People seem to think that zero wastes means ZERO waste, absolutely none whatsoever. Which is why I don’t like calling it “zero waste”, I call it minimal waste; signifying that I’m trying to create as minimal waste as I possibly can. Also it takes a LONG time to transition into the minimal waste lifestyle that you want to live. And even then there are times (like you’ve said) there are things you can’t find in minimal waste that you need... or even you may not have a package free grocery stores anywhere near you, so you have to buy a few things in packaging (which fricken sucks)

Hank Green just came out with a really good video about how recycling works on his channel Hank's channel talking about the life cycle of products. He has a degree in biochemistry. Also a collab with a science channel for the video on recycling would be really amazing.

In Sewden we have recycling areas where you recycle paper, cardboard, glass, metal and plastic. I think we have a new law that says that we have to compost food waste now aswell (I just do it anyway). Other waste gets burned to heat up houses... not the best. I dont think we have landfills anymore....

That's awesome! They used to collect food waste in my area until 2016. I'm hoping to start making our own compost next year and then hopefully find someone who wants to use it. I'm trying to minimise what we throw out as much as possible..

One thing life has taught me is that anything is better than nothing, society has this idea that anything less than 100% is 0%, and so with stuff like "you must exercise 5 days a week or it won't work" people take it as "if you can't 5 days a week, don't do it at all" so people don't bother. You're doing as good as you can with a zero waste lifestyle, and a minimal waste lifestyle beats a maximum waste lifestyle anyday. You're an amazing person and I like that you do what you do.

Stopped buying frozen berries earlier this year as part of my zero-waste mission... I've been thinking its maybe the one thing I might go back on, since I miss it in my smoothies.

I totally feel ya! I didn't buy them for the first maybe 7 or 8 months or so of my low waste journey, and noticed that they were so important for my health after not including them. I probably sound looney but I really noticed a difference. I feel like if there are pieces of your life that are important for your health/sanity/to you, then restricting yourself from them is never the answer, but finding an alternative solution that works in your life! 💛

in Germany, we get a lot of frozen fruit in cardboard boxes. those usually contain 300- 500 g and they are a bit more expensive but at least it's recyclable packaging

I love the raw and honesty of this video. The berry idea I find is genius because you are supporting local farmers/producers and making it worth your while because berries can get quite expensive in the winter months alone!

Hi Emily, I live in Alaska so I totally get where you're coming from. But I did find that if you have a Costco near you they don't Jack up the prices of their frozen berries at all! Which saves me money in the long run.

my parents have wild blackberry bushes near them and occasionally they will pick them for snacks and smoothies, but recently my father had mentioned that he dug up a wild plant (he likes to garden) and is attempting to grow it in his backyard, which i think is pretty cool. i also convinced him previously to start composting for the sake of his garden, and seeing other people around me make a positive influence is really inspiring. this is why i chose to have faith in our earth, and i am so glad to have found a community who shares my hope and passion.

(And if course they said that, what are they supposed to say when someone gives them something (even if it's literal garbage)? There's a power dynamic at work in that situation, they're not going to seem ungrateful because there's the chance that they won't be given anything else (that's actually useful) if they don't show gratitude for every little thing.)

sanityisrelative I think they are talking about putting your extra food into a bin that will turn into fertilizer for their plants! Composting is a good way to take care of waste (food scraps) and doesn’t relate to homeless people. But you are very sweet for looking out for those homeless people.

Hey! I have some recycling info I thought I'd share! Plastic recycling is really iffy because we don't have a lot of plastic recycling facilities domestically- when you're plastic waste is "recycled", often times it is just being shipped overseas and/or landfilled due to the sheer amount of excess waste (the facilities we do have can't convert it at the rate we need). How do we address this? If you have to use single-use items, opt for glass, metal, and paper products! We have SO many recycling and converting facilities for these products domestically, which makes them cheaper to recycle and ultimately use less energy as we don't have to ship them long distances. Glass and metal can be recycled infinitely, while paper products can be recycled until the fibers break down (usually 7+ times). Most plastics can only be recycled twice before they take a form that can no longer be recycled. I don't know the specific numbers for glass and metal, but cardboard is recycled and converted at a rate of about 92% and waste papers are recycled at about 60-70%, and about two-thirds of the paper produced domestically comes from recycled fibers! So if you need to use single-use items, opt for things that have recycling/converting facilities near your city to ensure that they are actually recycled and not ending up in the landfill. Sources: I work for the sustainability office on my campus so I know a lot about waste management/recycling/composting on a large-university scale as well as for the city of Raleigh! I also took several paper science classes this past year at school so I would be happy to answer any other questions about recycling/paper products/the paper industry!

