Seat Leon is a compact hatchback, which is in production since 1998. Leon means “lion” in Spanish. It is also the name of one of the Spanish provinces, and old kingdom, which became one of the foundations of medieval Spain. “Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo” or SEAT was set up in 1950. Just a few years later it went into cooperation with Fiat. This cooperation lasted almost 30 years. But when the money for investments run out, in stepped Volkswagen. Thanks to the new owner SEAT has access to common parts and new tech. And that’s good. But there are also some disadvantages.
I talked about those disadvantages in length in my 2014 3rd generation Seat Leon review. After a head-turning 2nd gen car, the 3rd generation was bland to say the least in terms of looks, functionality, and even driving. I couldn’t understand why Volkswagen bothers keeping Seat alive, and offers the Leon between the Octavia and the Golf. But the new Leon is bringing back the Auto Emocion.

The rear seat space is 5 cm longer than in the Golf, its not by far the same, and thats the big advantage of the new Leon compared to the new Golf. The rear bench also sits better 3 people than the Golf. Its all because the mqb platform for the new Leon wheelbase is lengthened by almost 6 cm compared to the Golf one. That simple, thats why its also quite longer than the Golf and thats why it drives so good on motorways and bends although its offered only with a torsion beam rear suspension compared to the multilink on the Golf (for the same 1.5 lt engine and also for the larger ones).

Nice review! I pride my self in checking out all your reviews, but then we just went and signed up for a Leon FR e150 TSI, without looking at your review first! So a good thing you liked it.. :) I first looked at Autogefühl and they really liked the DCC suspension. Then when I checked out your review, you were not impressed. Good thing we didn't check that box. I feel thou, the backseat is a bit roomier than in the Golf. Keep up the good work 👍

Hi Marek, great review and I'm off to the dealer's tomorrow to order an FR model as a result. Been torn between the Golf 8 and the Leon but having driven both now it was difficult to decide, but your review convinced me to trust my gut instinct. Simply, the Leon appeals on an emotional level. It has faults I'm sure but I want something cheap, fun and practical that has a touch of the wow factor to it and the Leon just wins out against the Golf.

We have the 2021 Leon FR e-Hybrid. We love everything about it except the infotainment system and the lack of physical buttons. These are things we can live with because the car is great!

The last generation Leon is definitely not boring! I’m not sure Spanish viewers will appreciate your comments early in the review, either! Also, New Ibiza is a good car and quite different to the last model, too. New Leon is a great car I agree, perhaps the best of the 4 VAG models in the segment. Rear seat space should be better than Golf as it sits on a longer wheelbase. You criticise the rear seat belts getting in the way when the seat is folded; you seem to have missed the rear seat belt clips which prevent that from happening.

Yes, unlike in the Golf, which has a differently moulded plastic to eliminate the need for the clip in the first place.

The clip is so stupid, you put the seat belt on the clip and when your granny is at the backsit and grabs the seatbelt without realising there is the retarded clip and pulls the belt it breaks... yes very smart ...

@@MarekDrives We'll get the 1.5 but I read somewhere that it won't be the eTSI because of our lower fuel quality. Our national government is not keen on electric cars or emission standards. No ID3 anytime soon. Even though the hybrid Toyotas sell like hot cakes - 6+ month wait on the RAV 4 hybrid.

I follow quite a few car review channels, but you Marek... Your Chanel is my favourite. I follow it couple of years now. Only bugs me that when new video comes out on the suggestions, it is the polish one... I am sure if you do some marketing of your channel and maybe you copy the strategy of Carwow (coalition with Joe Achilles and Yannimize) your channel will skyrocket. Keep making entertaining reviews as you know.

congratulations great review. could you tell me how the stock sound system feels (not the beats sound)? How many speakers does it have, where are they positioned and the specific or total watts rms? Some say 6 speakers who 7 and who 8 and who 9 incredible not even seat from certain answers sometimes says 6 sometimes 7 speakers !!!! Tell us if it has 6 speakers: 2 rear woofers with the tweeters above near the opening absolutely empty and fake, 2 forward woofers plus 2 tweeters. Or 7 speakers: as before and an additional central speaker hidden in the dashboard? Or 8 with real tweeters behind but without hidden central speaker in front? Or 9 with everything, 5 at the front and 4 at the back? It is absurd not to find this information certain and to find it all but there is only one truth and what is it?

