Why should you feel guilty? Sewing is an art. Its theraputic and fun. Having lots of clothes to wear is bonus. I love your beautiful garments

A really lovely colection of tops. Don't feel guilty, its a hobby that gives you joy, and sewing is good for our mental health too. There is lots of pressure around over consumption at the moment which is important, but we need to balance this across our whole lives. There are other ways to cut down, food waste, travel etc, nothing wrong with enjoying your hobby.

I loved this video Sally! It was so enjoyable to see how you chose to pair which fabric with each pattern. I sometimes struggle too with how much fabric and patterns ( yikes I have a ridiculous number of patterns!) I've purchased over the past few years. Then I think, well it is my hobby and at least I can wear my hobby! Some hobbies like stamp or coin collecting, making plane or car models really doesn't produce anything a person can actually USE whereas I do use what I make by wearing it :) I've slowed down my sewing over the years and become much more mindful in my making; more basting, hand sewing hems, and just more precision which means my finishes are much nicer. Slower sewing has meant less consumption and more satisfaction in my final product.

Thank you! Yes that's so true and if sewing brings us joy and helps with our mental health then what's the harm I guess. I'm definitely trying to be more mindful about waste and overconsumption in other areas of my life too although I'm sure I could do better! Slow sewing is definitely a good thing, it's great to slow down and enjoy the process rather than just make, make make!! x

I think there is a vast difference between cheap consumer garments, that are bought with the intention of wearing once or twice and then throwing away and hand making. Hand made garments are worth every moment of the time and money invested.

This video has come at just the right time. Last summer I focused on shorts and over winter it was lounge wear for obvious reasons but recently I have noticed I don't have enough 'nice' tops to wear with jeans etc. I particularly love the Pivoine top and have already bought the pattern!

Thanks for the show and tell!! I recently (yesterday) emptied my closet and donated SO much!! If I’m not wearing it I figure why keep it. When it comes to my handmade items it was definitely harder! A few items I didn’t like even when I finished them but since I put so much time into them kept them. They have now left the building!

Totally understand what you mean, I sew cause it makes me happy and accomplished, I have just started using all my scraps now to make clothes for my granddaughter

Wow! Some fabulous makes 👍 I don't have a vast number of clothing items yet, but I do recognise that at some point I shall have made enough stuff for myself. My hope is then to indulge my dressmaking passion by making clothes for my grandchildren.

A great video again Sally and I totally got what you were saying about the amount of clothes you’ve made. They are all beautiful though and show how creative and skilled you are in what is as you say your hobby. Crafty sew and So have a very similar red fabric if not exactly the same

Loved all of your tops.With over consumption I think it's related more to rtw or buying for the sake of buying.Your hobby is sewing so your going to have more garments.Also you have a KZfaq channel and make for sewing companies,such as minerva,so your making more than you usually would.Unless you like sewing for others(which I dont as I know my own body),you will accumulate more.If you no longer want them you could always sell or donate.Either way just enjoy your hobby and let us,as subscribers,benefit.

Yes that's very true and I'm so much more considered now about what I buy from shops and what I'll actually wear and I'm trying to be more that way with my children's clothes too. Great video and amazing collection. I think we should definitely stop feeling guilty about things we do because we love doing them, there are already so many reasons to feel guilty... BTW Pivoine is pronounced "pivwan" with a "a" like in fashion :-) Delphine is a wonderful designer, a stylish and funny belgian woman based in Brussels. Just love her work!

You're right, Sally, we are all a bit nosey, but I find this sort of vlog so interesting and helpful. Since returning to sewing I have been stuck in a jersey groove, so seeing your lovely woven tops has inspired me to branch out and make some of my own. Really appreciate the time and effort it must take to produce this sort of vlog.

Really enjoyed your video. It's lovely to see your collection of tops. There's alot of inspiration & ideas there. It gives us beginner sewers a good idea how different fabrics work & look made into actual garments. Don't feel guilty about your collection. It's your hobby & it brings you joy. That has to be a good thing. It's only a waste if you didn't wear the things you make. X

Beautiful collection of tops so neatly sewn! Love them! Your comment about struggling with the number of items you have and you enjoy the process of pairing fabric and pattern and sew for the love of making rather than needing clothes, is something I whole heartedly agree with! Never heard anyone else say this but I am frequently expressing this to family and friends! I give away items to family and friends! My daughter says I have a door robe..... I have multiple hangers behind my door and hanging off the side of the wardrobe all full of clothes, tremendous guilt but each make is sewn with memories of the audio book I was listening to at the time! So yes totally get where you are coming from but I just can't stop sewing!!! 🤣🤣🤣

Wow. What a collection. Beautiful collection of versatile patterns. I have loads of patterns but have not made as many as you. Great inspiration. Don’t feel guilty about your hobby. You could be collecting camera equipment which you can’t wear and which is quite expensive 😂 You remind me of me when I started sewing…you’re using your patterns really well and you’re using cross pieces which is very clever and makes them unique. We’ll done!

