Steve catches Funny Car Fever as he examines this second year example of Chevy’s popular mid-size model. But is this one ready for the altered wheelbase treatment? Or is it just all-turd?

My first car was a '65 Chevy II with the 194 c.i. six that Steve mentioned, hooked up to a 3-on-the-tree with a non-synchronized 1st gear. A hand-me-down from my mom who told me that it had to be at a stop before shifting into 1st. Well, apparently she didn't remember growing up in the 1930's and 40's, when most cars didn't have a synchronized transmission at all. I taught myself how to double clutch on that car, taking out onto our neighborhood streets well before I had my license. I amazed a lot of people with that "impossible trick", including one friend from my local Corvair club who lent me his 3-speed '64 Monza coupe for a club weekend. He gave me a quick "check flight" in his neighborhood before cutting me loose in it, and didn't even realize at first that I shifted back into 1st on the roll the first 2 or 3 times I did it! I had to teach him how to do it... and he was a 30-year master mechanic! Anyhow, I digress. I consider the '65 Chevelle to be much better looking than its '64 predecessor with its flat front end. That's something that I've noticed about the first 3 "sets" of Chevelle styling: it always improved the second year. I like the '65 over the '64, the '67 over the '66, and the '69 over the '68. Then Chevy turned that all backwards, because the three years after that, 1970, '71, and '72, in my opinion the '70 is by far the most aggressive looking, the '71 is OK, but the revised '72 grille and marker lamps just don't "flow"..To me, it's like they were designed by two different designers who couldn't agree whether they should be in three horizontal segments (the grille), or just one big open piece (the lights). No harmony. OK, I gurss I've bored y'all long enough here with my disjointed ramblings. If you've read it all this far, thank you and congratulations for your sticking with it. If you HAVEN'T read it all the way to this point, you probably aren't reading the end of this full-length novel anyhow, so it doesn't really matter anyhow. Good night, and Godspeed

I remember back in the 70’s a lot of these 64-65 Chevelles were turned into dirt track racers when the supply of 55-57 Chevys started to dry up. The Chevelle had the same wheelbase as the earlier models so the bodies easily swapped over onto the earlier chassis.
@RobertSmith-le8wp11 ай бұрын
When I was racing they were using late 70’s Camaros, and now they use G bodys. In all the cars I’ve driven they use that 2 speed manual (with 2 sticks) where you actually push the clutch in to get going and then shift into high. I can’t recall what it’s called but they’re dead reliable

Chevy was really feeling their oats when cars like this were made. They had some great styles in the 60's with such simple clean lines that inspired and looked great just sitting still. Looked even better on the road. Back in the early 90's I worked at a small very old auto repair garage nestled in a residential neighborhood. You'd pass it if you didnt look quick as it was set back from the road. Next door was a house an old lady lived in and she drove a fire engine red 65 hard top with a 6 and Powerglide. Had a red interior and dog dish hubcaps. Ir was resprayed maybe 10 years earlier and still looked great. I always asked her if she wanted to sell it but that was a lost cause as she bought it new. Some years later she died and the son rented the house out but the Malibu sat and collected dust in the garage for many years. A friend ended up buying the garage and when I would visit I would walk to the back of his property and peek in the garage next door to see if the car was still there. Fast forward to 5 years ago I drove past and saw the garage door open but empty. I hope the son still has it somewhere.