To be honest, I noticed the prices go up in VAG group with these new models. Fist I saw the Octavia have a significant bump in prices, now this Leon is more than I’d expect.... sad, looks like I’ll be keeping my 3 year old car for much longer than anticipated...

I'd say they are comparable. The Golf uses the space a bit better. The whole cabin is a big bubble, whereas in the Leon some interior space is lost because of the more sloping A and C pillars.

Yet another great review! And even your sponsored content doesn't bother me; it does on pretty much every other channel. Maybe because it's relevant to your channel, or maybe because you do it so well. However, I don't understand how you like the design on this new generation, but not the previous. The new one looks like a facelift or the last generation - and not a good one - just looks stretched, like when you stretch your gummy bears. But looks are subjective I suppose ;)

Even it it looks like a facelift, it looks like a good facelift. Alone the Mk3 Leon looked OKish, but as a whole package stuck between the Octavia and the Golf it was meh.

@@MarekDrives I really like your reviews Marek, but i've never shared your opinion on Leon MK3. I drove it a lot ( FR, 1.8TSI, multi-link, DCC ) and it was always a pleasant ride with little bit of sporty flavour considering its VW. Its suspension in comparison to Octavia MK3 is simply better and i personally really like the design unlike its boring ( to me ) siblings - it has a presence and it used to caught attention from people. Sure, the suspension for instance was not that good as Focus or Mazda 3, but package overall was really good and it showed in sales. Looking forward to drive new VW models including this new Leon, but it seems that at least Leon and Octavia have both improved. I think SEAT has a bright future ahead, if one wants VW with little bit more attunement toward younger drivers, sporties setup and in my opinion more emotional design than Golf or Octavia, it appears to be a good choice. BTW heard that Leon's new infotainment is significantly better than Octavia and perhaps even than Golf's one - don't have personal experience yet. Keep up the good work

Press cars usually come with automatic climate control, so the only thing I sometimes change is the temperature. There's a touch button/slider for that. Easy enough. I can't imagine it with manual AC though.

Am i the only one that is a little bit annoyed, that virtually all car tests these days appear to involve only top spec models. I wish companies would provide mid spec test cars like the majority of potential buyers.

It's often not our choice. Carmakers buy top trim cars for the press fleet, because they want to show off all the new options. TBH if you have to choose between a base spec Golf, Leon or Octavia, buy whichever one is cheapest to buy and run.

like you Marek I hate the digital "dials" the car looks like the designers took the OPEL Astra K and upgraded the later's design but they ended up with a front that resembles the Hyundai I20/i30 well this Leon should be with manual gearbox to be more enjoyable to drive again thanks for the good reviews

Hi Marek, now the Alhambra has stopped being made and if I want to stay with the brand I will have to go fo the Tarraco but against the beautifully proportioned Leon it looks incredibly bland. My number one requirement is boot space and not even the Leon estate would be good for my needs. Great review as always. Stay safe and well. Greetings from Cumbria in the UK.

@@EssLoco overall I'm positive. The few things I don't like is lane assist and how long it takes to deactivate on the latest firmware and the way it frantically tried to recharge the battery if it reaches 1%. You cannot disable that. But a workaround for me is 2 lock the minimum battery to 30% on long trips then it behaves normally and fuel consumption doesn't tank.

@@EssLoco if you figure out how to launch it the best then I'm 95% sure that it's faster from 0-60(0-100km/h) than advertised. But it doesn't seem as straight forward as with a stick. It's very easy to wheel spin due to torque so you have to manage the power a bit. But when you do it right it's a very fast car for it's price bracket. I haven't been to the autobahn yet but I'm looking forward to it in the spring to see what this beauty can do. Overall power seems plenty it just takes a little knowhow to get the most out of the car. Then again I'm new to automatics as I've always been driving stick soo could just be me that is slow in the uptake :P

If anything annoys me in automatic cars I've driven it's when they don't know when to shift. How does this car handle that? If I hit the gas going 120kph on a highway, will I get instant power or instant regret? Thanks :)

P.s. you're the only reviewer on KZfaq addressing the DCC problems in VW group cars...my Leon will go back to the dealer, since Seat says the very poor acoustic comfort of DCC is normal in all cars with DCC. Drove Leon without DCC and its a much better car without...more precise, much quiter on bad roads. Can't get my head around that VW group offers such miserable performance with its DCC.

