Racing in the wet is one of the biggest challenges a driver will face, and one that as fans, we all love to watch. It’s the great leveller of machinery and the moment when great F1 drivers can outshine their cars, showing off their incredible feel and car control.
Think Schumacher in Spain in '96, Hamilton at Silverstone in '08, Senna at Monaco in '84, Senna at Donington in '93 or, Senna any time it happened to rain. Or, as it happens, any other time.
Today, I’m going to explain why racing in the wet is such a challenge and the techniques great F1 drivers use - to extract the most from their machinery in rainy conditions.

In F1 it seems that the best drivers come to the front in the wet, but in MotoGP it seems that the best wet weather riders are not necessarily the best riders. Yes, wet weather will change the order up and slow bikes and teams can suddenly find themselves in the lead, but it's interesting that the same riders always go well in the wet regardless of which team they are riding, but those same riders aren't always the best. Jack Miller is the best current wet weather rider in MotoGP, but in the dry he is well beaten even by team mates on the same bike. Chris Vermulen was similar in the 2000's. Conversely, one of the best riders, Jorge Lorenzo, is terrible in the wet even though he consistently outperformed Rossi as a team mate in the dry. The likes of Marc Marquez and Rossi aren't exactly rain masters either (although much better than Lorenzo). Good wet weather rider doesn't mean good dry weather rider. But in F1 the two seem to line up more.
@voongnz
@voongnz 3 жыл бұрын
That's because in F1 there is more of a constructors performance gap, and when it rains, it is an equalizer for the drivers as they can't push their respective cars to the limit. So skill is a more important contributor in wet races. In motopg/wsb etc riding style will show it's advantages/disadvantages depending on the conditions.

Jim Clark won in 1963 at a very rainy Spa-Francorchamps (14.1 km layout). He started in P8 and passed all cars ahead of him and finished in P1 almost 5 min ahead of Bruce McLaren in P2. If there is a better performance in the rain (with great respect to Senna and Hamilton), I cannot tell what it would be.

I had my first race weekend ever and it was in the rain... well practice was in the wet and quali was on a half wet, half dry track and i found it tricky to understand the grip and the conditions. I watched this before hand because i knew the weather and i know the fundamentals but in practice it is so much harder than i ever couldve thought. i have no karting experience really, and certainly not in the wet being from Las Vegas. It is supposedly going to rain in New Orleans in my second race weekend and i want to be prepared, this certainly helps a bit more with understanding the line i can and should experiment with when its wet on track.

This is a good explanation except for one detail. The rubber on line is one thing that decreases grip but track surface texture is the major reason there's more grip off line. Rubber is a great polisher, it smooths any surface over time. Off line there are still areas where the small rocks in the asphalt are still sharp, haven't been rounded by the tires. Deformation, the keying of tread rubber into the track texture is the major portion of grip. Adhesion contributes less to total grip and it goes away completely in the wet.
@davissi
@davissi 6 жыл бұрын
You need to focus on the wider line using less lock therefore less change of direction forces. A large radius enables more speed to be carried in the wet or the dry, the difference being in the dry the cars usually have enough grip to take the tighter line with full grip. As soon as the grip levels are compromised you're better off staying wider to be able to carry more speed throughout the corner having a higher minimum speed. I remember Michael Schumacher explaining this even when the grip is compromised in the dry he would use this technique. The more lock you put in the more likely you will understeer or not be able to hold the line.
@chylld
@chylld 6 жыл бұрын
It would be great to see a speed trace (and differentials) between: 1. Dry line in the dry 2. Dry line in the wet 3. Wet line in the wet The differential between 2 & 3 would be especially interesting...

mrtheoden what about 1993 then, all those defences from Prost where he held him off for a few laps, where everyone praises him but they don't realise that almost all of those battles invariably end with Senna losing out, and then being overtaken by other cars because he used too much fuel fighting Prost.

Correct me if I’m wrong but it appears that a driver is widening or extending, the track upon corner entry and narrowing the track on corner exit? I must assume he is playing with the throttle as well the entire time trying to get a feel for the limit of traction everywhere?

He changed tires under the safety car and had tires that were 25 laps fresher than the guys he was passing. Amazing how few people seem to realize that...

Would have been nice to talk about wet setup as well, not just lines. I wonder if the common wisdom of softer suspension more downforce still holds true, combined with shifting brake bias to the rear due to reduced front braking force. Maybe that is material for another video, but it was notably absent here

Schumi and Alonso may be elites in the rain, but Senna and Hamilton are gods of the rain... Verstappen? well... I'd like to see more of his rain driving before deciding, but he's got potential

As much as I think that Max is petulant, immature and largely absent any desire to reflect or self-assess, his natural skill is immense. Brazil 2016 was enough to include him in that top flight mentioned in the intro.

In the wet, first avoid standing waters by being very attentive, seamless inputs are required. Remember " in the dry, the car talks to you but in the wet the car whispers to you" said M. Schumacher. Listen very carefully ..Drive with conviction..Ps. learning to drive in the snow will help you in the wet.

It's too much to call them the greatest wet drivers in history. But the Verstappen family should deserve a mention. Jos in Canada 2000, Malaysian 2001. Max in Brazil 2016.
