Yeah, I have done something similar. I took a Ryobi battery apart and then used a lab power supply to charge the cells until they had enough voltage so that the charger would recognize them. Then I fully charged the battery and even tested it to have 70% of its rated capacity. But after letting it sit charged for a few days, it was dead again. Repeated with same result. Likely there was too much cell degradation leading to the self-discharge rate to be very high. So this may work if the cells haven't been sitting too long or aren't too old. But I think it's likely the cells are going to die again soon thereafter.

I've done this trick also with a couple batteries with the same results. Take a charge fine but would be dead again the next day. when a battery craps itself, get a new one.

Yikes. Be VERY careful connecting two batteries like that... there could be enormous current flow between one that's charged and one that isn't. If you're lucky the battery has an internal thermal cutout that will stop you seeing your house on fire. Really if you insist on trying this, at least use a bench power supply instead so you can gently bring the pack up to a safe voltage for charging...

It works but the fix is only temporary.
@Underpar26
@Underpar26 10 күн бұрын
Yeah it's a temporary fix because what this means is the battery lithium is being allowed to go below the charging level deadness so you'll get a few more full charges out of it but once this starts happening it's done

You can do this also with Nimh batteries as well. I've done this to extend the useful life of some of my batteries. I think as long as they haven't been sitting around for a year like that, then they can still be useful.

When the voltage drops too low on a battery it won't charge because it's becoming unstable it's a safety mechanism doing this might get you by if it was a matter of the battery just sitting too long without a charge this will probably work but if it's really old it could become volatile if you do this. Definitely charge it in the middle of your garage lol. If you plan on storing your battery for long periods of time you should discharge it down to a certain level you might want to get a professional charger to start the charge on them as well because then you can keep them in really good shape and they will always work

I think I love you. :) However, do you have a way to do this when you don't have an identical battery? My lawnmower battery died, and naturally there was no replacement available, no doubt they want you to buy a new battery. The actual mower is in great condition and I don't want to toss it! Any ideas?

Interesting.. I only just found the 20/40 battery for all my aldi power tools today.. very hard to find.. soooooooo I was already wondering... is it possible to rig up a way to supply power to the cordless range via mains ?? Years ago I had a vhs vid camera that ran off a chargeable battery but it also cake with a simple plastic skinny piece that has terminals on and fitted and locked onto the camera too .. but had a mains plug on ... so when at home you could power it up and record things in the house ect and save your battery juice for outside away from power.... sooooo my quiery is... can you please show us how to rig something like that up for tools use. Or better yet.. could you make and market one.. I'd buy it
@Heizenberg32
@Heizenberg32 Ай бұрын
This can work for relatively low current devices. There are corded battery adapters for cordless power tool brands. They are mostly from 3rd party "use at your own risk" kind of manufacturers, but I believe there are some official ones too. But, for a lot of devices a powerful-enough AC to DC adapter is cost prohibitive.

@@Heizenberg32 oh. Thanks for the comment.. I knew I don't know enough about electricity to try rig something myself... I'd enjoy playing around with wires and soldering irons and molding plastic but I don't know what I'm doing and wouldn't enjoy blowing up all my power tools. I just don't understand why 'they' don't make a pluggable adapter .. especially for all these tools that come in RANGES and all have the same shape. I can dream..... anyhoo.. thanks and regards

Even easier if you have one of the old 18v chargers is buy the cheap Amazon 20v to 18v adapters and put it in the 18v charger for like 3 minutes. The old 18v charger doesn't care how low the voltage is and will bring it back up to the voltage needed to use the correct charger.

This is dangerous on several levels. Never do this. You run the risk of causing a fire. Lipoly cells below a specified voltage (from 2.7-3.2v depending) become internally and irreversibly damaged. Their internal resistance changes, they off-gas and they cannot hold the same charge as before. They get hotter when recharging, hotter when being used, and drain faster under use/storage. Also, directly connecting a full lipoly battery to an drained one is suicidal. Without protections 50+ amps can be transferred instantly heating both packs to dangerous levels. The DeWalt brand is somewhat reputable and there might be internal thermal cut-outs, but someone might try this 'one neat trick' with a less reputable brand and set their house on fire. This video should be pulled from KZfaq. This is stupidly dangerous and /should never be done/ (Ref: 10 years in the industrial lipoly sector.)

The lithium charger employs a safety mechanism that prevents it from starting the charging process if the power capacity drops below a certain limit. If you directly connect one working battery and one faulty battery, will the charger recognize the previously faulty one once again. This method "woke up" almost all my batteries in the past (e-scooters, drills, etc..). But be careful, you don't want to keep batteries connected together too long. A few seconds would be OK.
