I see so many ppl drop reviews on websites where they bought an axe from and they give it a negative review because “it came to me not razor sharp”. I’ve always automatically reprofiled any axe, hatchet, knife, spoon, spork, that I’ve gotten and I just assumed that’s what everyone did…I just feel like if you complain about having to sharpen a new axe and then trash a reputable manufacturer…you might be a man-baby 😑

Everything I buy is basically a “finish it yourself” kinda project. Everything needs to be setup, modified or finished. The only thing that doesn’t get modified are like t shirts.

Axe maintenance is therapeutic. It’s about the time of year I go ding them up. 😂 great video. Thanks

You just got me to thinking that cutter mattock I just used the other day could use a little tinder lovin care. Had to replace the handle on it several years ago and couldn't find one that fit it, so I had shape down a handle meant for something else. I'd better get to taking care of that handle so I don't have to do it again.

I actually prefer older saws. I have two. Neither are as old as yours but both are great saws. I have a Makita DCS6421. And a Shindiawa 757. Both older Japanese made saws.

Great video. I like the variety you chose. I'm fairly happy with the council tool axes from the past few years since I know what to expect for the price point. With 15-30min of tuning, they are great tools! I'd like to see how you go about making a handle octagonal, since the one I tried looks questionable at best.

Those GB’s are awesome. I also got much better sheaths for those and then used their original sheaths for other axes. Nice tips! Enjoyed seeing how someone else does it. :) Cheers!

Most of the finishes that I have experienced has been lacquer. I have scraped off that crap all too many times and put boiled linseed oil back on them. My log splitter I have repainted orange, so I can find it in the woods after I am finished using them. My splitting wedges are also painted blaze orange for the same reason.

You are indeed correct. On all Adler Axes, Hatchets and Mauls are a fine Layer of Clear (waterbased) coatings to prevent rust. These wear of with general use but it does keep maintenance to a minimum for a while. Nice Video! Cheers from germany

Great Video, Great Info. I have a few Axes and Tomahawks. I love my Council Tool Wood-Craft Camp Carver with a 22 inch straight handle. I usually use Linseed oil on the handles. I'd like to know what "snake juice" is?

Is that sanding belt like a gasket removal pad for a die grinder ? That's what I use for a touch up . Nice work !

I got the Council Tools Camp Carver with a 16 inch handle. It’s a fantastic hatchet, came ready to carve from the box. I’ve been putting linseed oil on the handle, it felt like it came raw, ready for treatment. Beautiful piece, made in the USA!

I've bought several hults bruk and grasfors handles. There a little thick but tough as steel. I'd like to see a video on making one octagonal.

just as a FYI, Westcoast Saws just had some custom Hickory axe handles made this year, and they are selling them with the wood wedge and a couple of small stainless steel wedges, and the left the end that fits into the eyelet large, so it would accommodate different axe heads. Looks like it would be a nice fix for the one axe at 10:47 in the video. Looks like a nicely forged axe head.

Next project is an old fireman's axe that i plan on putting a mirror on. Im fairly new at the restoration process, just wondering if you have recommendations on different types of wood for hamdles with varying amounts of curve? Just did this on a Prandi splitting wedge axe. I was “meh” on the handle with the factory finish. Now I’m far more happy until it revealed a crack in the base of the handle. Still, great method and it increased my overall satisfaction with the tool.

I've seen guys put a piece of thick leather in that spot where you said you had an overstrike. I think I saw one of your nicer axes actually came that way. I think the best of us will miss, and it's a good way to protect the axe against damage.

I need some advice. I have a snow and nealley 3.5 pound felling axe. the handle came loose first usage. so I jumped the bit tighter to shoulder of handle and tried to put a step wedge in. problem is they wedged this handle with an aluminum wedge instead of a wooden one. I didn't see that immediately because the wedged area is painted black. anyhow, I need to get that damned aluminum wedge out so I can remove bit, re fit the handle, and re haft the axe. I tried to drill into the wedge to secure a screw to help pull the wedge out. unsuccessful. that wedge is really in there. maybe I moved it a half a mm out outside of trashing the handle....how do I get that aluminum wedge out?????

Shame i am too too far away from the Good USA, here in the Uk, we really dont have good quality axes, maybe from gillpin old axes which is too thin , hardly and felling axes as you do in the States. man i would have bought a few, or when one goes to thees garage sales or flea Markets for axes, knives, guns, tools etc, in your Country. My i asked what is SNAKE JUICE , is that one of your special concoctions you put together for your axe handle. i have two Gransfors bruks axes, a original Gransfors Mini Hatchet and a Gransfors small forest axe, when they were made famous over here in the Uk, By Ray Mears and they were then £50 each now they are over 3 to 4 times the price only over 20 years.. you are truly a gifted man, who knows what you are talking about. keep up the good work. cheers Hans. ,

"don't freak out . You're not gonna die..." Yeah it is a lot of work , but It's a "quiet tool". Ever tried the method of 50/50 turpentine and BLO and you soak the whole handle in a bucket? A gardener guy said it wiil travel up the handle by osmosis. I thought that was the coolest thing ever. Love that splitter , now I want one.

i recently bought my first GB Small Forest Axe... and unfortunately, the bit is angled in. I tried to email GB directly...with no response. The US based company i purchased it from is requiring me to mail it back in (paying out of pocket) and they will mail me another one... with no guarantee that i will get a better one.

Sensible and informative. A shame Gransfors is pulling back on what was once a stringent level of quality control. I do find it somewhat odd that anyone would purchase a new axe when there are literally tens of thousands of better, used items to be had. From a sustainability perspective, making new axes is anything but a tad unnecessary. On the coating front, another lesser known finish used by old pro timber cutters was the use of used diesel oil on the haft... This process leaves the grain sealed with a black tar-like finish that is hands down the best preserver Ive seen. Over many years of collecting, I aquired 2 particular axes that belonged to a professional cutter back in the 1960's... What was most interesting was that I aquired them nearly 6 years apart - Both of them are Swedish made Tasmanian patterns on beautifully preserved diesel oiled hafts.

For a third or less than the price you paid for that gransfors, you could have gotten a council tool Dayton axe with a much higher build quality, and you would be supporting an American company. For a $300 axe, I’d expect WAY MORE than what gransfors offers. They’re nice axes, but nowhere near with the price they charge.

Why the 100 db intro music, and then 65 db audio?

A company is going to charge the maximum they think they will get away with. Seldom has anything to do with quality or manufacturing costs.
