I remember always wanted to watch the show as a kid, but now that I am an adult I am disgusted by this.

It's so cool that we can watch this. It's so inspiring to see these animals that are so intelligent performing these cool stunts and are so well coordinated with the people and trainers. Even with all that, I would give up that type of entertainment for them to be in the wild, or at least not be left in the control of SeaWorld. There is a reason they are called "Killer" Whales and for them to have people train so close to them is just life risking. So many recorded deaths and injuries from them being raised in captivity , yet only one recorded injury that is arguably an attack in the wild. That shows that they aren't meant for captivity as it leads to health and mental problems to them and to hurt the trainers, yet, they are friendly and would sometimes communicate with you if you spot them in the wild. I miss seeing Killer Whales perform in SeaWorld when I was a young child, but honestly we can all live without Killer Whales doing a few jumps for us. If anyone can disagree with me on this, watch BLACKFISH.

The dorsal fin hanging down is actually because of their small enclosure. Normally they would be able to swim far distances in the ocean, using the fin as a stirrup, but if you're in such a tiny enclosure, you have nowhere to go, so the cartilage in the fin just hangs because they're not using it to swim far anymore...because of the tiny space they're in. :(

So your heart breaks at a dorsal fin that is bent over due to gravity because lack of bone in the fin, but not at the southern residents who are dying, or the wild orcas who are dying out there? Did the pod of 9 orcas who beached and killed themselves not make your heart break? J52 Sonic, 7 weeks old, dead, are you upset by that? Or are we upset at 21 captive orcas, who are spoiled rotten, have the BEST CARE IN THE WORLD? Really shows me how yall anti cap zombies have your priorities messed up BIG TIME...

This is human nature at its lowest. Being entertained by intelligent animals that are held in a small pool is disgusting. Orcas live in pods,(out in the ocean), and never leave their family unit. This kind of entertainment is heartbreaking and tragic. It should be illegal to keep these beautiful and intelligent animals in captivities. Depriving them of food so they will entertain us. If you want to be entertained by these beautiful animals, then take a boat out into the ocean and watch them in their natural environment, in family pods. In this video, you don't get to see their babies being taken away from its mother to perform at other parks. The mother having a nervous breakdown and crying out for her baby. Or the baby crying for its mother. They keep all of that fun for after hours, when the park is closed. Please!!! do not buy a ticket to these parks and encourage this industry to exist….. Have mercy and be a voice for these wonderful animals.

Not like they do, see and experience many different things in the wild lol. Every day the same vast ocean, just water every single direction they look, hunting for the same type of fish every day. What do anti-caps think wild orcas do all day besides swimming from one food source to the other? Having tea parties!? In marine parks, they are mentally and physically stimulated every day, no two days are the same, they see new things, new people, they learn new behaviours, play with new toys, etc.
@tastytoesies73538 жыл бұрын
The reason for the Orcas bent dorsal fin is because in the sea the water is a lot deeper, meaning there is more water pressure holding up the dorsal fin however, in captivity the water is shallower and the whales are mainly surfaced meaning the water pressure doesn't hold the fin up so it bends.

Most orcas in captivity at sea world were not saved. They were either bred from previous orcas they had or taken from the wild from their pod or mother. Orca whales live very short lives in captivity due to the stress of their environment and lack of space. Individual pods communicate differently, so you can imagine the lack of understanding amongst these dolphins. They also get into fights due to this. Saying it's right because the animals now wouldn't live in the wild is a load of crap, as is saying they were rescued.
@carriganyoung9 жыл бұрын
I totally agree that these animals should not be in captivity! There have been four deaths caused by orcas at Seaworld! And if you noticed on their biggest whale: Tillicum, he has a collapsed dorsel fin! That isn't natural, they may say it is, but it isn't!!!! To see more about the horrible things that they do to these intelligent creatures, watch 'Blackfish', it gives you a very close look on how they treat these orcas!

and one more thing just to enlighten you. these orcas which you speak of aren't really obeying. think about the fact that they had been captivated for years in a very small pool and trained there in exchange for a single piece of meat. the effect is that eventually they would adapt to these kind of routines and not knowing that they're already being tortured for the rest of their lives.
@meghanmiller96359 жыл бұрын

