I found cotton buds that are tiny. Like a toothpick with a tiny bit of cotton on. Theyre for microblading and also cleaning keyboards etc. Perfect for very small areas like in the eyes. They work amazingly with graphite and pastel

I have found that color shapers on pastelmat do not work with pastel pencils, but they work when you use extremely soft pastels and there is lots of creamy pigment to move around. I don't find them useful for blending, it's really more for shaping the colors (like their name says), pushing pigment around, reaching small corners, create painterly effects, and so on..

A couple of the ones you showed Jason, are really clay shapers. I've used them with sculpting clay miniatures. However, I've been using a product that body painters use a lot from Loew-Cornell Cone Style Stix. They are not rubber but a spongie like thingy. Comes in many shapes. My smallest cone .. shapes down to the taper to 2mm. You don't need a lot pressure and really blends like your finger. Here in the states at a store called Hobby Lobby has a set of 4 costs $8.99 (7.06 pounds I believe) so they are very inexpensive. You can also wash them off. Just throwing in my two cents..:)

Happy New Year!!! Jason, Love the informative tip. Just a thought here. Could you use the tip of the pan pastel triangular painting knife to do same thing? or does it smudge it too much like the colour shaper? Would the colour shaper work better on pastel paper? Collin Bradley uses them on Ingres paper. Love your tutorials.

@Dude-co7ni5 жыл бұрын
Fantastic video Mr. Morgan! I will try the stylus sometime in the future. Meanwhile, have you tried using Q-tips (ear swabs) to blend or smoothen pastels? I personally have used Q-tips on different paper types for blending pastel art, they blend well and also take off lesser amount of pastel color from paper when compared with finger blending. Any personal experience with regards to this?
@davydrds5 жыл бұрын
What an incredible work! Please ask me a question after I finish the work and I will frame with glass is it necessary to apply a varnish or not? I use Faber Castell Pitt Pastel. He was reluctant to apply the spray, as it darkens the pastel and leaves it slightly pigmented.

It looks almost... like some makeup applicators (??) And they do come in little pointy rubber points (eyeliner smudgers etc) and you can buy them in White and other colours. But this is great - I REALLY like... videos that are about different things to use to blend and yeah - the colour shapers won't make friends with me either! They look sooo good but I mainly use them for removing stuff rather than blending 😄

Thanks for the video, it was very informative. I noticed that the pastel goes on very smoothly on the paper with none of the paper showing through, is this due to the paper you are using, or are you perhaps pushing hard with the pencils?

I am a bit concerned that you recommend to use your finger to blend. Ever heard of dermal absorbtion over time from toxic elements within some pastels? Not an easily identifiable problem until late age. Cadmium in particular. Just an after thought. The archival soundness of your work may become affected and diminish its quality over time from the sweat within your finger tips.
