You have found a fine tree that is so full of beautiful fruit Wendi! One thing about our older generations, not only their set ways, but more so the Wisdom that they share. Great story and resourcefulness by your Uncle of how he nurtures his plants. No wonder the fruit are so plentiful. Never thought of using a plant's peel as a source of direct hair nutrition. But is seems to work for your beautiful hair! Are your plants handling the stormy weather down there ok? -Bob...

So much wisdom and very humble! Hopefully I can share more of his knowledge and garden in the future. I actually haven't tried pomelo peel to wash hair, but I heard people swear by it in Vietnam. :D Some plants didn't make it from the rain and hail when I was away. Lots to catch up in the garden! Hope you are doing well Bob!

Oh, I love this Uncle's method because it reflects my own method of composting fertilizing my fruit trees. I just put every kitchen scrap spred around trees and it composts itself and builds soil. I don't even bother burying it. And till now I have wonderful result. I am lazy gardener and like using easy method working with nature.

Hello lady, if you are in cold climate, plant pomelo in large grow bag. Fertilizer adequately and often with organic compost and manure. In cold weather bring it inside house and keep it near widow. It will give fruit 5 months of year from June to August.... Wish luck to you and happy eating to your baby son.

I get the whole spongy texture way more now than before. I got a ponkan mandarin tree last year and just had the first of them yesterday. It was delicious, a bit more mild than a murcott tangerine, less acidic than them and an orange. I'm told the Chinese give them for good luck on their new year. I'm curious, do you get leaf miners over there in Cali? I have still yet to find a good way to keep them away from my citrus plants, especially my lemons. I've tried the pheromone traps, but they only get some of them.
@wendiland
@wendiland Жыл бұрын
I'll have to ask what pomelo symbolizes in buddhism. Pomelo leaves are used for removing bad energy. We like decorating with gold/yellow and red colors during Lunar new year. I didn't pay attention to their tree, but my Calamansi citrus gets leaf miners. It's very common in CA.

okay so in summary of fertilization: epson regularly. when flowering begins, alternate between compost with sugar cane(?) pieces and bone meal? Lastly thin the fruit off the tree to keep the biggest. What a cool gardener and great tips! Thanks Wendi... p.s. the Pomelo hat/wig looks good on you :)
@wendiland

Those were just ornamental plant leaves. He was just composting any leaves/plants he didn't want (nothing specific). Lol His method is pretty simple, just takes some effort. He's a cool guy, wish I could squat and sit with him al day. PS. When I can get my hands on a giant pomelo, I'll have yellow hair for a day! :D

@@SkylarHayes Plant based hair dye? That would be cool! Didn't get a chance to ask about guava, but he does use composted leaves mixed with chicken manure on all fruit trees. He did mentioned feeding guava with epsom salt regularly. His guavas are the best I've ever had, and I've had many. Haha!

I think the fastest way to get a pommel to fruit is to get a air layered tree instead, for faster fruiting. But this variety is called "Quang Chau is very exclusive, it took me nearly a decade to track one down. Best of Luck my friend. 😁

Sad for me to say but true, I've never tasted a Pomelo and I first learned and saw this GIGANTIC fruit from Paul on his channel, 'lifeinthailand', Paul had the pink colored variety, round and yes he also stated the fruit is mainly sweet, maybe a little acidic tang, but more sweet being the norm. From a Ruby red Grapefruit I planted a seed, it sprouted, grew and is now a tree about the size as this Pomelo, the fruit is very sour, lol 😂good thing I love sour, but the fruit is actually a yellow grapefruit, so I'm assuming that ruby reds are grafted to make them less sour and bitter. As for the pithe, I used to throw that away, not anymore, thanks to emmymadeinjapan, now emmymade here on KZfaq, she told us the sad story of Cubans living during the Great Depression, having scant resources and food at that time, they made grapefruit pithe schnitzels, so I tried that with the pithe and gotta say just as GOOD as the chicken schnitzels if not better.Thanks for sharing the wisdom and knowledge of Uncle Jim, 👍, sorry for the long comment and greetings👋from central Mexico. 😊