The melodramatic poseurs saying how horrible it is for an orca to be in captivity don't know that : 1) There are only 57 orcas in captivity worldwide. All this fuss over just 57. 2) How is it different than a horse owned by someone who rides the horse whenever they want?
@CT--gs1wj8 жыл бұрын
Horses are different than Orcas. I understand horses needs to cover large distances too, but there are ways horse owners overcome this. A good horse owner has a "paddock paradise system" where horses can exercise, AND a good horse owner takes his/her horse for a regular walk. For Orcas, there's no way to overcome this. Obviously we can't ride Orcas and take it for a swim. And you're comparing two animals with differences in intelligence. Orcas (and Dolphins in general) are more intelligent than horses. Orcas are sentients, they are self aware. They also have the capacity to feel emotions and they do have personalities. Locking up Orcas in captivity is like locking up humans in a house for 10 years with no contact with the outside world. How the humans would feel will be similar to how the Orcas would feel, no matter how big the enclosure is.

Put yourself in the Orchas shoes. How would you feel if you were taken from your pod and mother at the age 3 or 4? How would you feel if you were forced to preform every day. How would you feel if you were in a tiny pool that you barley have room to swim in? The Orchas in the wild have a beautiful life. There with their pods and mothers, they swim up too 100 miles a day, and they use the correct and natural social skills. In captivity Orchas have killed 4 trainers. In captivity Orchas are bored out of there mind. In captivity Orchas harm other Orchas. In the wild Orchas do not harm other Orchas. In the wild Orchas have the entire ocean to swim freely in. It is not right for beautiful animals to be used for our entertainment. All animals have the right to a free, happy, healthy, and loving life.

Not too sure what to write here so heres a recipe for Pancakes instead Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 3 tablespoons sugar 1 tablespoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1 1/4 cups milk, at room temperature 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, plus more as needed Now to make it 1. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. 2. In another bowl, beat the eggs and then whisk in the milk and vanilla. 3. Melt the butter in a large cast iron skillet or griddle over medium heat. 4. Whisk the butter into the milk mixture. Add the wet ingredients to the flour mixture, and whisk until a thick batter is just formed 5. Keeping the skillet at medium heat, ladle about 1/4 cup of the batter onto the skillet, to make a pancake. Make 1 or 2 more pancakes, taking care to keep them evenly spaced apart. Cook, until bubbles break the surface of the pancakes, and the undersides are golden brown, about 2 minutes. Flip with a spatula and cook about 1 minute more on the second side. Serve immediately or transfer to a platter and cover loosely with foil to keep warm. Repeat with the remaining batter, adding more butter to the skillet as needed. 6. Procedure for adding fruit to pancakes: Once the bubbles break the surface of the pancakes, scatter the surface with sliced or diced fruit, or chocolate chips, nuts, etc. Flip with a spatula and cook for 1 minute more, being careful not to burn toppings.

I don't think people who are horribly opposed to these things really grasp how clever these animals are. They're certainly able to appreciate what's going on in terms of perfecting skills and play and in some ways they get far more intellectually stimulated in a captive environment than out in the ocean while at the same time not having to deal with some of the problems of the wild, like starving to death if there happens to be a shortage of prey.

It wasn't just Blackfish-document that opened my eyes, but also studying from real books and finding true information. These animals aren't made for humans to get money. They deserve to stay free. Also, remember old film "Free Willy"? I am so proud, that in here, Finland, our only dolpfin aquarium is being cancelled. These intelligent animals should not be captured or killed. SeaWorld business depends on Captive Killer Whales. These whales can not cope to being in a barren concrete tank which for their size is tiny. They need hundreds of miles of ocean hundreds of metres deep to swim free and explore. Even the biggest new tanks (Blue World) 50ft deep 100ft wide would still be so tiny for this whale. It is a circus act for tourists. The whale goes mentally deranged it can no longer use its natural instincts like hunting, predation, migration, using its sonar in social pods and family life. It circles a tank with whales from completely different pods and communication, it bops on the surface, strange behaviour sitting at bottom of tank, they bully each other due to frustration, the dorsal fin flops over indication of a stressed whale. Basically the whales only stimulation are the circus shows as it can longer do any of its normal activities in the ocean. This causes psychological problems as they are very intelligent animals and need a very stimulating environment like the ocean. They are the top predator in the world, hence when confined in small tanks they sometimes attack the trainers as they want to do what they do in their natural habitat. Sea world DEPENDS on captive killer whales, it might not catch them from the wild, but it has to buy these whales from Marine Parks in Russia and japan that have caught them from the wild. Indirectly they are still getting them from the wild and destroying whale families. Close Down Sea World

