For months now, we have been pondering how to lock our school bus front door and still be able to utilize the original design. In this video, we show you how we achieved all without welding.

Doing a Skoolie conversion is not an easy feat. We are literally doing a tiny house build and doing a school bus conversion to RV. If you have any tips or words of encouragement please write them down below. We want to live the bus life and take you guys with us as we become a skoolie vlogger.

I love working with Bondo but if you haven't worked with Bondo before work in smaller batches less likely to mess up and if you do mess up it's easier to fix can't wait to get my I'm getting excited thanks guys giving me great ideas!!!

Love this. Our bus has the same issue. I was thinking of a similar solution but was thinking of carriage bolts instead of rivets.

You may want to increase the amount of rivets on the door while it seems tight now the vibration and force of the door closing could cause them to work loose. If it does happen maybe have to sand it back down and get it welded but that could be a while down the road. As for locking it put a lock on each side one for inside security and the other for leaving it this way only one lock is needed and less chance of losing it.

Rivets are not really that strong especially if they are made of aluminum but since it's not structural you shouldn't worry. It looks amazing, great job!!!

the airsystem for the doors in the front are a nice feature but if you need to use it everytime you need to go ou and in it will become a bother , might be able to do a quick disconnect of the mecanism so you can still use it but only when you want to allso doing 60 on the freeway with doors like these will make them flap about a little and rattle constandly , over here the doors are locked using strong electric magnets while the bus is moving , that might help in youre case too

Your original small metal frame on door...Less door, more glass=better visibility! That means safer turns and less chance of running over kids at bus stop! Cant believe some ppl put big camper doors on a bus, gonna run up some curbs or hit people on bikes.

I see you guys did your horizontal furring strips on the ceiling almost identical as I did. Did you run any lengthwise? And if not, did you have any issues with sagging in your ceiling?? Tia!!

the only length wise ones are on the walls. But no issues!!

My bus door is identical to yours except that it's made of aluminum in the frame so even if I wanted to weld it into place I couldn't. I was thinking of doing my doors the same way you did but I was curious what rivets you ordered. I'm having trouble finding any of that I believe would be long enough

Hey! We ordered them off of amazon. They are Pop Rivets 3/16" x 1-3/8" Aluminum and they were plenty long enough for the door! We will add a link to the video too!

Re: holes left by stop sign: It's funny you called Bondo "great stuff" because we actually used a product called Great Stuff (insulative spray foam) to fill the holes before covering with Bondo. Just subscribed last week; you guys are awesome: love the level of detail you go into, even including your mistakes and how you fixed them: super rare. I'll probably be back here every day until our bus is complete 😅 Thanks!
