I have fond memories on our drive back home from my dear great grandma's funeral playing Final Fantasy Legend. To say Grandma was formative to my growing years would be an understatement. The funeral was emotional to say the least but had connected with many people there in such a way that now 30 years later have yet to replicate.

I love to see all these modern throwback games like this and Sea of Stars! The Final Fantasy Legends games or w/e on the Gameboy were the only SaGa games I really liked, so it’s good to see that style return.

The original “Final Fantasy Legend” was my my very first JRPG! I had NO IDEA what I was doing, but I had received the free Nintendo Power strategy guide for “FF1” on NES w/ my subscription but never got to play that. So I picked up its younger brother on GameBoy! Still have great memories of wandering around, feeding my monster character MEAT to see what it would transform into to! Will have to definitely check out “Secret of Varonis”!!!

the options of different ways to encounter enemies is such a unique addition! looks interesting for sure.

so the issue with the field encounters is that in the dungeons the enemies can just bump shoulders with you and you fight, while on the world map, they still kinda have to run into you.

Wow... 1 look at that black and white screen and I was sold. This looks like a Final Fantasy Legend 3 expansion pack. I loved that game so much growing up.

FF Legend was my first ever RPG in middle school and I think about it often! I recall making my own charts on what monsters turn into what on a notepad. I'm really excited about this and all the quality of life updates you went over. Thanks!

The entire video, up until you covered it, I was waiting for you to cover the battle system. So glad to hear about the casual mode, not a fan of the classic mode style. I have fond memories of Final Fantasy Legend III, none of Legend, and Legend II scarred me. I was just too young and dumb to figure a lot of things about it out. But this looks like a good trip down memory lane. Also, for me, my choice was either Game Boy, or a book on long trips as a kid.

Having played the Final Fantasy Legend games - I only played 3 on a cart, the other two I emulated - It's nice to see that someone made a fan game which is completely faithful to those games. ^_^

"Right on!!" Looks like they cherry picked all of the best aspects of the FFL trilogy and refined them into the kind of game I always wished Square had brought us! Like you, David, FFL has a special place in my heart; so I'm happy to be introduced to this game through your eyes.

The indie scene is killing it with the retro throwback games. In the same vein, Crystal project was also amaaazing…I would go so far as to say it ousted final fantasy 5 as my favorite “class/job” based system. Similar to the way chained echoes kind of dethroned some of the classics (same thing with hollow knight, honestly)

This game is amazing. I've already put 50 hours into it since release. It isn't just a fan game that copies the SaGa games, they definitely improved on the formula.

Sweet shirt! Also yeah I can relate to the road trip memories, family had an old school station wagon. Great for game boy worst spot for air conditioning. Also way too addictited to Unicorn Overlord, but I will be looking into this as some one who played the the game boy saga games.

This is one I’ll definitely have to try. I beat all the Final Fantasy Legend Games. And I definitely did the same. Our long summer trips, though from Florida up to family in New York, I entertained myself with my Game Boy and Final Fantasy Legend.

I love this game, I've been playing it non stop since Friday this last weekend. It is fantastic if you're someone who likes Final Fantasy Legend 1 and 2 for Gameboy. Edit: Devs in the discord are very helpful as well if you ever get stuck or want team building help.

Damn you David, I don't already get enough recommendations already that I have to get because they're spiritual successors. I wouldn't have known that trinity trigger was a spiritual successor to secret of mana without you, same with sea of stars with chrono trigger

It is! LOL, I normally just open the window for extra light when I record myself, then close them again once I'm done because I don't want sun damaged items either.

Looks like a wonderful game! I remember borrowing Legends from a family member when I was a kid and getting completely lost but loving it. Can tell this is a project made with lots of love and reverence.

My car gameboy game was Kirby's Dreamland. Sure the game only took 30 minutes to beat but I didn't care. lil me probably finished that game over 200 times. I don't think I was old enough to know what an RPG meant, of course that changed very quick when pokemon came out!

I'm amazed enough people remember the old SaGa games fondly enough to invest in this one, as they are very the definition of aging poorly. If you found the visible encounters too frequent here FFL1/2 are infinitely worse- some areas would hit you with battles every step. I enjoyed future SaGa games like SaGa Frontier more, though I always hoped a game would re-use the plot of FFL3 with better technology, as it's a crazy sci-fi mashup in the good way. Hell, they could mix some X-Men elements into it since part of the plot is that the contaminated Pureland water leaking into the human world is starting to make people and animals mutate, two of your party members starting out as mutants.

This game looks like the kind of game i'd play in a heartbeat and with the oldchool stuff being optional is a nice bonus. Though i wonder how the monster classes will be balanced as Monster classes have a history of being largely underwhelming and/or unreliable i the SaGa games that have them, Though you can get a powerful monster if you know what to do.

Sounds like a game that's not for me. I don't like games with no direction. I disliked it when final fantasy 5 and 6 reached the second half of the game where you basically had to search the whole world for things. No thanks. I prefer more linearity.
