The ability to make a workbench mobile is a necessity in a small workshop.
See how to add wheels to 4x4 bench legs in a sturdier way than simply drilling into the end grain.
It's easy to do with pocket hole screws and a plywood square.

Learned something new today. I was wondering why I couldn't find screws large enough to fasten the larger casters. Lag bolts are required for these. Easy. Just installed four casters on my movable shelf in the garage. Thanks again!

Love your voice. And I'm so grateful to hear from another woman in the woodworking community! Thanks for all the tips! So neat to hear at the end that you learned how to tighten bolts from your dad. I'm trying to share what I'm learning in woodworking with my kiddos right now. There's something precious about passing on knowledge like that.

Awesome video! I was scouring KZfaq for someone who actually thought this through instead of just crewing right into to the ingrain which would likely blow right out under a plethora of circumstances. Thank you 🙏

Yeah, not many folks even show how they attached their casters. I roll my benches all over the shop and outside and they are holding up well.

Thank you for this video. Excellent point on the weakness of going directly into the end grain. Very helpful.

Good job. As you described drilling into the end grain of the 4x4, and then adding a piece of plywood to strengthen that mounting point I kept thinking - she hasn't allowed for the pocket screws hitting the bracket screws. And then - you did!!! Don't ask me why I know this. I learned this painful lesson many years ago - a couple of times (I'm a slow learner sometimes). Thumbs up!

I only have casters with a threaded stem and they are to go straight up into 2x4 leg through a t-nut. Do you think this will be secure enough?
@HeartwoodArt
@HeartwoodArt 4 жыл бұрын
I don’t have any experience with stem bolt casters, but considering how bog that bolt is, and how deep it goes into the wood, I would think it would be okay. I mainly see those used when connecting to metal legs, or wood things that aren’t going to be moved a lot

Could you tell me, what size pocket screws did you use? It looks like you used plywood that's 3/4" to 1" thick. If I use 3/4" plywood, would 2.5" inch pocket screws be safe from penetrating out from the bottom of the plywood square?

I believe I set the bit and jig to 1-1/4 and used 1-1/2 screws to mate to the 3/4 plywood. See my Kreg cheat sheet here heartwoodart.com/kreg-jig-k3-and-k4-how-to-cheat-sheet-and-tips/

Would it be worthwhile to add wood glue between the legs and the plywood squares?
@HeartwoodArt
@HeartwoodArt Жыл бұрын
Yes. And I should have added glue too. It doesn’t adhere as well on butt end pieces, but it helps

What size screws? I have a mini jig but not sure what distance to attach jig at and do I leave the collar off the bit?

audi a4 see my tutorial on the Kreg jigs that has a cheat sheet for depth settings and screw lengths. And you have to leave the collar on for proper depth heartwoodart.com/kreg-jig-k3-and-k4-how-to-cheat-sheet-and-tips/

I am wanting to attach casters to a 2 x 4 leg rather than 4 x 4. What is the best way to accomplish this?
@HeartwoodArt
@HeartwoodArt 4 жыл бұрын
Marshall Moens on my mitre saw station I had doubled 2x4s instead of a 4x4. So, maybe you could attach another 2x4 block near the end of the leg to double the width. Not sure if there’s enough room for all of the screws, though

Thank you for your videos! I accidentally drilled pocket holes too deep. Then I found this possible dowel solution: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/obF2n6R9vNy6lY0.html. Would it work well for holding plywood blocks to legs?