Hi Sally, what a lot of great makes and information! Loved this vlog. 💕I made the Sudley dress, and one of my ‘Make Nine’ is to make it again as a top. I also just received the Avid Seamstress Blouse pattern, and that would really be my first blouse. I haven’t been sewing long, but already the items are adding up! I am more of a knitter, and I consider myself a Process Knitter rather than a Project Knitter. Sounds like that is what you are in sewing! If I don’t wear my knitting I give them away, but sometimes that isn’t easy! Looking forward to another vlog like this!❤️

Great vlog! Always good to see makes and hear about the fabrics used and any changes made to patterns, etc. V inspiring! Regarding your words about too many clothes and over consumption; making items to wear is far better than supporting the fast-fashion industry. If you make more than you need you can always give pieces away as gifts, donate some, or even consider selling some. I love to make myself new clothes. I'm tall and so happy that I don't have to wear short sleeves or trouser legs anymore! Plus, the number of times I used to shop for clothes and see things I liked but the colour wasn't good, or my size was out or there was something that didn't sit right... I'm not a fast sewist so only make a few pieces per season anyway ;)

Thank you! You’re absolutely right about not supporting fast fashion I’ll never go there again and am definitely thinking much more carefully about what I buy when I do! And yes again the amount of times I’ve given away something that has been badly fitted or the wrong fabric means it surely must be better to have a wardrobe of things I’ve made and love that fit well! I sew clothes I need and then also sew quilts, bags and other things so that I can enjoy my hobby and still make things that are useful.

Beautiful work Sally. I was so inspired I have already bought the Pivoine blouse, downloaded it and printed it! I have Atelier Brunette double gauze in my stash so I hope you don’t mind me copying you with the same fabric but different colour. I’m in Australia so we’re not likely to run into each other wearing them! We are back in lockdown here in Sydney so I’ll be cutting this out in the morning and sewing it up rather than being bored witless. I think I’ll also have a go at the Darling Ranges blouse … Thanks for helping to keep me sane!

Hi Sally! Thank you for this fantastic video, it was so inspiring! I spotted at least two patterns that I would like to try and it reminded me of two others that I've been having for a long time now and never got round to trying them! I've never been someone who has a lot of clothes and it doesn't really change since I started sewing because I let go of many RTW clothes. The only thing that multiplied a lot is dresses 😂😂 but I wear most of them regularly so it's ok. But I do wonder where the journey will be going with my knitting because since I started in February I finished 4 cardigans and the next is on the needles... 😇 I think I have to start knitting more involved items so I don't end up with hundreds of cardigans 😊 I'm very much looking forward to your dresses video 💕💕💕💕

Hi Kathi - thanks so much I'm really glad you found the video inspiring :). I find the same with knitting too but my knitting is much slower so I don't end up with quite so many garments there. I think it's a tough one but as others have said we find so much enjoyment in the making and could be spending lots on rtw clothes that get worn once and then thrown out! Thank you for watching xx

I have thoroughly enjoyed this video, I can’t see any problem with having a good selection of tops and the style is easy so they will never go out of fashion.My problem is in my mind I’m only in my 40s ( I wish) so I have to be careful about the style ,I find it difficult with the bottom half I tend to wear pants most of the time and sometimes getting a good fit and choosing the right material is a challenge.Just enjoy what you do and if you can afford it keep sewing, I love your tutorials.

Beautiful work! How does one go about making a keyhole neckline? It looks soo interesting and i would love it if u explain the main steps about making it!!

It's all explained in the pattern but basically it's a rounded opening (kind of shaped like a keyhole) which is either bias bound or finished with a facing or lining :) x

A great vlog, so lovely to see the different versions of the same pattern. I feel similar regarding how many garments i make ~ i get overwhelmed sometimes ~ how many clothes does a person need?? I do make a lot for other people as gifts too though now, so that lessons the strain a bit.

