When I was in my early 20's (before tattoos became as ubiquitous as they are today) I read a few tattoo magazines and had as good as booked my appointment with the tattooist. In passing I mentioned to my neice that I was going to get a tribal band on my upper arm. She screwed up her face and said "Urgh! Don't do that, EVERYONE is getting one of those!" I suddenly realised that she was right. I lost interest in getting tattooed there and then and now, at the grand old age of 54 I don't have a single tattoo. And that is the way it is staying.

Tattoos often represent something significant and meaningful to the bearer. But to others, it can represent an easy date, research has found. A study revealed that men were more likely to perceive a woman with a tattoo as more sexually promiscuous than those without. Swami and Furnham conducted an experiment that tested how men regarded women with an inking, by making subjects sport a temporary tattoo on the beach. And it would appear that men were more likely to approach those with a tattoo quicker than those without. Tests also showed that men rated their chances of scoring a date with the tattooed women higher than if they had tattoo-free skin.

I knew a woman who got a rose on her breast as a teen. Then the natural process of putting on weight and losing it kind of moved the skin around and now it looks like a cabbage and she hates it. Personally I find art on the skin very distracting when getting intimate and I cannot imagine forming a long term relationship with someone who is decorated in prominent and intimate places. Some people seem to like them but it seems to me the tattoos can have some very negative effects. After all the person who puts it on when young is usually a very different person 20 years later and might not appreciate the art as much as before and removal is not an easy process.

Here's my analogy to tatoos; When I read a meaningful book, I choose not to highlight or underline in it. That way, if I reread it years later, I can see it fresh and from my new perspective. Sometimes I may place a small asterick then write some insight/thought down in a bottom margin, but.... I like having the opportunity to see things afresh daily, with access to old thoughts on the side. Tatoos are more like highlighting, which years later can distract you from another paragraph or line which holds new meaning, because we're always changing. One day I may want to identify with a certain memory, but give me a year, a decade, time and experiences, it can change. Sure, love is forever, but do you need a tatoo to remind you? That's ironically the opposite of how I think a significant memory works.

I had a frined who did tattoos, he was always asking me to make one, I was very reluctant and he was kind of annoying. As time passed I wasn't his friend like I used to, I think he is very childish, so I ended the friendship lol... just imagine having to deal with a bad tattoo that would always remind me of his childish behaviour and everything annoying about him, I would have to laser it off... lol... so glad I didn't do shit.

My brother is a gamer who’s in his 30’s now. He’s got tattoos on himself that he got when he was 18-19 of images/symbols he liked from some of his fav video games. Very very sad haha...... I have a hunch he regrets them now although he’d never actually admit it because he covers them up with clothing whereas when he was younger he wore singlets a lot to show them off. Those tats of his will look so f*cking corny when he’s in his 40’s/50’s & beyond. My wife thinks his tats look absolutely cringe worthy. The funny thing is that he has a highly respectable job, and if the people he worked with learned of his tats they’d never look at him the same way again haha.

Those of us who do NOT have a tattoo are in the minority. I also observe that the people, men, and women who have the most tattoos can least afford to get even ONE, much less multiple tats. You can see where their priorities lie. Certainly not good decision making. I especially question the women who get huge tattoos on their chests. What are they thinking?

@void-citizen5 жыл бұрын
You think the only point to ever getting a tattoo was to make a statement? Interesting.
@fridgemagnet5 жыл бұрын
@@void-citizen Interesting and true ! For thousands of years years tattoos have been used across cultures as rites of passage, allegiance and status, all of which allow the observer to see which tribe someone comes from, what social status the person has in their society. Soldiers to this day have tattoos showing their regimental crest, sailors would have tattoos to show they had passed the cape. Yakuza (Japanese mafia) have distinctive tattoos to show their allegiance to the organisation, pacific islanders tattoo their faces to show their warrior status, ALL of these things are clear statements to others, they are communicating information to the observer. How many people do you know have multiple tattoos and yet never show them, or go out of their way to make sure they are never seen? Oh and yes, we all know some chick who has a minuscule tattoo of a butterfly on her arse cheek that 'only my boyfriend gets to see"
@void-citizen5 жыл бұрын
@@fridgemagnet yeah me and a lot of other people have tattoos, some visible some not, and it's really not *always* about making a statement. A lot of tats happen because someone wants to involve certain symbols or imagery into how they appear but it's not always while clothed, and it's certainly not always a clear "statement" to anyone that happens to see it. A lot of tattoos are so personal or private that no one even sees them besides a partner. I know a lot of people without tattoos too, and they dont seem to be so stuck up about it. If you want to put a piece of art you like on your skin, it's simply not that big a deal if you understand all the implications. If you're afraid of the pain or cant forsee actually being happy with it long term then just dont go through with.. You're not "making a statement" by not getting a tattoo that's dumb af. I dont think most have to rationalize why they *dont* have one.
