If you want to give your vocals that professional touch, try this parallel compression technique. It adds texture and thickness without overwhelming brightness.
Here’s how:
Send the vocal to a bus.
Apply compression with a fast attack and medium release, aiming for 5-10dB of gain reduction.
Use a low-cut EQ around 1kHz and boost with a bell curve at 12kHz.
Blend the processed vocal with the main vocal for a polished finished.

Multipass by Kilohearts, set the high band to taste, than use the Distortion plugin on that band. If it starts sounding harsh or piercing use the spread knob or add the Transient shaper on that band. Cheers.

Put the EQ first, then the compression. There is no reason for the compressor to work harder and for frequencies to compete for bandwidth if some of them are going to be cut anyway. Just put another EQ after, once you're done shaping the transients, so that you could finish polishing the sound you need.

Interesting that this is preferred over using a multiband compressor. This sounds very natural and the fact it's in parallel is helpful for mixdown purposes

If you put the eq before the compressor you will not have low frequency processed by the compressor, like sidechain-filtering. This lets you avoid phase issues that are commonly created by using fast attacks on compressors that work on elements with low end. Tipically you should use an attack that is greater than the first cycle of the fundamental frequency of the sound.

Nope, the compression control whatever you're boosting so it won't accentuate unwanted artifacts like noise when you were recording. Also, a bus (parallel processing) means you can blend the effects to taste.

To be honest, it really depends on how much your boosting or cutting on the compressor or EQ because whatever you put first is going to affect what happens next. If you put the compressor first, then whatever you boost on the EQ is still going to be more so compressed. If you put the EQ first and your boosting things it’s going to be at boosted level that’s gonna be harder to compress. At least that is the way I understand it.

it depends on the context. To my ears that is way too much eq treatment. The vocal loses all intimacy and sounds over sibilant. I rather make sure the space is in the mix than blast a hole in it.

@chromezify7182

@@Justauri-asdfghjklSimple exp: You create signals you can blend with each other and find a balance for. By sending the vocal to another bus you create two signals, one compressed and the other clea . Now you have the opportunity to compress and EQ without affecting the main vocal and being able to dial in the amount of EQ and compression you want present while also keeping the original body of the vocal.

"We need to ban software like this" - Ban compressors and EQs? Sure, good luck with that. You might as well shout "I hate music" while you're at it, since most recordings utilize compressors and EQs (and always have). "Bring back actual talent and dispose of autotune" - This isn't Auto-Tune. It isn't even remotely close to Auto-Tune. There could be any number of reasons why a recording isn't perfect, even if the performer performs perfectly.
