Hello John; I've had my XKR since early 2003 (4.2L) and just discovered your "Secrets" series. I love it ! Just to add to the window issue addressed in this video: I had a circuit breaker installed on my car as I don't drive it every day. Obviously, when the battery is disconnected, the windows freeze and when reconnecting, the driver window is in the position it was in when the battery was disconnected, resulting in the upper part of the window damaging the roof rubber lining if one does not leave room when closing the door. The trick here is, before disconnecting the battery, to open the driver's door (window drops a bit), stay in the car and bend over and push the inside door lock of the passenger side until it clicks 5 times. The passenger door is then locked. Then get out of the car, leave the driver's door open, go to your trunck (boot in UK) and disconnect the battery via the circuit breaker. Then, close the driver's door and lock with your key. The window is thus in its "open door position" and will cause no harm when you reconnect the battery and open the door...

I had the window height issue due to a flat battery but your video cured that for me. Using a Mondeo window switch (Mk 1 or 2) is another great tip, but I don’t know how to change the window switch; a double on the driver’s side (assume same process for single on the near side). Perhaps you could do one of your videos on how to do it: I’m sure I’m not alone with this in the XK8 community. Many thanks thus far.

The xk is a bit of a handful to keep up together. Some might say to clever for its own good ! I had a brand new XK8 convertible in 2004 with 20" 2 part wheels and grey wood dash + sat nav etc. A real head turner. Only problem was head room as I am long torso'd my head was always in the roof. Unless I declined the seat which made if uncomfortable after 15mins. I kept it only 5 months and sold it. I loved it but I could not drive like a tortoise for ever. Love your channel John. Hi Kit Kat. If they are memory mirrors then the memories will need to be re taught. The other feature of the control via joystick should be fine. I would suspect a dirty/dodgy joystick if you are getting intermittent/ irrational movement.

These cars can suffer random electrical issues as they get older and folk spend a lot of time and money tracking down 'ghosts' in the machine. One tip I would give is go through all the earth points annually, espescially in the convertibles, unscrew the nut, remove the loop connectors and clean with a bronze wire brush inc the threaded studs. Dont just spray them with electrical cleaner but actually mechanically clean them and finish with a spray of cleaner, rebuild and tighten the nuts. It is amazing how many 'ghosts' I've seen exercised like this. It was supposed to be a service item but seems to have been left of jaguar service sheets. The Jaguar electrical manual shows clearly where they are. and most are easy enought to get to. One final thing and I do this on mine includeing current XK8 convertible. Swap out coolant for EVANS waterless or similar I consider it a must. Evans developed the coolant using XK's as test vehicles and it is perfect for them. In older engines the original coolant will cause you problems with burst hoses and leaks.

That window thing was on the Chrysler Sebring convertibles in the mid '90's. It allows for a really tight fit. No leaks or wind noise. Going down a bit saves the weather strip, the window won't break. Never heard of window reset for any car.

Thanks for another one. Couldn’t find the paint defect in my 2005, but I do have a little plastic connector that holds the filler cap and prevents me from losing it. Unfortunately that bit of plastic is not as flexible as it probably should be, so the magnet is not strong enough to hold it in place. Maybe I can replace them with a pair of stronger rare earth magnets.

Another cheeky trick is set the electric mirror selector to the center position, not selecting either, and push back on the direction panel and it will fold back your mirrors, push forwards to get them back out. I didn't know I had this feature on my car until I tried it.

I think the paint defect may have occurred at the time that the cars were painted. That's when the paint was still wet and the metallic Parts in the paint would migrate to the magnetic force affecting them.

Yeah setting the windows is easy but aligning the windows to the frame, hood and quarter light can be tricky to avoid wind noise and water leaks, there are a few adjusters inside the door. Also makes sure the fuel drain tube is not blocked, from underneath.

I'm not sure if you'd be able to help, but my drivers seat already had none of the buttons working, even though everything underneath appears to be connected. Now all of a sudden the seat automatically moved itself foward and the back of the seat went foward so you are leaning foward against the steering wheel if you try to sit in it. I figured I'd replace the seat, but the bolts are covered due to the fact the seat is pushed forward. The fuse for the drivers seat tested good. What should I do?
@ToTheGarage3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you have seat memory functions specified on your car. Try pressing buttons 1 or 2 around the door handle. One may move the seat a more convenient position to aid removal. Secondly, I did a video or two on how to remove a stuck seat that has covered up its mounting bolts. Here is a link. part 1 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ac-XraxqypqteZc.html part 2 kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9B2nKmI0afThac.html