Unfortunately they are right. It's not a bug, it's a feature :/ Apparently it's designed to deliver various suspension characteristics, but once you reach a certain roughness of the road or hit a big enough bump, it is natural for DCC to make such knocking noises. Which wouldn't be a problem if you encounter such bumps once a week, but is much worse, when your entire commute is like this. I tend to discourage people from getting DCC (unless it's part of some equipment pack, which includes other stuff they need). I think they improved somewhat over the years, but not perfect yet.

@@MarekDrivesENG unfortunately I hit bad roads immediately I drove out of our parking lot. Unacceptable for me, really disappointed that they offer such a crap. Especially considering that engineers care about, closing sound of doors, smell of the cars etc. but can't deliver a acceptable DCC performance.

I drove the 1st generation (my dad´s former car) and the 2nd generation (a friends current car) and I like both. I was very close to buy the 2nd generation face lift with the 1.2 TSI engine because it was really awesome but I was wondering if the small turbo engine will hold up. Time showed - it did not always. 3rd generation looked to me very similar to an audi A3 somehow. It was not so much "different" to the other cars of the VAG Company - I fully agree. After your Review, I consider the new Leon again but I am not a fan of the front design - what´s sad to me is that the new corolla Front looks better. We are talking seat vs. toyota, i think seat should have made a more aggressive looking front. Maybe there will be a facelift...

@@majin0buu @majin0buu Ok, but these days this depends on personal taste. Materials and finish are not worse compared to seat anymore. What's actually worse is the infotainment from Toyota and there is no 12V socket anymore in the back of the corolla... in which world do they live? The Auris had 12V sockets everywhere! What's better in the Corolla (And the Auris) in my opinion are the front seats.

Is it the rear suspension still rubbish? Shame that leon and octavia doesn't come on multilink with stronger engines (=/>150hp), like an audi A3 and golf! And big mistake, leon 4 has a same amount of legroom as octavia 4, it's far better then golf at rear seat!

Another well educated smart head,Ford Focus dont have it with 125ps abd still better than anything what audi,bmw and merc have in that c segment and how about megane rs and 308gti but present such bland car like octavia like something speciall and buying car on meters is something with small soul from balkans..Cini se da si jos jedan hadezeovski coban kojo je sa glinenog polja sjeo u auto.

When visiting Barcelona in 2008 we witness a theft after 5 minutes at the main station. Two days later somebody tried robbing us and 1 day after that we saw a guy chasing a thief that stole his bag. Not a place to go for vacation of you want to relax.

Happens the same in every european metropolis with lots of tourists. Paris, Milan, Florence, Barcelona, etc... The thefts are not native from those countries.

@@jordirex7711 Exactly. I'm From Spain, and it's just like everywhere else. Main metropolis with thousands of tourists, population and whatnot? Expect those kinds of things. Move to some quiet town, smaller city, and you won't have to worry.

Bur if a 1.5 fully equiped is 21k, its ok. I meam black headliner and sunroon is like 400 uero, adaptive susepsion and 18inch wheels, prices are not much different

Good and perinent critics Marek ! But have you noticed that the water cooling temperature gauge had disapeared (maybe it's lost somewhere in sub menus) !? this gauge is very useful specialy in hotter contries ! Note that the volume touch paddle and the climate touch paddles are not illuminated by night ! strange, no ? . Analysing other items means clearly that VAG is saving costs.

Now that you mentioned it, indeed they seem to be dark, but I supposed you can then use the on-screen menu. Not a good idea in any configuration, but give them time, and they will come to their senses, just like PSA did in the new C4. As far as temperature gauge is concerned, in many cars this has been replaced with warning lights. I recall observing the temperature gauge once in my Peugeot 306 some 10 or 15 years ago, when I was driving in the mountains on a hot summer day. Since then I own an MX5, which also has temperature and even oil pressure gauge. I never look at them. A warning light would be enough.

