice that. Usopps dream for the adventure is to become a brave warrior of the sea and thats the only dream where his antagonist is himself and I love watching his journey to become that man i love him so much Comments for discussion: YES! Youre on point about Garp and his sense of justice, it was mentioned in a previous episode that his own sense of justice being the reason he is not in higher position at the Marines because he would have to do things their way. REALLY nice spot with the 2 cigars, I've seen multiple reactors for this and you're the first one who picked that up. But it is very much a character who always has 2 cigars whatever he does. Damn youre also right about the One Piece world being bigger than our world, i did not know that. Had to google it haha One piece is really good with giving the unexpected, even at where we currently are in anime/manga. Its a great story that is well written. But im glad to be here, I enjoy peoples different experience on the same journey. Its just a blast honestly.

Since the early 2010s, I'd kinda resigned myself to the reality that by that point the story was just too much of a time suck for new fans to get into. When a Live Action was announced, I was pretty anxious they'd screw it up for all the reasons we've heard a million times. It's so surreal to see new fans laugh, cry, and smile just like we did back in the late '90s with this story!

To answer your question, in the original anime/manga you could argue there was an implied romantic element to Ussop and Kaya's relationship but nothing outright like the kiss they had in the Netflix show

I actually have yet to see where people get the idea that the Blue Seas (as I call the One Piece world) is larger than Earth. The most detailed map we've ever gotten is this adaptation's end credits, and it doesn't have a scale on it, and even then is just a lot of the East Blue.

Garp has his own sense of Justice, in a way he is like Luffy, he does not care if youre a pirate or a normal person, if he see injustice he always do the right hing.. Garp is also the "Hero of the Maine" he should have been already a Fleet Admiral (the highest of the Marines) but he chose not too and remain as Vice Admiral for the main reason that he would be a puppet of the higher part of the government.. In a way the Monkey Family has the same values but different positions on the story..

Although others may argue, I think Garp was well represented. Garp knows how dangerous the Grand Line can be and he wanted to test Luffy's resolve. And If Garp wanted to use the Marine resources to do so, he would. And the Marines would not be able to do anything since Garp is the hero of the Marines to the world. And the Usopp Kaya relations is similar in the Manga minus the kiss.

Yeah, a lot of people either don't comprehend the Grand Line (and/or Garp) yet or are already used to it's shenanigans. I actually think it's kinda a happy medium when you're looking at a way to set up the dangers yet to come and the scale of power at the end of a season, especially when you'll have a few years before the next instalment instead of just waiting for the next week's chapter Plus, MAJOR SPOILERS FOR A FEW HUNDRED CHAPTERS FROM NOW... We'll all be thinking back to their fight here when if we make it to Marineford for a repeat

I think Garp was actually done better in the live action than in the anime tbh. The more we learn about Garp, it doesnt make much sense that notable figures wouldn't recognize his full name on the wanted poster and relation to him for so long. This whole plot this season is not only in line with his character, it demonstrates how he feels about family perfectly.
@jayaniceday3602

@@mossicely I agree with you. The anime Garp is fine but the live action fleshes out his character much better. The anime Garp's first meeting with Luffy felt a bit weird considering he is a Vice Admiral and Luffy just declared war on the WG. Garp coming in and just shooting the breeze with Luffy (after his fist of love) was like wut? Now, with the live action intro, we see that Garp has come to terms with Luffy being a pirate so his arrival in Water7 will make more sense. Also, his discussion with Koby in the live action helped show his conflict between his belief that the Marines (despite their faults) are needed to prevent anarchy, vs the Marines going against his morales and personal needs is well shown. His statement to Koby of "how much can you accept the reality and remain a Marine?" was not only reflective of Koby's commitment but also Garp's. It makes you understand why he stood the way he did in Marineford despite all his personal desires telling him to do different. I think the anime Garp has all this but it is not brought out in the story. Thus it leaves people saying "WTF Garp???" during Marineford. JMO.

In anime/manga/game world, usually you rank character with D, C, B, A, S, SS and SSS so far and so on… If Luffy and his main fighting crewmate(Zoro, Sanji, with Luffy they are the “monster trio” in straw hat pirates, they’re always fighting the most tough enemies of SHP-and of course, there are also a “weakling trio” in SHP, but no spoilers) are at Rank D right now, Mihawk and Shanks are around SS, and Garp, maybe SSS or higher.

Garp actually is pretty close to a pirate but he's also a Marine. What I mean about that is Garp cares A LOT about his Freedom. He personally has a deep sense of justice for good and has become a Navy War hero for chasing down many dangerous pirates and also capturing the KING of the Pirate Gold Roger. Garp is a bit eccentric and later in the story you get more insight into his complicated feelings about Luffy, Roger and Pirates and Marines in general. Let's just say that Garp very much is one that believe in order and marines help maintain that order but he DEFINITELY DOES NOT agree with a lot of the navy's policies and methods.

As a french, Sanji used french word of food for his techniques. Believe me, Garp doesn't show his real power (without devil fruit). And it's just a Vice Amiral not an Amiral or more a Fleet Amiral. He's right to test Luffy because Grand Line is a real real another level of Danger. The name of the mother of Nami was "Belle Mere" mean in french "Step Mom". Yassop is the guy with locks and blue shirt. Listen well what Mihawk said at the beginning of the meeting with Shanks, he put Shanks in a rank above his own so...is not a Warlord. (You gonna learn more next season or if you watch the Anime).

It's surreal seeing people who've never even heard of the original given this show a watch and enjoying it (I had a real stupid smile when my 65 yo mom saw Luffy stretch his arms, "Oh! He has super powers?!") For every one or two complaints I have with an episode, there's eight or nine things I absolutely love. It's not perfect, but it's clearly a labor of love that... Actually did a very good job bringing the comic to life and found a solid balance between being faithful to the source and being it's own thing. And your Luffy scar looks awesome!
