Curiosity is one of the most endearing things that we have as children - the never ending barrage of “why?”.
It’s also one of the things, along with playfulness and adaptability, that can get kicked out of us as we get older.
Stephen Mallinder is one of the most prolific, influential and pioneering DIY sound, art and writing radicals, from opening up new sound terrains with Cabaret Voltaire to making soundtracks, experimental filmography, forming DIY record labels, radio shows, festivals, solo stuff, remixes, collaborations such as the brilliant Wrangler, Ku-Ling Bros, getting himself a PhD, writing academic journals and now lecturing in Digital Music and Sound Arts at the Uni of Brighton.
In a nutshell, he has constantly explored those unknown spaces where intense curiosity is not only possible but essential for constant development.

I wonder if its possible to ask Mallinder about some of Cabaret Voltaire's song lyrics, particularly "Badge of Evil" and what is the significance of the words (or are they) "spelled sell" in the lyrics?

If Stephen Mallinder is able to get this - I personally think I got it figured out. That song is basically about a man in a position of power, possibly also mentally unbalanced, who pretends to be good but actually beneath the surface has sinister and dark and selfish intentions ala corrupt politician. And it's also possible that in a sense "spelled sell" has a double meaning here beyond the word being spelled S.E.L.L. He is placing people under his spell, in a way under influence, and sells his image smartly but deceptively. And this is what the situation spells out as well. Many of the song's lyrics seem indecipherable. Perhaps intentionally so, maybe wanting audience to figure it out for themselves. And some versions of "The Crackdown" (1983) album wrongly listed and confused that track with "Moscow". Oh well.

And is the song "Diskono" in a way an invented slang for "No disco"? And is it basically about rising ("Rising - through the surface") above say the conventions of disco music genre and to create something fresh and new, i.e. industrial experimental electronic dance music in the Cabaret Voltaire mold and style? And what is the significance of words in the lyrics like "Rising - through the surface? Action? My friend sold - a service? (Right lyrics). To the light. Break through the circle. Break through the framework." Etc. And the blurry video that features Mallinder in the background, wedding shop motif, WW2 parades, a woman in the background etc.