I don't think Marine World really needed to go past a dolphin size animal/mammal. even though the Orca's look in good shape and happy to put on a show still doesn't show how they're enduring their captivity in such a small environment a life time through. but Marine World did do a good job of selecting how they birth their own Orca's and the care they provide for all the whales and animal's (and selecting from animals/mammal's born in captivity) does render a 100% appreciative response from the whales. when I first commented I made a mistake by using a recollection on marine world from clear back to the 1980's while there was controversy on the quality of the habitat's they provided for the Orca's which was an issue in the 1980's but marine world has definitely reconciled and done away with all of those problem's. for what marine world has accomplished in keeping a good environment and habitat's for their captive Animal's/Mammals they do deserve credit for that and I think they deserve for their show's to go on but I think they need to try to rehabilitate their whales back into the wild and not allow them to deteriorate in captivity. it's allot of work and resources in what Marine World has done to better the habitat for their whales and there has to be credit where credit is due. I watched some shows on youtube and seen their great progress. in the 1980's they were striving to keep one whale alive in captivity and now look at the progress it is great. got to admit it.

Apparently everyone in the comment section seems to know everything about orcas. Just wanna add, most of these orcas haven't even touched the ocean, so letting them free is like putting a human back to the jungle after living in a room playing with video games and eating chips and isolated from the entire world

Lots of animal experts in the comments I see..... SeaWorld isn’t perfect (no zoological facility is) but Blackfish was filled with misinformation.
@MandalorianDragonTrainer3 жыл бұрын
Zoo-focused vet student here. Dorsal fin collapse is NOT a sign of depression or disease. It likely has to do with collagen breakdown due to whales in human care spending more time at the surface than their wild counterparts. Collapse DOES occur in the wild, just not as commonly as in captivity. Of the whales currently alive at all 3 SeaWorld parks, only Corky, Ulises, and Katina were born in the wild and have been in human care for DECADES. SeaWorld hasn’t taken wild-caught orcas in 40+ years. These orcas were born in human care and do NOT have the skills to survive in the wild. “Setting them free” would kill them. Yes, the tanks could be larger. They were built in the 1980s when we had under 20 years of experience keeping orcas in human care. Most other zoo animals have been kept since the 1800s earlier, so we have much better ideas of what they need. SeaWorld had plans to significantly expand their orca habitats, but this was shot down by the city of San Diego (animal rights activists had a hand in it too, but that’s a different story). It was called the Blue World Project. There is nothing cruel about shows. Marine mammal training pioneered the positive reinforcement movement because there is quite literally no way to force an animal that size to do what you want. Positive reinforcement training is about building trust (this is hammered into us in vet school). Animals are never (and to be fair, physically can’t be) forced to “perform.” Training acts an enrichment for them. Shows are nothing more than training sessions in front of an audience and set to music. They are not depressed. Try looking at some other videos on accounts like EchoBeluga, and you can see the orcas playing with their toys and environmental enrichment even when trainers aren’t around. They aren’t starved. Starved orcas have “peanut head.” These animals receive complete monthly physicals from veterinarians to ensure they’re in superior health. SeaWorld is an AZA-accredited facility responsible for rescuing and rehabilitating 35,000+ animals. AZA accreditation is awarded to only 10% of zoological facilities in the US and demands superior animal care and a dedication to conservation and public education. Free Willy was a good movie, but it was PRETEND. Blackfish was an extraordinarily well-made propaganda film filled with misinformation. And at the end of the day, you got your wish. When this generation of orcas is gone, there will be no more left in human care in North America, and we will have lost the incredible opportunity we had to know and study these animals.

Some people are saying that the orcas look happy. How would they know? The orcas are probably performing because they know they'll be in trouble if they don't. The pool that they live in at Seaworld is way smaller than any public pool I've seen. I hope the orcas at Seaworld will be freed one day.