A lot of vegan foods are supplemented with b12, tofu, nutritional yeast, etc.

@@9melissal correct, but not all brands of nutritional yeast or tofu are fortified with B12. Also those are not foods all vegans eat. I cannot stand either of them, so I have to supplement. It is good though that there are foods fortified with B12!

@@9melissal Depends on the brand, but the issue for me is how well is our body absorbing the b12 in these foods? That’s why it’s best to get your vitamin levels tested regularly (regardless if you supplement or get your vitamins from food sources), and supplement when/if needed.

Hi, recycling nerd here! Your explanation was pretty good! In general, my hierarchy of recyclability goes about like this: aluminum (bean cans, beverage containers, etc), cardboard, hard plastics (thicker the better), regular paper, glass, soft plastic (like bags). Soft plastics can definitely be recycled at your local grocery store, there's usually a bin in the lobby but don't put them in your curbside bin, they create lots of problems for the machines at recycling plants. Glass usually just gets ground into a filler for concrete which is why it's lower on my list. There are some markets in the US (salt lake City off the top of my head) that are creating a circular economy for glass locally which is awesome. I could go on and on, I have a few insta highlight stories about recycling and you can dm me if you have questions. I'm @reebsrebareb on insta, I don't participate on KZfaq much.

Yes!! The glass recycling program in my community (OBX NC) is circular in that they grind up recycled glass and turn it into a “mulch” for driveways and yard cover that is then sold back to community members. Very interesting process but keeps us from having to ship it off the island to be recycled (:

thriftbooks.com is a really cool website for second hand books. you can usually choose how much wear you want (and the price that fits it), ie new, used, well used. i’ve bought up to five new books for $20. hell yeah! i would love to be able to switch to audio books but i just love physical books too much. (also, they have textbooks!!)

I’m not sure if this is an option where you live, but I really really love using my library card/account to listen to audiobooks through the Libby and Hoopla apps! Ya girl is also trying to save up and move out of my parents’ house lol, so I love that I can enjoy allll the books for free! Not to knock Audible, of course! Just thought I’d add that, in case it’s helpful for you or other friends here! 💕

One of my biggest waste issues is having to buy premade frozen dinners because I'm disabled and can't always cook for myself. And I know that because I'm disabled a lot of people will let me off the hook, but it still bothers me. But something I recently realised I can do is upcycle the boxes because they aren't recyclable at all (but the plastic trays the actual food sits in usually is.) I have begun to break and cut the boxes down and draw on the white inside part, and it works like a DREAM! Some of the best paper I've ever used! I'm never going to have to buy paper again. When I fill up the sketchbooks I have I'm going to just start making my own out of these boxes. This way I can eat my food and feel just a little less guilty. Next stop: transitioning to more sustainable art supplies (pens, paints, etc)

im a teenager, still living at home, with my parents. but anyway im a teenager, and ive been watching your videos A LOT the past couple of days because they are interesting and they are inspiring. but i actually have started to make some things. I reused a glass jar for diy toothpaste, and i used a mason jar for mouthwash. i also make my one cotton rounds out of a thrifted shirt i had that i was about to donate again! but the main question i have is, do you have anymore ideas that me being a teenager and having to live under my parents rules could be. ive talked to them a little bit, about composting(because there is a compost place down the street from me) and using bar soap instead of the soap that comes in plastic bottles. but once again, do you have any ideas on how i could reduce more waste?❤️👌🏼

Hey Sedona, In Germany there is this brand called "happypo" which sales bidets that come as little bottles you just have to fill up with water. Actually they are made out of plastic, but if you haven't got a bidet, it's a really good alternative! Greetings from Austria

I grew up in WA, in Tumwater. In high school, I would get paid to help trim back blackberry bushes for local families and businesses. I got to keep all the berries I picked and that came from trimmed branches. I'd freeze a lot, but I ended up donating so many to the local food bank and soup kitchen for families who couldn't afford fresh fruits most of the year.

