Secrets of the Jaguar XK8 XKR and X100, is a series of short films each sharing one or two of the cars quirks features and idiosyncratic design. This is episode 101. I am very grateful to Derek Beaumont for allowing me to film this secret using his Blue 2001 xk8 coupe called 'the cat'.

Don't need to pull back twice, just hold the joystick back, that's how it works on my XKR.

Thanks Udo. I dont know what percentage of XK8s and R's have it fitted. I would guess more than 50%🤔 Maybe we need to find out

Hi John It was great to see you presenting the picture to Derek. I would just add to your episode that if you place the car in reverse, then push the mirror selector to the left and push back on the mirror adjustor joystick the left mirror will drop so you can see the kerb. When you take the car out of reverse the mirror goes back to the original position. Another great secret. Keep up the good work.

I think this is only if you have memory feature on mirrors, seats and steering column…

Hi Eric Hi Hunty. Yes we did try this on Dereks as well but im unaware of it being available on cars without the Memory seat function. I could be wrong though! I often am😁

I've just "discovered" your series, as though I bought my wife her XK8 20 years ago on eBay, she never really got to drive it much. We've just moved to the mountains,, FAR AWAY from my Jaguar mechanic, and so I'll need to learn to repair and maintain myself...YOUR Series has already helped me with one minor repair, saving me hundreds. (I need to find the episode on exhaust's because her Jag's exhaust is just not knarly enough for me).

@@ToTheGarage 2003 so it's just a 4.2 it's in decent nick but very much at the cheaper end of the spectrum. Done a couple of hundred miles in it already and loving it. Thanks for all the info on your channel.

Also, if you put your car in reverse, select left mirror and pull back, the left mirror drops down so you can see the kerb when parking.

John you’re right this is a hidden feature, unless you have the handbook and know that your car has them fitted. In there it says pull back once to fold or unfold, but you have to leave 6(?) seconds after pulling to reverse the operation. Elderly cars apparently need a bit of time to think 😁

It may be due to the age and condition of the switchgear that the two cars I have tried this on needed a couple of flicks to get it going🤔 Or maybe there was an update to the software or its a dealer programable command?

I was aware of this & use mine often when parking. Don't forget to open the mirrors when getting back into the car, once the vehicle is moving, the folding mirrors will no longer operate.

HI John, The X150 is similar in that you would not know that the mirrors fold. On that car you press the two L/R buttons together to make them fold

When I painted mine last year I pulled the mirrors off. Only 2 wires running into it for the defrost so I knew it wasn't power folding. Otherwise I'd still wonder!

Another secret about the folding mirrors is that if you spray too much WD-40 in them to free up the movement, the motor takes the mirrors past the stop position pointing them forward!!! I believe that there is a sort of friction clutch that should overload the motor when the mirror reaches its correct position turning the motor off.

@@ToTheGarage I should resist. I now have to put some string around the passengers mirror so I can add resistance at the correct moment, and at the same time hold the drivers mirror!! Perhaps a good spray of brake cleaner in the clutch area will make them behave properly again. 🤞🤞🤞

How can you not know how your car works ? Only joking it took me 3 years of spilling screen wash to know that the filler neck extended on my X330, to be fare, when I posted "why didnt anyone tell me this?" on Jaguars owners club several people rushed out to their cars as they didnt know either lol ..

I find it fascinating that some of the switchgear in these cars (which started at around £48k new!) were so lacking, or sparsely labelled one might say. I only found out by accident that mine did this when I was adjusting the mirrors.

Hey John, I was wondering if you'd do a guide on how to install the aftermarket grilles for the XK8.

Hi Cody. I do have an aftermarket grill for mine but have never installed it. I wanted it for the rarity value rather than displeasure with my current look (machined solid aluminium item) I will however be doing a video on removing the nose cone, which is the biggest issue for those wishing to install some of the grills available.

My ‘03 car has them. Some people are saying hold the little joystick back for 4 secs to operate them so I’m not sure which is correct.

Any ideas my xkr blue tooth connects but who ever I phone they can't hear me but I can hear them. Any remedies?

No need for two flicks. Mine works on the first. Mine wasn't born with it. But I bought mirrors with 12 cables - those are the ones that is foladable and even dimmable.

Gets expensive when they go wrong you have to replace the seat module now costing £200+ second hand 🙁

Only if specced as a factory option I think. Options were manual mirrors, powerfold and powerfold with auto-dimming. They had different wiring from new

hi Jon many thanks for videos i wonder if you or any of your many subscribers can help. i own a 2003 xk8 convertible which has just failed the MOT one issue being the rear fog lights which are housed in a console switch module non levelling h/light model with the heated seat mode this part sits between heater and radio. is there anyone outhere why might know a source for said part main dealers no help so i trying ebay part no is c2n2444 many thanks Tony