So fun and lovely. I think having a lot of clothes is a challenge, in terms of personal storage and ecological impact. I have the same concerns. But I think that these are hand made items, your craftwork, that display your ability to construct and create something and express personal style. It’s gratifying to look upon your accomplishments and see the tangible impact. If you like, you could always sell them as second hand pieces - they are one of a kind. I think if more people understood what went in to constructing garments, they would own less. So far, I have a larger fabric stash than I do finished garments… so I will cross this bridge when I come to it.

I loved this video Sally, thanks so much as I’ve definitely discovered 2 or 3 tops that I need/want, in particular the more basic ones (SOI silk tank & scout tee) as I don’t tend to buy those patterns but need those garments. You make such lovely garments. I also love Apolline patterns but think I’m putting the PDFs together wrongly as they keep coming up rather big. (Any tips). I feel very much the same as you about the number of things I make but as you say, I love sewing and it’s kept me sane this past 18 months. I make for my husband but not so keen on sewing for others as I get anxious they may not like or find fault but not want to tell me. I do struggle with the guilt but I like what someone has said about you can reduce consumption in other areas of your life and sewing and fabric buying is really my only ‘vice’ if you can call it that. And you bring pleasure and information to others through your makes and blogs. Btw, that red viscose- I bought that from Croft Mill but it was quite a while ago now so don’t know if they still have it. Keep the makes coming. 😀

Ah great I’m so pleased to have inspired you it’s amazing how many patterns there are out there that we still might not be aware of isn’t it! I’ve only ever made the cami top by Apolline patterns so far, it’s definitely on the larger side but I wondered if it was the style. I have a pair of shorts by her that I want to make too so when/if I ever get around to making them I’ll let you know haha. I’m the same I don’t like sewing for others either, way to stressful in terms of fitting etc. You’ve all made me feel a lot better in terms of having a lot of clothes - I’m definitely trying to be a lot better in other areas of life too. I also absolutely love the whole creative/making process and understand your discomfort about the volume of garments produced as a result. But, I do wonder if it's a guilt disproportionately felt by us sewists because we're making clothes. Do artists and other craftspeople experience similar worries, for example? Your clothes always look to be so beautifully sewn - I think you should view them as a fabulous collection and just enjoy them!

Thank you!! Yes that's very true. Yes I did buy some I had it for the True Bias Roscoe blouse but I've gone off of that pattern a little now, I might make another version of my frill collar blouse with it. It's a lovely fabric x

Love your tops so far. Just got to the sagebrush. Also lovey. Did you put a narrow hem in? I think the hem is supposed to be 4” (2 +2) double hem so it’s large for weight but should make it short?

Hello thank you!! My hem is about 4cm after chopping a lot off I think so probably not as wide as the pattern suggests maybe. I tend to make up the hem myself a little when I get to that stage and just go with what I feel looks best after trying on 😂 xx

Hi Sally, i need your help! I bought and washed some double gauze fabric, then I ironed it on low heat so that I don’t get rid of the lovely crinkle texture. Then I laid my fabric out and cut out my pattern pieces. However, I had a problem when I came to sewing the pieces together, I found some of my pattern pieces stretched and became much bigger than the actual paper pattern! The enlargement happened width-wise. E.g, my bodice is wider than what it should be. I need help!

I think that’s a common problem. Get your iron really hot and steamy and hover it over the pieces that have stretched it should make them shrink back in again a little - I hope that helps xx

Also, when you do gathered peplums in your sudley and Darling Ranges blouses, how do you hide the raw edge of the gather seam when you sew onto the bodice seam? I can’t leave mine raw and showing because I don’t own a serger, you see :) would love your tips and want to know what you did about this matter in your various versions!

I usually gather them, sew and then overlook the edges. If you were going to fully line you could enclose the raw edge between the bodice and lining and then hand sew down 😊 x

You could finish the raw edges with bias binding as long as it’s not a heavier weight fabric you’re using or it’ll end up too thick, failing that just zig zag the edges 😊

@@rhonddalesley yeah, I came across the binding idea just a few days ago. I always bias bind A LOT OF stuff but it never crossed my mind to bias bind a gathered edge. It’s clever and efficient. I will probably use a very fine and lightweight cotton to bind the gathers because my main fabric is too thick for it. The lighter the better! Thx for your kind input btw 😊

Are your sudley blouses lined? Or is it a large facing that i can see at 27:10

The blue one is fully lined as you would line the dress bodice according to the instructions, the other two are bias bound 😊 x
