I'm learning to fly in Maui, Hawaii. I took a huge leap and bought my own airplane to learn in, a 1976 Grumman American AA1-B Tr2. After some basic maintenance and a few new parts, I'm taking to the tropical skies to learn to fly.

I Love it actually, yeah he's rough, yeah he's brash, but he's fair. You're doing something thats really easy to get killed doing. Looking very good for your 2nd flight. I also just bought a Grumman, AA1-A. 108 HP VS 115 HP for you, also slightly lower gross weight for me. TR2 is the more desired version of them. The way this plane is flown will transfer with you to much more complicated aircraft. Saw you over on Mojogrip Nate and wandered across. Very impressed with your natural ability as a flyer and calm demeanor. The instructor didn't have the best 'bedside manner' however did know his stuff and you were the beneficiary of that knowledge. The most challenging for me as a ghost rider on your flight was the radio. Not sure my memory would see me able to repeat back the transmission lol! Anyway well done mate and subscribed.

Thanks for watching and the subscription! The instructor and I worked out our communication issues after this video. He was an excellent instructor, who really does know how to fly. The radios were super tough when combined with flying. I'd be concentrating on a turn or something, and the controller would say something to me, and I could just feel my brain short circuit. It was a crazy feeling! Lots of practice and it did become second nature though. Do you fly too?

@@NateVolk No not a flyer Nate. Only one recreational flight in the early 90's on a stop over in Hawaii. Took a helicopter flight and the pilot had learnt his trade on Huey gunships in Vietnam - needless to say was a bit 'stressy' lol! Was just the best experience though. KZfaq is a great medium for a close up 'experience' of whatever might take your fancy. Your flight illustrates this well helped by the aircraft being a 'back to basics' machine. The analogue dials saw me able to understand your instructor's thought processes and with a tweaking of his manner then I'm sure he became good value. I also follow this pilot kzfaq.infovideos with his emphasis on the flying aspect - you may find it of interest.

Nice flying, Nice Airplane. Personally I have had soft instructors, and I have had harder instructors and I prefer harder. In the air, when you are under instruction I don't mind them barking at you sometimes. It helped me learn faster what to do and what not to do. Flying with a laid back instructor I felt like I had to constantly ask them If I was doing ok, where a harder instructor I knew would let me know. Sometimes it is good to have it drilled into you.
@NateVolk
@NateVolk 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jeremy. Having it drilled into me paid off the other day when I lost two cylinders about 250' up past the ends of the runways. I had just enough power to clear the trees, miss the beach, and land on the downwind after declaring an emergency. Made the pavement, no damage to the airframe, and was able to cost off the runway safely. Sometimes easiest is not best!

I first soloed in one of these in 1977 and went on to teach in them in the late 70's and early 80's. I found that the great majority of my students who learned in one of these had little trouble transitioning to more complex types. The trouble with them was related to high density altitude which would decrease take off performance and increase ground speeds ( for any ias ) on landing. I liked the Cheetah (AA5A) for instrument instruction. Compared to these, the competing Cessnas seemed slow and ploding. However when operating out of higher altitude airports combined with higher OATs, the Cessnas offered greater flexibility. Just my opinion, and based on 35 year old memories... This instructor seemed to be both through and relaxed, a nice combination, and the islands looked like a beautiful place to learn to fly! I'm wondering how the plane got there; is there a ferry tank ( or bladder) that gave it enough range to get to HI from CA? Or did some one have to ship it there in pieces?
@NateVolk
@NateVolk 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Its been super fun and challenging to fly. Yesterday the wind was 15deg off runway and gusting 14-26 knots :) Luckily here we don't often have high DA altitudes. My instructor is great, I like flying with him a lot! I'm not sure how it got here, I'm assuming it was shipped. I don't think there is enough room for enough fuel to actually fly it here... What I understand is that its relatively easy to remove the wings and rudder cap, flip the wheels, and roll it into a 20' container. Thanks for the comments!

wondering what you thought of the AA1-A vs the B if have experience or knowledge with the 2. Reason ask consider looking at one, field I am at is 3200 and density can be above 5000 often. Using cessna 150 climbs like a sloth.

