I love this idea. Especially because when I can sing and play at the same time it’s a better performance. When I track each by itself it loses something. Thanks for this trick.

Great to see this manny. And old British producer named Hugh Jones taught me this very trick . He used a pig nose amp to do exactly the same thing . Pump a tone through it and he’d put it in the snare stand facing g upwards making g sure it was the same height as the snare skin and adjust the overheads in the same way to remove the tone virtually with the phase flipped . Similar with guitar amps and acoustic instruments . Great to see someone else use it too Loving this series mate . So many great tips and techniques from the old school way. I learned same as you in the late 80s early 90s on tape machines and consoles and making lots of coffee and lining up 456 and 499 tape reels on Studer machine 🤣😂🤘.

Oh man this video came just in time! I’m recording two acoustic songs this weekend. I’m stoked to give this a shot. I’ll be recording a banjo/ acoustic guitar duo in a month or so. I’m trying different room positions and treatments. I appreciate your years of experience

Hey Manny, that's a really good trick man. Save a bunch of time and have the artist confident in your abilities, when they hear the foldback mix with that mic set-up. Reminds me a little of a trick you once done with the clackers ( I think that was the name ) they used in the movies for phase. I still often think about trying to make something like that and have them remotely controllable. I like to tinker with some stuff. Do you think that could ever be built in to a mic and be able to adjust the phase via a remote function inside the mic? via software? Thanks alot Manny. Great watching your videos, gives lots of inspiration

Thanks sounds cool! I do have a cricket lol it’s a box that sends a beep and tells you in lights if speakers in phase or out! Super cool. Maybe I’ll share that too

sorry to sound like a boring tech, but wouldn't white noise be more appropriate as a test source? [as it covers a broader spectrum of tones]

Didn’t understand anything in this video. What is phase? Seems like this video was made for intermediate level recordists and not beginners like me. How do I apply this concept with my TEAC 144 4-track cassette recorder with no Neve, no Compressors, just a ribbon, a dynamic, an amp and a cassette? Can anyone explain a more simplified version?

My session only had the vocal mic and the guitar Mic which you can say would easily fit on a 4 track. Most computer systems, have a signal generator, which basically just makes a noise that you can check levels and if things are working, your 4 track doesn’t. I’m a little jealous of your set up because I know it’s gonna sound good 4 tracks rule and dont change a thing. Just keep on recording.🎉

@@mannysmiclocker so, in simple language you are saying that instead of miking the guitar like you would with the vocal, you instead plug the acoustic guitar into an amplifier and then mic the amplifier near its cone to record the acoustic guitar sound this way, instead? Is that what you are saying? I’m trying to wrap my head around the concept of what you’re trying to do. What is the concept of what you’re trying to do before you even get into the technical specifics? What are you gaining in doing it this way? What are you avoiding?

MrSeeker, he is just aligning wave lengths. In phase, or out of phase. Look up “phase” and learn in phase, and out of phase. Then look up “tone generator”. He is simply using amp as a “tone generator” to get signals “in phase” The explanation in video is for advanaced and even then confusing for sure.

@@MrSeeker42no for your set up you could add a app on your cell phone and run a signal generator thru a amp same place you be playing acoustic and place a vocal mic up and then place a mic where your guitar mic would be…. Then run sounds off app Thru a amp and …. It’s technical lol I’m not sure your analog set up would need because 4 tracks are cool and have a sound of their own. I’d pass on this technic as you already have a cool set up starting tape 🎉
