Sham ran easily 2 of the fastest ever times at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Just happened to come in second to the horse with the records at both tracks. Probably would have run a much more conservative Belmont against a different field, but then again, maybe it was just too far for him, especially after maximum effort put forth the previous two races.

The Belmont? It will NEVER be beaten not in a thousand years. A coupla horses have run it in 2.26. But 2:24 is still 10 LENGTHS FASTER! he would have beaten Justify by 20 lengths. Sham was solid, but the only horse that might have stood a slim chance against the great Secretariat in '73 would have been a winged Pegasus. Charge into the ages, Big Red, fly like the wind! God's perfect equine. That Kentucky Derby 50 years ago was a warmup for Secretariat's masterful sprint at the Preakness, only to be surpassed by Big Red's crushing dominance at Belmont. All three winning times are still each unbroken records 5 decades later. Runaway freight train still accelerating at the finish line - that was Secretariat!!

It's amazing that after 50 years of breeding race horses for speed and endurance, they still can't manage winning times to equal Secretariat 50 years ago. One thing that's been lost in the history is the sense of expectation before these races. Secretariat won Horse of the Year as a 2 year old, which never happens, so everyone knew he had the potential to be a wonder horse. It was incredibly satisfying to see him fulfill his potential in the best way possible. Each of his 3 Triple Crown races was won spectacularly in different ways. When another horse wins the Triple Crown while setting 3 new race records, then there will be a better horse than Secretariat.

American breeders are NOT breeding for endurance. Too many of the big American breeder outfits breed for big, good-looking yearlings to sell, rather than durable horses for the breeders to race themselves. In the 1970's there were a number of G1 dirt races at 1 1/2 miles, even a 2 mile race, the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Over the years, the 1 1/2 and longer races have disappeared; the Belmont is the only one left on dirt. Many other important races have had their distances shortened. So there's no real incentive to breed for stamina, the races don't exist here. Many or most of the most popular U.S. sires are more milers/distance horses, not the classics winners. Seems like a lot of the classics winners get sold off overseas, esp. to Japan. War Emblem and Sunday Silence and more recently California Chrome -- all Derby/Preakness winners -- have ended up in Japan. Derby winner Animal Kingdom, too. I am sure there are others.

Yes. Ron Turcotte said that out of the 3 Triple Crown Races, it was only in the Derby that he had to show Secretariat the crop, or use it, at all. And that was just at the end, when he drew even with Sham, to remind Red that they really did want to finish 1st. 😊 If ever there was a horse who ran for the pure love of it, that seemed to be Secretariat. How I wish we could’ve had the pleasure of watching run for a few more years. He was so gifted. Magical. Ah well. At least we have footage of him dashing about in his paddock at Claiborne.

Watching Secretariat run triggers deep seated emotional responses in people still today after 50 years. Why is he able to do that ? He triggers these emotions in the heart, and the soul more than just the brain, because when you watch him run it is glaringly obvious that he himself possessed a rare, and unusual amount of heart and soul.💧 Watching him run, still, after half a century, a lump in my throat, and a tear in my eye.