I owned a Grumman Tiger for a number of years, as I was getting back into flying after a 28 year hiatus and getting instrument rated. It seemed that the student was doing very, very well for a second lesson. I thought that the instructor must have been helping him on the rudder during takeoff because the effect of prop caused torque was handled nicely (no back and forth corrections over the center line. Student made a number of rookie mistakes (coordinating some turns, missing altitude goals, rate of climb, maintaining standard turns, etc.), but he seemed to be learning quickly. There is no way I could have let a second lesson student land a Tiger in a crosswind. Maybe get close to the runway, but crabbing, choosing the correct time to use right rudder and how much to depress the pedal to straighten out just enough - that was asking too much too close to the ground. I saw the other comments regarding the instructor, but he seemed ok to me. I would have kept him for the duration.

I got a great deal on the plane because it was not running and had sat for a few years. The plane, repairs, instruction and fuel ran just under $15k to get my PPL. I spent a lot of time fixing little things, and having a great mechanic that will let you do simple things like removing inspection covers can really save some money. The AA5 is great, I'd learn in that for sure. The AA1 is a little small, but it worked perfect for me and is super cheap to operate.

You seem very good for a 2 hr pilot. The type of timed turns and descents you were performing seemed more applicable to instrument rating training than Basic Private Pilot. If the TO trim was set properly the plane would have accelerated to 90KTS without any forward pressure and maybe one or two micro trim adjustments. Got to trim that plane accurately and it will fly with two fingertips. It is a fly by the numbers plane with super light responsive controls. 700+HR AA5B CFI MEI

Thanks Fred! The controls are so light its hard to learn how to properly trim. I can literally move my head around and steer the plane :) I've been flying a T206 recently, and the heaviness of the controls has taught me a lot about proper trim and not fighting the aircraft. That's one plane if I fight it, I get tired super fast!
@ManNomad
@ManNomad 5 жыл бұрын
It is a fly by the numbers plane. Recommend you fly with known power settings and precise pitch settings and you will be rewarded with fingertip intuitive corrections. 90KTS for your initial climb out and all approaches. Never attempt to land if you are not stabilized. Never attempt to land if you are not stabilized. 90 on glideslope will give you perfect flexibility then runway in sight dump the flaps (smoothly) will give you 70kts short final without noticeable pitch input. Be very careful that your airspeed is stable and you will master the airplane, The key is precise pitch holding on the AH. Fly under the hood as much as possible. Your being on centerline and flair were really good and is critical. You will develop an amazing scan under the hood. PS. I would never use Carb heat in that plane unless you are need it, which will probably be never. (only if there is a loss of power or per checklist) As per the POH is says "if required" It is not a Cessna!. The intake is warm by design and carb heat can foul plugs and draw available power unnecessarily when you really need it. You will be board flying anything else once you can master ILS approaches and long XC under the hood in the Tiger. I'm really envious and miss my plane. Enjoy this Tiger as long as you are a pilot. It is the best performing bang for buck and a great investment. Never flown any plane that performed better the the POH than a AA5B.
@NateVolk
@NateVolk 5 жыл бұрын
@@ManNomad Thank you for the tips! This is an AA1-B, so a little less power than a Tiger, but I love it nonetheless! I'll look into the carb heat settings as well. Its definitely a challenge here as our normal winds are 20-30 degrees cross and are 18 gusting to 35kts most days :) I really appreciate the feedback!
@ManNomad
@ManNomad 5 жыл бұрын
One more thing...The plane is extremely controllable and forgiving is stalls, to a point. If you are cross controlled and airspeed is dropping you can enter a snap roll and be inverted as I can attest during a cross controlled stall series. Good news is recovery is rapid if you use coordinated smooth input. Bad news...You can instantly loose 1000'+ in the recovery from inverted and pull enough G's to scare you. Plan any advanced maneuvers with and avoid abrupt airspeed changes at a safe altitude. Unusual attitude or acrobatic courses are fun and will give you instinctual inputs for a safe recovery from unusual situations. e.g. wake turbulence, accelerated stalls and weather induced abnormal attitudes.(if you haven't already)
@ManNomad
@ManNomad 5 жыл бұрын
AA1B is more like a submarine with wings. (affectionately) A little bit under powered, less forgiving, and bleeds off airspeed more rapidly. Same concept though. More critical to stabilize your airspeeds and fly by the numbers than a Tiger. As well as non-existent float if your speed is correct over the fence. under 500' rollout is doable. I think you said you came from a C206? Wow. That's like going from a semi truck to a Porsche 911 I did have carb icing one time in a AA1B and caused a significant and sudden power loss but minimized with leaning. The POH I have says to apply carb heat to check for operation and to leave on if "known icing conditions" Your high humidity in HI is a probable yes to carb heat before landing. Disregard the V speeds I gave. But amplify everything else. Super fun plane and more like a High performance experimental than a certified plane. Welcome the the fighter-pilot world. The 150hp ver. is a sweet mod in the future as well as aux tanks. If you ever are forced to land follow the checklist and COMMIT. have actions memorized. Crack the canopy and maintain/trim for best glide. As long as you are in control you can crash but will survive. Stall or loose control and the outcome is very bad. As witness to both. You will blow the doors off 152's for the same fuel flow. She is slippery for sure. Be aware she flies a lot different with two people than solo.

