Secret BATTLE of LANG VEI In Siege Of Khe Sanh 1968 - Through Vietnam on Truong Son road P10
According to Wikipedia, the Battle of Ta May - Lang Vei was a pivotal battle in the Route 9 - Khe Sanh Campaign of the South Vietnamese Liberation Army, which took place on the night of February 6, dawn on the 7th. February 1968. This was the first battle involving the Tank and Armor forces of the South Vietnamese Liberation Army during the Vietnam War.
Lang Ve is a stronghold of the US Special Forces in the South in the defense system on Route 9 - Khe Sanh, held by 4 companies of CIDG commandos and a number of US troops. Before the battle, there were about 520 Royal Lao soldiers from Huoi San fortress to Lang Ve (see also Battle of Huoi San), so the number of soldiers in the fortress was about 900. Weapons and equipment included 2 106 mortars. 7mm, 4 81mm mortars, 16 61mm mortars, 2 106mm DKZ guns, 4 57mm DKZ guns, 27 M-79 guns, 75 M72 LAW anti-tank guns, 390 Claymore mines and many submachine guns, machine guns, machine guns .
According to documents of the Liberation Army of South Vietnam, to attack this fortress, they mobilized forces including the 24th Infantry Regiment, the 2nd Battalion, 675th Artillery Regiment, 2 engineer battalions, and 2 companies. commandos, 1 company of anti-aircraft machine guns, 1 flamethrower platoon. In particular, there were 2 armored companies of Battalion 198, Regiment 203 of the South Vietnamese Liberation Army with 22 PT-76 tanks (but only 16 participated in this battle).
The victory of Lang Ve gave the South Vietnamese Liberation Army a very solid foothold to attack Khe Sanh.[10] This victory proves that MACV has misjudged that the infantry of the Liberation Army is not capable of using tanks on the battlefields of the South. The failure at Lang Ve also proved that the US infantry's anti-tank equipment had many problems, when the M72 LAW anti-tank gun, despite firing many times, could not destroy a PT-76 ...
