You don't want the show runners to make up anything. The ending followed the book--leave it that way.

For better or worse, the book was different in some respects, but having read it just before I watched this series, I’d say the series was very close. I know opinions differ, but I also thought this series was way superior to the 1984 series.

To the "Clavell book lovers", Michaela Clavell aproved the changes. But yeah, you know better than James Clavell's daughter To the GoT afraid ones, GoT had (still hasn't) source material at all for the ending. The events that happened to the real life characters, in which Shogun character are based, after the events depicted in the book, were more interesting that the events depicted in the book...

At the end I just thought, Toranaga was contemplating the battle to come, to become Shogun. That left it open for a new series. Now obviously the book source is complete but the real history is there and can be told.

Yes this series was disappointing to those who have read the novellby James Clavell. Clavell would never have authorized the changes made by the director. Hiromatsu did not commit seppuku, it was another general. Naga did not die a fools death. Read the novel, it is so much better than any TV version! The only thing that I really enjoyed were the actress's portrayals of Mariko, Fujiko, Gyoko, and the Lady Ochiba. All were great in their roles and quite lovely. The actors who portrayed Blackthorn, and Kasigi Yabu, did not fit with the novel IMO. Poor casting decisions. Again read the novel and enjoy for a lifetime. Konnichi-wa.

No, the ending was not "perfect" and was profounding disappointing. James Clavell's book does not have the "dream sequence," and Blackthorne (Addams) never returned to England (both in fiction and history). Despite bringing the book to life for most of the shows, the writers and producers dropped the ball and should have instead filmed the ending the way that the book (and 1980s mini-series) did. For me, the last show was "Game of Thrones"-final season ending disappointing.
