Amarna (/əˈmɑːrnə/; Arabic: العمارنة‎, romanized: al-ʿamārnah) is an extensive Egyptian archaeological site that represents the remains of the capital city newly established (1346 BC) and built by the Pharaoh Akhenaten of the late Eighteenth Dynasty, and abandoned shortly after his death (1332 BC).
The name for the city employed by the ancient Egyptians is written as Akhetaten (or Akhetaton-transliterations vary) in English transliteration. Akhetaten means "Horizon of the Aten".
The area is located on the east bank of the Nile River in the modern Egyptian province of Minya, some 58 km (36 mi) south of the city of al-Minya, 312 km (194 mi) south of the Egyptian capital Cairo and 402 km (250 mi) north of Luxor. The city of Deir Mawas lies directly west across from the site of Amarna. Amarna, on the east side, includes several modern villages, chief of which are el-Till in the north and el-Hagg Qandil in the south.
The region flourished from the Amarna Period up to the later Roman era.

I adore Akhenaten and his vision. Such an ahead of his time thinker, he saw the mess coming soon on Egypt and he wanted to turn back this process, what eventually still sickens contemporary Egyptian society. I enjoy walking in Amarna, seeing all this intellectual, creative and innovative town, its art and the choice this dramatic landscape.

Omar, if you search the history of the capital of Brazil, named Brasília, you will find plenty of similarities related to Akhenaten. Both cities were built in a short amount of time as the new capital of the country, next to an artificial lake, shaped as a bird and sectorized. JK (Brazil's President at the time) died 16 years after the construction of the city, same as Akhenaton. His body now lies on a mastaba in the center of Brasília.

Thank you for the incredible video and that awesome tour guide. You can see the joy on his face as he shows us the various artifacts from ancient Egypt. It is interesting that this Egyptian king worship one God way before the 3 main monotheistic religions were founded. I hope to travel to Egypt one day.

You aren't kidding about the scorpions there. I saw many south of Aswan during a Lake Nasser cruise. They are a light, clear-like species and you can barely see them until they are too close. In the U.S., our desert scorpions are black. Probably just as nasty, but at least you can see them before they are within stinging range. Just a warning to Egyptian tourists: watch where you sit out in the desert and make sure nothing is moving on the blocks.

May I ask how I can get that guide Mohd Jaffar or any guide? Do we just go there (assume the driver will know where) and then at the ticket booth, there are guides who will take us around? Thanks Omar. This was a very informative video.

Lol. Dark doesn’t equate to being black, and Africa and Africans don’t and shouldn’t equate to blackness. Egypt is ever diverse, and we don’t need that racialized mess associated with us 👏🏾
