Are you looking to perfect or perform your first 360° spin?
The threesixty is a fundamental part of bodyboarding and for many the first manoeuvre they will learn. Although a basic manoeuvre it can also be more difficult and advanced when performed in a critical section of a wave. They can also be essential to combination riding when stringing together various manoeuvres across a single wave.
We have broken down the steps to performing your first 360° spin as well as how to refine your spins if they are already part of your repertoire.
1. Speed - Like all manoeuvres, speed plays a critical role in being able to complete a threesxity. In this instance control of speed is more important than travelling fast. To much speed can make the move more difficult and potentially send you off the back of the wave. Not enough speed can make your spinner look lame.
2. Release the rail - Once you are travelling across the wave having gained speed, the first thing to do is release your rail. This is done by disengaging your inside rail and flattening the board.
3. Direction - Now you have released your rail you need to start going in the direction of the spin. To achieve this you need to put your weight onto the inside rail, throw your head over your shoulder into the direction you wish to travel. At this point the rotation will start and the spin will begin.
4. Cross your legs - As the rotation starts you need to lift and cross your legs up behind you whilst arching your back. This will centralise your weight to the middle of the board and like a spinning top create a centre point to your spin. It is also important to cross your legs from a style point of view. The tighter those legs are crossed and the closer to your butt the more stylish the spin will be.
5. Look through the spin - As mentioned above, it is important to point your head in the direction you wish to travel. Your head is the heaviest part of your body and wherever you point it your body will naturally follow. By looking over your shoulder you will spin faster and with more control.
6. Drop your legs - As you come around to the 360° point of your spin you need to return to travelling in the direction you was already going. By simply dropping your legs you will stop the spinning process and return to the trim position to carry on riding the wave.
7. Re-entry / Bottom turn - Depending on what kind of section you have performed your spin on determines how you will ride it out. If on a steep section you will need to put your weight back to the rear of your board to prevent a nose dive. On a flatter section you may need to bottom turn and lunge forward to regain momentum.
Once you have nailed your spins you will be able to refine them on various sections of the wave. By using them to link other manoeuvres and sections of a wave, you will now be in a position to enter competitions and even impress onlookers with your skills.

Don't you already play with your body positioning on waves to generate speed? This is the same thing you just have to find the center of your board.🤙

As someone fairly new to the sport what session would you recommend at the wave? I have been bodyboarding about 6 months in the sea but haven’t been to the wave yet and I’m a bit nervous to jump in on a session and make a Wally of myself haha. Great video guys!

Hi, we are actually taking a trip to the Wave as part of our Cornwall Retreat week, you can come for the whole week or just the day at the Wave, it's the best way to learn and hang with a group of like minded people, please take a look at bodyboard-holidays.com/destinations/united-kingdom/cornwall-retreat/

Hey Chris, I took up the sport a few years ago. But being at rhe mercy of the swell/wind gods whenever we visit the SW I have gotten very little consistent practice in. Can count the amount of decent rides I've had in the 2 years on my hands 😄. I've been out in, and was fairly comfortable in 6ft faces but just lacked the experience in the surf to always be in the right spot. I've booked the Wave for 2 sessions (same day) in September, they are both intermediate sessions as it will give me 2 solid hours of practice in manageable size waves to really make sure ive nailed down the fundamentals. Like you I uhmed and aahd over plucking for a bigger wave, but decided the objective of the day, like I said, is to get 2 solid hours of constant practice that I haven't been able to achieve in all my visits to the beach over the last few years. This hopefully then sets me up for a good winter, am also keen to get on one of bodyboard-holidays weekenders in October. And remember you can always go back to the wave and go for a bit bigger session next time.

How do you avoid or stretch to avoid cramps when you cross your feet against your rear end?
@bodyboard_holidays
@bodyboard_holidays Жыл бұрын
It can be one of those practice makes perfect scenarios. The more you put your body through a movement the easier it becomes in time. We call this muscle memory. It could also be related to hydration and nutrition. We would recommend stretches relevant to where experience the cramps and to make sure you are hydrated with plenty of potassium, calcium and magnesium in your diet. Thanks for reaching out to us and please let us know if you have any other questions. 👌

Is it harder to do spins if your bodyboard has deep channels? Thx!

That's an interesting question. We've not noticed any difference and we find that in certain such as the cutback reverse spin they are actually beneficial.

I notice they are holding one leg in the water longer then pulling it up to cross the feet at your bum. Does this help you spin better or does it do nothing?
@bodyboard_holidays
@bodyboard_holidays 10 ай бұрын
The leg trailing in the water when trimming before the spin is a continuation of the rail of the board. This leg is helping the riders keep locked in to the face of the wave and draw a line across the wave. When initiating a spin this leg needs to be released from the face of the wave as well as the rail of the board for the spin to start. We will get a video made explaining this very soon. 👌