John - many thanks - what if your window won't move at all when you work the switch and stuck in the top position? You mention the battery. I keep mine on a C-Tek trickle charger through the winter. John, Great information. I am looking to buy a XK8. Is there anyway to have the hydraulic system in the top inspected?
@ToTheGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert. Short of taking it to a hydraulics firm for a pressure test I am unaware of a specific test you could do. There are two issues that primarily affect the roof. (many others will, of course, be possible) The big one is that the hydraulic lines can fail/push themselves off their unions. This happens most commonly in the hood latch mechanism in the top of the windscreen frame. Its a known fault but is not very common in UK or similar climates. It tends to be associated with cars that have been baked in the sun for years and the heat has done its worst on the hoses in this very hot spot. Check around the interior mirror interior lights and headlining in this area for any signs of current or previous Oil. The 2nd is the Oil in the pump reservoir itself. Early cars had issues with the oill congealing (I think up to 2003?) This can either cause the hood latch to jamb up or the pump to work harder than intended and keep blowing fuses. The oil used later was a better grade and no issue. If you do get an earlier car then it might be worth putting a hood oil change on the to-do list. Just ensure that you run the roof through a couple of cycles. before you buy. About 15 seconds to operate is quite normal as is a delay of about 3 seconds after depressing the button before anything much happens. Normal operation is very quiet indeed and almost inaudible on my car if the engine is running The majority of owners though will have no issues with their hood. It is certainly one of the highest quality automated soft tops that has been used on a mainstream car. Enjoy the search and I hope you enjoy your eventual purchase. John

Interesting video's 👍I like the soft top tip Regards Mac.
@ToTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mac. has the impact sensor been tripped or has got corroded terminals? Its in the left hand end of the dashboard. The black rubber top is the reset. I would assume you are using a genuine Jaguar black key with a transponder chip inside it and that it has worked previously. Has someone tried to steal it? If so has the horn been disconnected and so the 'inteligent Sounder' (Rechargable seperate alarm system) may be constantly trying to recharge its damaged batteries causing your drain. Try disconnecting its multi plug. Its behind the front right wheelarch liner beneath the headlight. Having said all that. I know you said you have checked all your relays but it sounds like a stuck relay to me. John

Hi John, I've watched the item on the window reset memory, however my problem still persists. Upon on door open, the window drops as it should, but when handle is released it returns to closed position whilst the door is still open (this only happens on drivers door to UK/RHD 2005/55 XKR). I have been told the latch needs replacing, is this something you can advise on please? Thanks in anticipation, Rob
@ToTheGarage4 жыл бұрын
Not heard of the glass going up again when the door is open. The latch sounds possible in that the position of the door latch tells the car windows that the door is open or closed. If you move the latch in the back edge of your door with your finger, does the window drop a little when you lift it? if so it could be just a tired latch spring that cant hold the latch up in the open position on its own?

Congrats on your purchase!👍 Has the rear quarter window been replaced and not sealed well? Check the glass brand matches the other windows. Do the window memory re teach process in case they are not winding into the upper seal fully or the seal has shrunk.. AS long as you can buy a fob of the right era you should be fine to program it yourself (as long as the one you buy works obviously.

How do I fix ASC/TRAC not available light?
@ToTheGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hi Louie. Not a quick or complete solution im afraid but probably enough to allow you to search elsewhere on the web for help and vids. Start by cleaning your ABS sensors. Easy to remove, 10mm bolt a nd an electrical connector. one on each hub. They should look through a hole in your hub and watch the castelated sensor ring going past. Clean them up, and test them. Put a multimeter on the most sensitive range connect to their multi plug. Wave a magnet past the sensor fast and close and the meter should twitch. If not replace them. and try the car again after you have done a hard reset (remove Battery fir 10 minutes at least.) If that does not work its the ABS actuator or its control module. The Module is known to fail because of two dry soldered joints. Its a sealed unit , but with care you can cut a hole in its cover and re solder them. Search jag forums on this for where to cut and what to solder. Told you it was not an easy or quick answer. But it is an answer and it it is fixable! This problem often comes and goes with the hot weather. if it does then that will be the bad soldered joint

@ToTheGarage5 жыл бұрын
Hi John. No, The window will wind down by 10mm when you lift the handle even if the memory is gone. it just won't necessarily go all the way back up again until you reset the memory but as you have now seen its the work of moments when you know how. Actually, if you ever go to view an xk8 from a general car lot you can almost guarantee the memory will have been lost when they let the battery get too low or disconnected it. Then you can just keep lifting the door handle and say. 'This had better be real cheap because the electrics are fried!'🤣
