They are one of my favorite country bands of all time. Great musicians, great songs, and a great lead singer. It's impossible to divorce this song from the politics of the time however as their criticism of the Iraq war (now seen as completely justified criticism in hindsight) and President Bush because they were essentially black-balled afterwards by country radio and attacked by a large segment of the country music audience and peers. They faced unbelievable vitriol for fairly innocuous comments. And this song was their hit response. To understand the background gives the song more poignancy and meaning.

This song was a statement maker from The Chicks (formerly the Dixie Chicks), during the Bush administration, while they were overseas Natalie Maines made comments that were disagreeing with the Bush administration. They were blacklisted by country music which led Natalie to go solo in rock for a while, they just reformed around the time covid hit. The 2 women with Natalie are actually sisters, Matti (not sure on the spelling) is absolutely amazing on that violin.

It was truly in poor taste. She could have said the same thing here, in the US, and it wouldn’t have had the effect as it did with her saying it in a foreign country. This country is full of patriots and full of families who’s loved ones died in Iraq during that time. They were there to make sure we live in peace here. No more 911. There is no greater testament to the strength of a country’s democracy than the fact that millions of people freely choose, everyday, to defend it. When she said these disparaging remarks those people were listening(myself included) & their main audience are those patriots I referenced earlier. It didn’t end well for them. I don’t listen to them anymore and I was a big fan at the time. Sadly, no more.

This song has a story you just have to know what happen before they released it. They made a comment, one that didn't rub well with many people. The comment was of our former President George W. Bush. They were almost canceled before this cancel culture even started. They were receiving death threats and being told that all they should do is sing and shut up. This is their way of confronting it and saying they are not sorry for what they said. They won't back down. Some strong ladies. I love them.

Oh it tells a story, but you'd have to know how big and how famous the Dixie Chicks were in the Country world...and how one statement or opinion totally destroyed their lives, i.e. loss of a record label, death threats, stalkers, their families (children) threatened, how the media egged it on....ridiculous things that never should have happened. It shows the true paradox in Country music between women and men...a few years back Hank Jr. in a televised statement compared the President to Hitler....ummm...nothing happened to Hank...people laughed about it, nobody cared. Had a female artist said that, their career would have ended and their life would have been destroyed. The Country Genre is great music, but the stereotypes that still exist are archaically insane. The Chicks have and always will be one of the greatest groups in Country music, as a Texan I never lost one ounce of respect for them because they voiced an "opinion" who cares, people do it every damn day. You should check out more of their music, "Traveling Soldier", "Wide Open Spaces", "Goodbye Earl".

@@seanscanlon9067 wrong. She’s the one who wore the FUTK T-shirt and constantly promoted the rhetoric. She called TK a warmonger since he sung a patriotic song. SHE’s the one who went on stage at every show and ran her mouth, wouldn’t shut up.

@@jwmson7791 You do get right that merely saying someone is wrong when they are right, does not stop them from still being right? Do you think she picked Toby Keith randomly? Why not Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson or Tim McGraw? I was at that show in London and what Natalie Maines said about a lame duck president sending her fellow Americans to die in an illegal war so that he could save face, was: “We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas.” and she said it on 10th March 2003. Toby Keith on his tours later began performing in front of a backdrop that featured a gigantic image of her with Saddam Hussein and that led to the 'F-U-T-K' t-shirt as a retort from her. And we saw on 6th January how many clueless, gullible, low information Americans can act, so he helped rile up those idiots against her with the threat of violence. And she did not call him a warmonger and this is the trouble with people in that someone will say ABC and they hear XYZ. What she actually said about his song 'Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue, and even then only when she was asked about it, was: "It's ignorant, and it makes country music sound ignorant". Well considering the song contains the lyrics: "And it feels like the whole wide world is raining down on you Brought to you courtesy of the red white and blue" and "And you'll be sorry that you messed with The U.S. of A. 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass It's the American way" I think she had a point and what is patriotic about that? It is just jingoistic bullshit. And did she really: "....constantly promote the rhetoric and was the one who went on stage at every show and ran her mouth and wouldn’t shut up". Or is that just you deciding that?
