My suburban city has an initiative for planting 'Shade Trees'. I've owned this house for 20 years and am perfectly happy without a tree lawn tree. Any tree lawn without a tree was sentenced to the city's initiative. One day the tree lawn tree showed. I didn't recognize the type of tree so I reached out to my council person, he referred me to another individual who is on the 'Shade Tree' committee. When I asked "What type of tree is the one that was planted on my tree lawn", she had to get back to me. Apparently, no actual registry existed for a quick reference. One week later, I received her email that proudly announced the tree as being a White Swamp Elm which in most communities is considered a nuisance type tree due to its invasive root system that seeks out water, and cracks concrete, its height and width (over 75 feet) . Need I mention that the old underground pipes have burst, curb side in front of my home, at least 3 times. It took me 2 minutes to find and read information regarding the selected tree. Clearly, no real arborist was involved in this "Shade Tree Initiative".

I live in a racially mixed neighborhood; Hispanic, Asian, Black, White (about 25%). The city ATTEMPTS to plant trees in the local park (located 6 city blocks apart) or on the boulevard. Also trees are given free of charge to home owners for their yards. After living in this neighborhood for 35 years the only times I have seen vandalism of trees has been by black "kids", many times the parent (s) is present. Since the city (park department) has planted the tree, the tree has become a "legitimate" target to prove that you are against the city and population.

My advise to anyone who actually lands one of these-- er--- jobs is to put as much of that as possible into the savings. It won't last forever and no, I don't fault anyone for taking it it. I'd take it and I'd save/invest most of my pay and hold on to it for as long as the gravy train lasts. Oh, right, forget about the left's discrimination practices.

You appear to be conflating management with labor rates. A municipal forestry manager is typically a credentialed forestry major with a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and relevant management experience and training. $60/hr. is quite typical for such a position in a high cost-of-living city like Seattle, although they would normally receive a salary rather than an hourly wage. The requirements for socially equitable distribution of trees is not in the least surprising for a city with consciousness of the typical bias toward higher infrastructure expenditures on wealthy neighborhoods versus those with low incomes. In my neighborhood the streets are repaved when they are still in excellent condition, while poorer neighborhoods in objectively greater need of street repairs are neglected, for example. And I live in a liberal city.

So there will be a director making 120 k a year to hire and direct a crew that will cost twice that with the overall cost at a quarter million a year to plant trees, or more when you add the trucks, tools and trees. One million a year.

As many trees as charging stations about 4 or 5 trees, the Tree Equity Manager must make sure as well they are progressive growing trees and the trees are not white only trees of color.

From my observation the trees usually die from neglect once they are planted...difference between government and homeowner is govt doesn't care about results, only about getting paid.

@ News for Reasonable People - I remember about a year ago, you had a podcast about a homeless man who built a treehouse. Maybe these trees can be used for that purpose. It would elevate the homeless camps so they would be less visible. Just don't walk under them. 🤪

As long as Seattle has a Tree Equity Manager I am never going to vote yes on any new tax, tax increase, or levy. (Although, even if they did axe the Tree Equity Manager, I probably still wouldn't vote yes for those things.)

If they hired an arborist that has a master's degree and they have to manage the budget, research areas for passive cooling etc... I can see that being $120k a year. Fact is most POCs (other than native Indians) don't give a darn about nature or the environment.

They probably don’t work them many hours or many days a week. But anyway, a job is a job. They are doing something for money. The city was probably going to renovate the area with trees anyway. And something needs to be done to increase spending on the part of working people. I would most like if Social Security gets a livable raise, and gets checked if it needs one every year. So our seniors can help spend money into our stagnating economy and prop up small business that have been shuttering. Keep them from shuttering. Workers need to make an amount that sits above cost of living, permanently. No more wage stagnating below cost & livability. No more sleeping in your car because you lost your apartment because of low wages. We need Unemployment Insurance to cover all unemployed as well, not just the fired ones, at local cost of living to keep their housing. & Wages must be above the subsistence of cost of living.

Remember that your congressional reps in DC got this $12M grant attached to a bill as pork. "$12 million dollar federal grant for new development aesthetics equity czar. Starting salary $125,000 of taxpayer money, plus a taxpayer-funded pension plan, retirement savings plan, medical plan, and taxpayer subsidized supplemental Medicare plans after retirement. If you show bias for art deco over chalets, this job is not for you." All the while, Seattle is dying. But we really, really need a "tree equity manager!". November is coming. If you've never voted, vote. If your rational for candidate selection has never been your financial well being, you might want to re-assess your priorities. Just sayin'.

Why don't they just hire 3 or 4 forest rangers and develop a youth conservation core to hire Junior high and high school students to plant trees at minimum wage, It would cost a fraction of what It would cost For 1 Environmental tree manager cost and it would give kids do during the Something to do during the summer and teach them responsibility with money, Youth Conservation Corps.

The Building Partnerships if taken as written would mean that you have to introduce partnerships with Black Individuals or Native (Indigenous just is another way to say Native) and people of colour. This person has to be low income, and also has to be an immigrant and a refugee and also has to be none English speaking. Do a venn diagram and it will show that NO ONE Qualifies to be taken into partnership. You can be an immigrant, or a refuge but not both, therefore there are no partnerships allowed by definition.

$60 an hour in seattle is not that good bud. They are pandering, but it is true to an extent. Which is exactly the real problem. They spend money to feign empathy, they aren't hard working people by nature and they don't even expect results, but their hearts are so heavy.
