There's actually nothing wrong with calling a pass play in that situation, just not that one. The pass they called was totally wrong, super risky, and very poorly executed. Running that play from shotgun clearly telegraphed a pass play. If I called the play, I'd call a play action to the right to Marshawn Lynch because NE is going to be looking for them to run, and you run it with Wilson under the center. You sell the shit out of the play action and have the tight end on the left delay one second (again, apparently blocking to sell the run), and then break off for the rear end zone pylon. If the play works, you're gold. If the play ain't there to be had, Wilson just throws the ball out of the end zone. That stops the clock, which is strategically why you call that particular play, plus it is way safer than the stupid slant play that was called. You would then have 2 more downs and a timeout to give the ball to Lynch from the one yard line.

Was it though? I've seen dozens of TDs on rub routes in the Endzone, maybe more. And that's the only time I've EVER seen that play intercepted. To me they made it about the play call not the play and it was the best play I've EVER seen. Also no one mentions the fact that the Patriots broke the huddle with four 2-Gapping behemoths in Vince Wilfork#75/6ft2/325 Lb, Alan Branch #97/6ft6/350LB, Sealver Siliga #96/6ft2/344LB, Christ Jones #94/6ft2/302LBs/, flanked by two very strong EDGE setters in Chandler Jones #95/6ft5/266LBs and Rob Ninkovich #50/6ft3/260, with two bruising throwback LB, Jamie Collins #91/6ft4/250Lbs and Dont'a Hightower #54/6ft3/265LBs, with three CB to match the Seahawks three receiver set (Revis, Browner, and Bulter). The seahawks lined up in a 3x1 nub set, with the TE to the far (boundary) side, with an inside receiver in the near slot, tight to the formation, and a 2 wr stack out wide of him almost to the numbers. The near slot motions over to a flanker position out wide to the boundary, and Darrelle Revis follows him. This is the key indicator - to Russell Wilson that the Patriots are in man-to-man coverage, so he should go ahead with the play as-called, since it is a man-beater by design, but it also clues Belichick to not call a timeout since Butler and Browner now know to expect one of the Seahawks staple man-beater, rub-route plays that they had actually repped against in practice leading up to the SB! Another key for Wilson is that the Patriots match their 6 Man-Line with essentially 8 players, Chandler Jones on the far EDGE, with Collins - who has the TE in m2m coverage - in the C-Gap between the TE & Tackle, and then Wilfork, Siliga, Branch, and Chris Jones across the line in the A & B gaps, and Ninkovich on the Near side EDGE. This leaves the 265 MLB Dont'a Hightower as the unlocked player behind the LOS, to fill any creases that may open up and meet Marshawn Lynch in the hole, in the even that Seattle chooses to run. However, had Seattle Called for a shotgun, sorry, pistol run play in the huddle, you would have likely heard "Kill! Kill! Kill!" aka "Omaha! Omaha!' (S.O. Peyton) as he checked out of the Run play and in to the contingency pass play, because you could not possibly have a less favorable "box count" to run against.

No just no. It's a stupid choice. U can breakdown nd analyze all u want that's what's wrong with people. This IS FOOTBALL. It's not complicated u have 2 timeouts on second down with a mf yall call BEAST MODE standing there nd u throw the ball. Dumb as hell U run that bitch 3 times in a row.

Why do so many people not understand that Wilson called an audible? Carroll did not call that play. Once again, Russ is to blame.

Carroll thought he was still coaching the New York Jets when he made that call.

Coaches get paid millions a year. Carrol should have been forced to give back every dime after that call. He should have to live in absolute poverty for the rest of his life.

I don't mind a pass play there but it should have been some kind of rollout to give Wilson time to assess the situation with multiple options of passing, running it in or throwing it away. They play they ran was a kinda of timing play with a two step drop and quick release. Russell was literally releasing the ball while the defender was jumping the route.
@larrymurphy67365 жыл бұрын
I agree, no time allowing R Wilson to go to another option, defender jumped the route & made a great play!

previously in the game, the Pats did stop Lynch. this actually made sense because if the pass missed then they would run Lynch. but if Lynch got stopped then the clock runs out

As a Eagles Fan That Play Call by Seattle Was The Worst I've Seen By a Offense at The 2 Yard Line Thankfully It Was Not The Eagles Otherwise I Would Had Been So Mad and Upset!

Anyway besides the SOLID, UN-ARGUABLE POINT I MAKE ABOUT WHY WILSON, BEING PLAY CALLER, OC GIVES WILSON THE PLAY, WILSON HAS THE FINAL SAY BEING THE ACTUAL QB CALLING IT IN THE HUDDLE, OBVIIUSLY HIM NOT CALLING A RUN HIMSELF SHOWED THAT HE WAS JUST A GOOD QB WHEN ABLE TO SCRAMBLE THAT DEVELOPED A DECENT DEEP BALL COMPLETION PERCENTAGE ......

As a Patriots fan, I feel bad for Lynch because it's so glaringly obvious that the powers that be didn't want the outspoken, loud, "thug" to be the Superbowl hero.

Ok. How did Deon grow his hair back? What procedure did he get? Asking for a friend whose bald, like me.
@zenglider2145 Жыл бұрын
Wilson led the receiver as if he should catch it with outstretch arms in open field in the clear so as not to break full speed stride. Instead, the pass needed to be zipped tight into the receiver's chest so nobody could intercept it. But yeah, the call itself was inexplicable. Maybe a fake to Lynch and roll-out toss to a sideline receiver, but not over the middle.

Belichick's greatest moment. Any other coach calls a time out. Maybe Paul Brown does not. Bill knew Pete was about to outthink himself.