I learned in class C airspace, pretty busy with lots of traffic and tour traffic close by. It really helps to listen to the radio when you aren't flying. LiveAtc . com is a good place to try and grab a feed of the radio calls. Try and understand what the controllers are telling people and picture the airspace in your head. Have fun with your training!

I'd suggest to just focus on it while you can. Look for scholarships and grants, there are tons available for young pilots. As for the plane choice, get whatever fits your needs that you can afford. You're going to need an IFR plane with at least 750 hours of life left on the motor :)
@coronapilot69
@coronapilot69 6 жыл бұрын
I would also suggest checking into the Civil Air Patrol for your area. 9th grade is a great time to get started learning to fly! Civil Air Patrol has a program for getting your pilot license. My other suggestion would be to go down to your local muni airport and just hang out,if there is a flight school pop in there and ask questions or offer to help with tasks like changing oil in the planes or washing/degreasing in exchange for some flight time....youll also learn more about the planes if you can get your hands a little dirty... talk to the pilots you see hanging around, talk to the mechanics (probably not while they are working though lol ) eventually, somone will offer to take you up even if its just around the traffic pattern. My advice would be just jump into this and dont look back..otherwise you will be waiting around your whole life for the right moment. Good luck to you and happy flying! As far as airplanes go i am currently looking a Grumman Yankee and a C150K Aerobat. Both have a $20k-ish entry point possible for a basic VFR platform, and have low operating costs.

Glare shield says no hold and instructor holds it.
@NateVolk
@NateVolk 3 жыл бұрын
Right. Also keep in mind some context about the plane too. The no hold warning is really meant to keep you from holding on there when exiting and entering the plane, as it is a low wing aircraft, you always look for something to grab onto when climbing in or out. You can't see it, but at the top of the windscreen it says "hold". So the intention of the instructions are really aimed towards entering and exiting the plane. Its not that fragile that you can't hold onto the glare shield, or set your headset on it, or apparently hit it to emphasize a point :)

@NateVolk
@NateVolk 5 жыл бұрын
Many airports report the weather, Kahului has a voice recording that tells you wind direction, speed, gusts, temp, etc. You dial in a certain radio frequency and listen to the recording. It is normally updated every hour and given a code, a letter of the alphabet so that the controllers know you have the latest report. So calling clearance and telling them my requested departure with Romeo (R) means I have the weather info that was assigned the letter "R". If it has been updated since, they would tell me the current weather is Sierra "S". And the instructor gets paid the same whether he is in my plane or a rented one from the flight school. Actually he gets paid more because the flight school does not take a cut of his fees.
