Today we are going to West London’s Kensington Gardens to visit and feed some wild but very friendly parakeets. 🦜
Parakeets are native to Africa but there are around 50,000 in Britain. Nobody really knows how this non-native birds came to the UK.
A spokesman for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds said: "There’s no evidence to show they have a negative impact on native species. But you should always feed birds the right type of food.”
Our secret sweet spot for parakeet bird watching is located in the heart of Kensington Gardens, just a minute walk from the Peter Pan statue. They are not hard to miss as you could hear their chirping when you get to the location.
I brought an apple 🍎 with me but feeding the birds is totally optional. Just watching the birds gives an equally joyful experience and helps with balancing the Park’s wildlife.
Hope you enjoyed this short clip, showcasing London’s friendly parakeets. Join me again next time! 🎥

In America, what we call parakeets is generally the smallest of the parrot family. These are much bigger than what I was expecting.

Does anyone actually know where they all came from? Because they are everywhere
@Wanderizm
@Wanderizm 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marcus! It is still a mystery to date. But there are a couple of theories: 1. One rumour is the birds escaped from the set of 1950s film The African Queen, which was being filmed at Isleworth Studios. This theory came to be as Isleworth, in the London Borough of Harrow, is one area where lots of parakeets are often seen. 2. Several birds escaped during the Great Storm of 1987. 3. Musician Jimi Hendrix released a breeding pair into the wild in 1960. Source: www.express.co.uk/news/nature/1333971/Why-are-there-wild-parakeets-in-London

The first colony of parakeets was spotted in 1850 in Thetford Norfolk. They are a hybrid of two subspecies, one from the Himalayas the other from South India. They spread across the UK and their numbers rocketed about fifteen years ago. They live mainly in city centers and are classed as a pest in the countryside due to the damage they do to orchards and vineyards. There is little evidence that they are harming native bird species but this may change as their numbers are increasing. Their numbers are increasing across Europe as well. They are a major problem in Hawaii and measures to control them have failed.

i was here at the Long Water,recently and it looks as if the Royal parks are discouraging feeding the birds,with signs in this area not to feed them. Shame,because,as well as the Parakeets,if you were patient and still enough,you could hand feed Blue,Great and Coal Tits, and Robins as well.

Many of these tourists are very selfish and just using the animals for their own purposes. Because so many tourists insist on feeding these parakeets a non varied diet of peanuts or apples, ie high fat and high vit C foods, many of them are sick with liver problems. How many tourists can this tiny park take, stamping all over the grass and killing the insect life? Considering the children very often have no respect for wildlife whatsoever, chasing the birds with sticks etc. The tourist has lead to an overpopulation of a non native species which is why hundreds of parakeets are culled by the royal parks every couple of years. The more you feed them, the more the royal parks will be obliged to kill them, which is very stressful for the birds left behind.