Correct, you have to be careful with cowl tags. Depending on the year, they do NOT always tell you if it's a V8 or not. The VIN does, and that's what should be used. Always research and decode them on a case-by-case basis, year by year. We got the tag, we can brag: 02C for the third week of February 1965 production, 65 for 1965 model year, 13637 for Chevrolet (1) Malibu (36) two door sport coupe (37), FRA for Framingham, MA assembly, 772 for Red Ramada cloth and imitation leather bench seat interior trim, N-N for Madeira Maroon lower and upper exterior paint, accessory group 2 code of M for two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission (RPO code M35), accessory group 3 code C for instrument panel pad (RPO code B70), and the significance of the "D" and "L" on the tags of Framingham built vehicles is unknown. The Framingham plant operated from 1947 to 1989 and the closing of it was a political duel between local politician Anthony Colonna and then governor of MA Michael Dukakis. Correct, always refer to VIN to determine if the vehicle was a six or eight cylinder. We got the VIN, we win: 1 for Chevrolet, 35 for Malibu six cylinder, 37 for two door sport coupe, 5 for 1965 model year, G for Framingham, MA assembly and the rest is the production sequence. Fisher Body plants were often "through the wall" on the other side of the assembly side and Fisher was a separate division from GMAD (General Motors Assembly Division) and trim tags only are concerned with what concerned the Fisher Body plant and their work. The GMAD side handled the rest. In some cases they were located at another facility (e.g., Euclid, OH Fisher bodies would make their way to other GMAD plants, such as in the case of the Toronado, Riviera and Eldorado, among other models).
@mikem369511 ай бұрын
I wonder if that car ever made it out if MA. It's a shame that plant closed along with so many other huge companies that started and died in the state, Dennison, Digital, Data General, Wang Labs to name a few. I never new the details of GM leaving but was under the impression it was because the town wouldn't allow GM to expand. Never knew the Massinine politics behind it.
@googleusergp11 ай бұрын
@@mikem3695 That's correct. GM wanted to expand and open up new facilities in the area and Anthony Colonna who was a local politician wanted to use the land for other things. Mr. Dukakis got behind things and tried to muscle in. Mr. Colonna fought back and GM responded by closing the plant citing, "Economic issues" and then added, "Sometimes the labor climate has something to do with it....." Basically, they gave the town a kick in the groin.

VIN Breakdown: 1= Chevrolet 3537= Chevelle Malibu Sport Coupe 6 cylinder engine 5= 1965 G= Framingham, MA Assembly Plant 121716= Sequential Production Number (Started at 100001) Steve is spot on ref the trim tag vs the VIN tag differences, also the 2M code on the trim tag would confirm a Powerglide transmission. Very interesting observation here- The stainless steel VIN tag has one rosette rivet and one round rivet. GM used round rivets on all early built 1965 vehicles up to January 1965. Rosette rivets started in January of 1965. The build date on this cowl tag (02C) is February 3rd week, so it makes sense that a random round rivet was still hanging around in the rivet bin on the assembly line. Great stuff as always Mags!

The Powerglide is also super popular in dirt track racing, where you never need to shift any gears. Since they are smaller and lighter than a TH350 they are a weight savings measure for the most part. And they are super easy to rebuild.

Hi Steve, good car, good video! I used to work at a transmission shop and your information is correct, it a GM/Chevrolet aluminum case Powerglide automatic transmission. As you mentioned, popular for drag racing, but not so much with street rods and/ or street machines. Second gear is 1:00 to 1 "high gear" but in the mean time first gear (low gear) is that of a three speed automatic, leaving you with NO second gear at all. With a two speed automatic, when you start from a traffic light or stop sigh, an make a right turn, the transmission is in "high gear" as soon as you steer the car straight ahead, not good for street performance. Please reply. Dave...

Don't think of the Powerglide as not having a passing gear - think of it as a trans with a great gear for a 40-roll speed competition. Top Gear is still 1:1, so you don't rev any higher driving on the highway, but the Powerglide Low range nearly splits the difference between 1st and 2nd on a 3-Speed Turbohydramatic.

I have rebuilt the big brother 292 Chev 6 in a Bedford truck. So much SBC stuff interchanges. Bearings, lifters, 3 7/8 bore = 283 307 rings. Rockers and more. Powerslides have no place anywhere. Fast and faster and useless. Though strong. Drag racers wank themselves over their powerslides and spend zillions on them. Yet a 3 speed TH box will always make them faster
@DanEBoyd11 ай бұрын
I think 292 rrockers have a different ratio than the small block Chevy. SBCs are 1.5:1, but I believe that 292s used 1.7:1 rockers, because 292 rockers are a good bolt on upgrade for a Ford 300 - which I believe uses a 1.6:1 rocker.

Obviously, if something is wrong he need not go into any details at all, but just being left to wonder is another annoying stress that nobody needs. When you choose to become a public celebrity of sorts, there is also the responsibility (perhaps burden) of the virtual relationship with your viewer/subscribers. That is one of the costs of celebrity. It is disrespectful to be suddenly goasted and left to wonder what has happened.

Hi Steve Reckon you're on vacation. Altered wheelbase cars have the theory planted way back in the 19th century I know you like steam locomotives and that is basically where the idea came from. Early single driving wheel locomotives like the British Stirling had tremendous slip on the rails. The Crampton locomotive attempted to address this by placing the single driving axle way back to redistribute the tractive effort. The French railways loved them. Bit of useless information there from me All the best Nick Jervis UK 🇬🇧