I am really enjoying your reviews and I was waiting for this one for long time beacause I am getting NEW Leon next month. But I am litle disappointed in this review beacuse real review is startin from 4 something minutes from the start of the vidio. And with only 8 minutes of "real" review and afcourse with two KZfaq ads(praises for that) I think that you could go a little bit more in-depth with review. Nevertheless great review 👍

Well I did get a fealing that you just made a emphasis on differences between Golf and Leon(I understand that Golf is market milestone but Leon has a lot to offer without constant downgrading or upgrading his features with Golf). I would liked that you take a litle more time for Infotainment system(best from VW in my opinion) and a maybe night drive(LED lights should be 60% brighter then the rest of the group) and looks of interior at night(Gimmicks I know but it is beautiful interior at night drive)

φίλε και εγώ ακριβώς αυτό το δίλημμα έχω. Δεν ξέρω ποιο από τα 2 να διαλέξω. Βέβαια περιμένω να φέρουν το Ν line στην Αθήνα για να κάνω το test drive , αλλά αυτά τα φώτα πίσω του leon και το ambiet light μεσα είναι το κάτι άλλο.

Leon excellence SW 150PS M/T. Και αν έχει ml πίσω το i30 δεν θα έχει ποτέ την κύλιση, τους χώρους και τα αποτελέσματα EuroNCAP του Leon. Αυτό βέβαια για όσους δεν "φοβούνται" τον VAG...

Leon fr , καλύτερο από πολλές απόψεις αλλά ακριβότερο... τo i30 ενώ είναι τέλειο έχει τον χαρακτήρα που ο οικογενειαρχης θέλει ένα αμάξι σχετικά γρηγορο να πηγαίνει το παιδί του στο φροντιστήριο και το καλοκαίρι παιδιά σκυλιά στο αμάξι για την παραλία ... το leon πιο σπορτιφ αμάξι και γρηγοροτερο ενω έχει δηλωμένη ιπποδύναμη 150 hp , στην πραγματικού αποδίδει κάπου στους 168 ίππους πραγματικά.... με κινητήρα διαμάντι που μπορεί να φτάσει τους 190 ίππους μόνο με πρόγραμμα και τίποτα αλλο παραπάνω με ένα 500ρικο σε γνωστό οίκο tunning.

And i'm not just basing this on your videos. I have done a thorough comparison myself. This is definetly not ' more or less the same'. The Leon wins this one with ease. Not hating :) Just want to make sure that people deciding between the Golf and the Leon (who value space on the rear) are getting the right information. Rest of review is good though.

I've been to see the Golf and the Leon, the Leon feels way more spacious. I'm 6ft3, when I sat in the driver's seat of the Leon I could comfortably sit behind my own seating position in the rear. I couldn't manage the same in the Golf, I wasn't even sure if a small adult could fit behind me if my seat was pushed all the way back.

I never liked the MK2 Leon, the MK3 3 looks a lot better much more like my MK1 which I think still looks alright for its age. This new MK4 looks very much like a Mazda 3.

Have the Sportstourer, the DCC really is bad...comfort is ok, but the rumble especially from the front is horrible...so is the whole user interface in everyday use. No you not get used to it...its dangerous to use on road...voice control doesn't help for most actions and doesn't work great. Really can't understand that while the quality of the cars body is great, the finishing (not the materials) is good, they took great effort in the interior lighting, Seat/VW still churns out cars that are worse in some respects than many cars from a class below...e.g. chassis noise. Also mine came with Bridgestone T005...get rid of them, they increase road noise in the cabin by a large margin.

Interestingly, the Leon is built in a region of Spain known as Catalonia that, as everybody knows, no longer wants to be part of Spain. And it is far from an exception, I believe the country is in decomposition. Maybe because of thieves, a lot of thieves. Even the previous king, known as Juan Carlos I, has just fled the country because of tax evasion. So what's left, a car without physical controls that for me is a danger, even the lights have touch controls, a harsh ride and poor sound isolation. Are you sure is the car you want to be in?

Well, actually the region of spain with more thieves is precisely Catalonia. The whole catalan government have been corrupt since they started ruling the region (40 years ago). And once all of this corruption cases have been uncovered by the spanish court, they came up with this nationalist, independence thing. Anyway, the new Seat leon is a pretty decent car and good value for money.
