Wow, it's in fantastic condition, I hope they start doing tours and stuff to help with the maintenance costs, some people would love a "Glamping weekend in a nuclear bunker" they could charge a fortune.

My mates dad owned one of these, spent a few nights in it in primary school! Got a few books on bunkers in my 20s and this one always interested me due to its size, thanks for the tour Ian and Kris

Ps, according to his dad when he bought eastern zone HQ,he was ordered to not unblock a sealed door in the basement, that lead to a tunnel from Edinburgh. upon my later research this seems to have connected to the BT hardened tunnel, according to my dad's friend who was a bt engineer and had been in it,you could drive a bus through it. Probably linking the top-secret u.s. bunker not far away.from many reliable sources I have spoke to(one worked in it one helped decomission) this u.s. bunker had a lift for access, very similar to Portland, down your way. It still has top secret Statius due to the strategic location and is massive, very cool to stand on as you can tell it's there but can only dream of getting down inside.hope this tickle's your brain, like it did mine.

the PCB/ Card you picked up is from a rack based fire alarm system that would have been installed in the bunker when it was upgraded to an RSG, the original system would have been a flag and lamp system.

Very interesting. We have a lot of such more or less abandoned, hidden and secret bunkers in Sweden too. Most built in the late 40's, 50's and 60's. Some are still in operation.

Great video and very nice bunker. Unfortunately though this bunker was built before the full scientific understanding of the effects of nuclear EMP in the early 1960's and therefore has no protection against such effects. The fact that it has been constructed only partially below ground would make it particularly vulnerable. This problem was a contributing factor to the abandonment/sell off of a large number of government owned bunkers.

One of your best vids , well done ! Much more serious . One thing though , point question whatever you want to call it .. all these ‘secret’ places and especially this one , this place is huge , thousands of tons of earth would have been removed to form this place , many tons of concrete shipped in , no end of contractors /installers used , surely not so ‘secret’ with so many people involved .. ?

It's worth bearing in mind that these were constructed within the wake of the second world war, where 'careless talk costs lives' will have been drilled into the public at large. Many will have seen first hand the consequences of being careless, not least the threat of the Official Secrets Act. It is only in today's generation of vanity that everybody will have wanted to be 'the first' to know about the precious things of the shop. Also when you visit some of the smaller communities which surround the various installations across the country, many of the locals "know about it". There is, of course, a vast difference between knowing about something and blabbing about it. It was a very different day.

Wow, I'd think it would cost at least 1 million or more to restore the place to decent condition but my god what an asbestos nightmare. And I bet it would eat $5,000 a month in electrical. You'd have to close down whole areas to save electricity. I'd love to see the blueprints and electrical / plumbing diagram of this place. I bet it's insane lol. Lots of power in there.

50:00 the mess sadly looks very much as most "refits" that I've seen, the contractor coming in to do the work removes whatever they need to, to enable the refit. I'm not saying that's what has happened here, it's just the amount of money wasted within industry is shocking. A building getting refitted will have the old interior literaly ripped out and thrown away, you'll start to find some salvage/recycle being done but not much. Lovely to see "TheSecretVault" good stuff.

I'd have loved a proper look at the windings of the transformers! Unlike most transformers, they are dry so the windings exposed to the air to cool them rather than using the insulating oil as a coolant. Also the BT "Krone" field would have been fed by a BT multiplexer so pretty much all those phones fed by a couple of fibers or even a co-ax! It's a shame none of the BT line end equipment was left behind. Also I think the Gent's of Leicester wall mounted batteries etc, would have been part of a fire alarm system rather than BT, maybe a remote monitoring system, for other parts of the site?