Man some of these haters man, they're quite shocking. They say it's wrong as if the Bible says "Thou shall not keep whales captive" or something, since they're all like "There is no justification for this cause it's just wrong!" I mean if you really feel that way you can feel free to feel that way but that's just an opinion. Nobody is convinced otherwise of a topic at hand off of someone's opinion. Like vegetarians for example. Nobody makes you eat steak but the rest of us have a right to do so. No different with whale shows. Also, people seem to look for ONE little thing wrong with Seaworld, and suddenly they are evil and need to shut down. Just because people support it doesn't necessarily mean every little thing about it is perfect. Anyway Seaworld lovers, ignore the haters, and let's all enjoy Seaworld together.

***** Doesn't take away from the fact that they are animals. They are underneath us. All animals are underneath us. We work, we go to school, we invent, we build buildings, we drive cars, we use technology, What do orcas do? They eat, swim, poop, and die, that's really it. Keep in mind of course, I don't mean any disrespect to orcas (they are my favorite animal, actually). And yes I get it they have pods, but we have families too (actually, all living things have families, orcas are just no exception).

You don't get the point, don't you? Orcas or dolphins have bigger brain than fuckin tunas or sharks, or whatwver. They can think, they're capable to feel sad when they're separated from their family. There's something enormously more compelling about seeing animals interact with humans, especially really clever animals like orcas and dolphins. The old Seaworld shows were really amazing. Having a few captive individuals is also a great opportunity to learn more about them in ways that just aren't possible in the wild. Seaworld's park in Orlando is a great place to spend a day just for the walk anyway. It's a beautiful location.

I think it's sad when a wild animal is contained in a restrictive environment . There's other ways we can learn about and enjoy animals. I've been to a few Safari Parks where at least the space is a bit larger and resembles natural habitat somewhat . These mammals are used to living in the open ocean , not an over-sized fish tank. There are also quite a few whale watching tours , whereby you go on a boat and can watch whales and dolphins up close in their own habitat.

People need to lay off SeaWorld. Geez, people. Most of these animals are rescues from the wild. They would've died otherwise. And this helps educate people on sea animals in general, like zoos. Whom by the way have helped offset extinction for animals in the past. Back off already. You can complain all you wish about animals in captivity, or the death of trainers, but truly when has any leap for knowledge not have risks attached? I don't see anyone complaining pets when dogs have killed more humans than any documented killer whale case. Yet we still keep our pups. Because it is worth the risk. So please. Silence.
@loserkyd73939 жыл бұрын
RacoonDog90 "Rescues from the wild" How about Corky, was she rescued? No, captured. "They would've died otherwise". Sure a killer whale, the top predator of the ocean. And dogs are domesticated are killer whales? No. Just prisoners.
@loserkyd73939 жыл бұрын
RacoonDog90 I never said they abuse the orcas. Just that they are prisoners because they aren't out in the wild. "not sure what you mean by them being a top predator when they can die too" I'm not saying they can't die either. They cant be killed by another animal is what I mean.

That's why $W hasn't answered until now, with their mega-million ad campaign, and all it does is reiterate the same tired selling points. "We wuv our animals, we'd never hurt them. OOOOOH, look, Orca dances to rock music! HOW CUTE." NO-ONE has said the Orca are abused. The NATURE of their captivity, IS the abuse. Oh, good grief, why do I bother. I think Sea World has a pretty impressive safety record considering how many years they have been doing this. Nobody becomes an orca trainer without knowing things could go wrong. I think if they are allowed to have orcas in captivity the trainers should be allowed to swim with them. You don't even have to get involved with orcas or tigers to die in a large animal related accident, try horseback riding.

Vilas Atkins I hope you were ironic, or else, go home!
"The Cove" exaggerates a lot of things to make a point. The animals are treated like royalty by their caretakers at sea world, they enjoy doing shows and learning new behaviors. Its common to think that the sloping dorsal fin is a sign of stress, but this is not true. The dorsal fin is simply a muscle that relaxes in activity because it does not not to stand up to high pressures of the deep ocean when the whale is chasing prey. Please do your research before making nasty comments about captivity
