In an almost untouched corner of North East Asia, 3200 metres above sea level on the Tibetan plateau, lies the largest lake in China; Qinghai Hu - also known in Tibetan and Mongolian language as "The Blue Lake."
The lake is in particular sacred to the Tibetans inhabiting these remote altitudes, and they see it as their religious call to protect the local environment.
In the first episode of the series "Lakes on the Roof of the World,"
we travel to hidden islands, where foreigners reportedly never set foot before. We meet the Tibetan nomads, whose traditional lifestyle is challenged by the Chinese government; the Buddhist nuns of the secluded Lotus Monastery; and a 'Dragon's head lute' player passing on his ancient musical heritage.
From the series "Lakes on the Roof of the World."
TRACKS publishes unique, unexpected and untold stories from across the world every week.

@@robertmetzger6467 no, by Qinghainese i mean all ethnic groups in Qinghia be it, amdonese, hui Muslims, mongols or Han. Since the Lhasa based Tibetan empire expanded into Qinghai and conquered the native Qinghainese of the Tuyuhun kingdom, Qinghai has never come directly under the control of any government based in Lhasa since that empire collapsed. the so called dalai lama that came from Qinghai never spoke tibetan as his native language but a local dialect amongst the multitude spoken by the native Qinghainese.

Being born and lived for 36 years in Cuba I know by first hand what a totalitarian government is. My love and respect for the people of Tibet whose beautiful culture based in love and compassion has been destroyed by the greatest calamity known by humanity. The communism.

A lake is a lake. There are no holy or sacred lakes. Only some hold a sentimental or nostalgic attachment by some people. That is all. So weary of hearing people refer to things as being sacred this and sacred that. It is nauseating.
