I recorded this video on the afternoon of 9 November 2019. WSDOT has finally enabled the tolling equipment in the tunnel, and drivers must now pay-per-use. About $1/each way during weekends, and more during weekdays. +$2 without a toll transponder (Good to Go pass). This video shows how the tunnel was operating on its first day of tolls.
Some corrections: (1) the pylons at the Republican exit were installed by WSDOT, not the City of Seattle. (2) WSDOT was predicting about 30% diversion, not the city (though the city is prepared). (3) the signage was not "brand new" that day, though it was newly uncovered. (4) The "Rainier Tower" is actually the "Rainier Square Tower" (I mix the two up frequently).

Don't worry Jake. The Central Artery Tunnel in Boston was always bumpy since it opened in 2003. I liked your video.

One of many reasons Pavement is bumpy because the supporting ground beneath is soft and always moving.

As a Phoenix driver, I’m shocked at how few lanes this freeway and tunnel have. While the I-10 tunnel near downtown Phoenix is nowhere near as long, it has way more lanes with shoulders wide enough park in if you break down.
@nightsniper8381

If I remember correctly, Phoenix’s freeway is essentially just a freeway with a park over it, not a tunnel technically. This is an actual tunnel so more lanes would be very very expensive
@danieldaniels7571
@danieldaniels7571 3 жыл бұрын
@@nightsniper8381 it’s most definitely a tunnel, but it was completely dug out and then covered with a deck, which was covered with dirt and then had a park built over the top of it. It wasn’t bored like this one in Seattle, though.

The toll is electronic: either pay by mail (picture is taken of vehicle registration plate), or by placing a toll tag in your car. The reader is located immediately after exiting the tunnel in both instances.

This tunnel was specifically constructed to withstand a megathrust earthquake. That’s actually why they built it to replace the viaduct (which was predicted to collapse if a megathrust ever occurred).

To avoid the previous Alaskan Way structure from collapsing during the next earthquake, therefore avoiding a similar catastrophe akin to what transpired in San Fransisco 1989 where 42 people died.

@@john-sebastianbarrera1884 You're right, but just to add on to that- viaducts are often considered very ugly today, and removing them can bring a lot of money to the city via redevelopment.

@@john-sebastianbarrera1884 the collapse happened in Oakland not San Francisco. San Francisco had a very similar freeway called the embarcadero freeway, but that was torn down in 1991 after damage from the earthquake, but no collapse or injuries happened. The freeway in Oakland was called the cypress and that collapsed in 1989.

@@pinakinkale yeah they go into debts because they spent all our tax money on all their big mansion and new cars new clothing and top of the line food. Think about how they got all those things and we the hard working people hardly have anything. So my friend did the calculation on how much do the state gets from of our tax per day from each person who works per ours, from each item purchase at the store to each gallon of gas witch is 45 cent per gallon from million's of people they earn 70 30 million per day. How is it even possible for them to even be in debt. They don't even spend a penny on homelessness they say they do but when I ask around it turns out that all the homeless people and shelter come from people who donated the stuff so tell me if I'm wrong. That tunnel is basically was built for business not built for an easier route

@NULL I completely agree, but Seattle has a vast public transportation system already , and the tunnel construction was necessary due to the imminent structural failure of the viaduct. That being said public transportation>>>>

Would you prefer to be taxed for maintenance costs? Or perhaps have the highway privatized? Most people would say no, hence the tolls.
