"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZfaq. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZfaq, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode.

I'm glad Jon went right for the jugular, didn't let up, and used the man's own words against him. These people need to be constantly and publicly told how wrong, terrible, and hypocritical they are, not coddled by MSM pundits who give them softballs and never follow up on serious issues. If the media could just have a chance to break through to politicians' sense of humanity (or at least shame), maybe they could actually be steered towards helping the people more often.

Too bad the gun data Jon is using here bizarrely includes 18 and 19 year olds, which is the only way you're actually able to get the numbers he's citing, so he's actually incorrect. Sexual shows for kids are also not free speech, sorry. Why are people so in favor of grown men in drag twerking for children? It's really gross, and shows a lack of basic common sense. I think when people argue like that, it’s a dead giveaway that they are more concerned with their side being right than having intelligent discussion between two people to get to the bottom of something. @@Khalkara You can still be in favor of 2nd Amendment, but believe in its whole context as established by over 100+ years of precedence. For most of American history it was understood under the well-regulated militia argument and that not all arms shall be accessible to all people. That's why tommy guns were banned. Ahistorical argument is the modern one we saw Jon Stewart destroy. We have a right to bear arms while in a well-regulated militia shall not be infringed. We can bear arms, but commonsense is for what purpose? To be part of a well-regulated militia. Even when not if a state has militia laws in the book like Massachusetts. Citizens can own guns, but only for the call of the town militia. My old town I grew up with in the town charter would have a call monthly for militiamen as part of our civilian defense of our communities. The mayor and the governor could call the militias to be active in a time the commonwealth needs it. Used during the Revolutionary War and right up to the late 19th/early 20th century, but became unpopular once we created the police system, and the national guard. Most states don't even bother with those types of archaic laws since most males over 21 aren't actively in a militia and aren't on call by their local government. We have police/national guards to do the work we would all be required as freeborn males.

@@Khalkara true they dismiss precedence for their own made-up version. For example, during the "Wild West" days in most towns the sheriff would take possession of your guns and check them at his station. Town ordinances made it clear there were no guns in most towns and would have those who visited check them in. Was that a violation of their freedoms? No! It's the Hollywood version of the West where there were shootouts nearly every day when in reality that was the exception not the norm, and why would settlers have it any other way? Even back then they knew it was stupid to let people drink and have guns on their holsters. Bad recipes for needless violence. Then after WW2 a radical faction started to make their arguments which back then was dismissed as asinine. This group served during the war and loved their weapons they trained with, and wanted them for personal usage. This especially blew up after Vietnam when many veterans felt rejected and found solace in gun associations and shooting weapons similar to the ones they used during the war. Hollywood made it worse because that's when spaghetti westerns became super popular from 1960-1980s.

"the regulation part is about the militia"... yeah THE WHOLE THING is about the militia, you are also leaving out the part that directly says that this militia and the ability to have "arms" (not guns) is to protect the state NOT yourself. Its one sentence, its very clearly written, yet so many people either are intellectually dishonest or stupid to not understand the clear basic English of that amendment. The whole amendment was written when there wasn't a direct state/national military to defend the new country from the countries they just pissed off who DID have militaries.

It's funny how you basically spell it out, but still don't understand it. Yes, the militia is a huge part of why the amendment exists, and it is true that it was made due to the intentional lack of a federal military. But you are still missing that this has no bearing on what the arguments we are having now are all about: the individual right to own guns. The militia members were meant to be normal citizens, like you and I, and they were expected to buy, keep, and maintain their own weapons. That is why it is spelled so clearly in the 2A that it's the right OF THE PEOPLE to keep and bear arms.
@Khalkara
@Khalkara Жыл бұрын
@@kylelewis5540 You are the person OP is describing, you're too stupid to understand something so simple. You can't cite arguments like "militia members were meant to be normal citizens", because that would then logically mean the amendment only refers to adult white property owning males. But you do it because you didn't think that far ahead, you're just blindly repeating empty talking points. A reasonably intelligent/non-dishonest person would conclude that a militia as a concept is made out of people, and since a concept cannot have rights but people can have rights, it only makes sense to phrase that if people of a militia have a right to something that you would refer to them as "the people". There is no honest linguistic reason why those words refer to the general public, the amendment is *one* sentence which means it shares the same subject which is the militia. You can still defend the idea of gun ownership without the 2A, I wish you people would grow the brainmass to comprehend this and stop saying dumb*fck stuff like this.

It's not just "We have more guns than any other country and more gun deaths" - it's literally every country with more guns, have more gun deaths, and yes, that includes Switzerland which is, for some reason, often touted as proof of the opposite. There's a widely available linear regression model of this, and while Switzerland is beneath the regression line and the US is above it (meaning there are obviously ways to lower gun deaths to some extent in spite of having many guns), the causative relationship between more guns and gun deaths is irrefutable and clear as day, there's zero debate. I also think the guns vs. cars argument is pretty dumb, as cars at least serve an important utility purpose beyond adults wanting to cosplay cowboys.

It infringes on the right to bear arms because this technology does not practically exist yet. So to require microstamping technology on guns would essentially make it so that no new guns can be sold, which is an obvious infringement. It is also a useless law since files exist.