I highly recommend the podcast Costing the Earth. Sweeping statements like "buying local is best" is actually not quite as straight forward. I thought the same thing until I listened to a few of their episodes explaining why locally grown produce isn't always the most eco-friendly, particularly so for people like me in the UK.

I've been wanting more green in my room! Couldn't figure out how to do it without being unsustainable. I looked at Facebook market place and found a shelf. I bought it yesterday. Buying two aloe vera planets today, giving one to a friend. And looking at others for the near future! So happy thanks for the great idea!

On the topic of plants, once the plant is ready to repot out of the plastic pot it comes in, check out goodwill! They have tons and I mean TONS of pots for super cheap.

A lot of local nurseries might take back the plastic plant pot as they can be sanitized and re-used! I know my local one does. But personally I keep them because I have a community garden plot and I use them season after season to start seeds indoors :)

Public libraries have audiobooks and ebooks for free too! Also you should check out plantswap.org for people who want to trade or give away plants. You can re-use those plastic grower's pots your bought plants come in for as long as they hold up. Just pop them into a ceramic container if you don't like the black plastic look.

I reuse glass jars for making candles, mostly. I’ve even gotten jars from family and friends. I also plan on learning how to can this summer so I can go to farmers markets, garden, etc and be able to save on money and waste by making my own sauce, salsa, and jam/jelly.

I love how you keep it real :) btw I don't know if there are Bulk Barns in the states but I found grapeseed oil at Bulk Barn up in Canada. PS: I love that black top! So cute with the loose knit!!

The easiest way to make beans is on a day where you know you will be home for 4 hours. Put on low heat: beans, onion, garlic and salt and pepper to taste. Add water a couple times as it boils down and then you can freeze half. I usually get a 1/4 and put it in the blender with oat flour and extra seasonings to make my type of "refried beans" and voila.

if you could do a video on sustainability burnout that would be great, especially since you mentioned glass and aluminium as wasteful. i’m fairly new to zero waste so most of my swaps are to those materials and i think that’s perfectly ok for beginners (and pretty much everyone really). it’s just that the goal of perfectionism and being perfectly ‘zero waste with absolutely no packaging isn’t realistic for most people and i think it would be good to mention that, so that people don’t feel the pressure to be perfect. i know that you’ve mentioned it before but if you could talk more about/do a dedicated video on this topic it would fab🥰💕

I go with local organic. I guess - and it's a guess - it's less harmful this plastic than the whole pesticides thing plus transportation Sorry I'm not native English speaker, hope it's clear enough

So interesting and so good to hear someone talk about energy costs! It’s hard to deny that plastic is terrible, but demonising its use fails to consider that it became a popular alternative to more traditional materials such as glass because glass is so dense and weighs so much before you even put the product in, significantly increasing the energy cost of transportation.

This summer I recommend you buy a bunch of fresh berries and freeze them yourself! We do that with blueberries in Vancouver BC! We freeze them first on a baking sheet (so that they don't freeze stuck together) then transfer them into big freezer ziplock bags.

Another amazing resource I found to replace books is an app called Libby, you use your library card to access ebooks. You get to check out the book or audio for 30 days and it returns itself so no fees if you forget !

Some garden centres in the UK ask you to return your plastic pots so they can reuse them. It might be worth checking out local to you.

A lot of home improvement stores (Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc) have giant bins for the plant containers! It may vary from area to area but also a lot of nurseries take them (check with local schools a lot of schools have greenhouses!!)

YES! As of right now, I have leftover compostable paper mailers from eco enclose from when I sold merch. But other than that, the best thing to do is to reuse other people's mailer waste! Whether that's gathering old shipping envelopes from friends/family's online purchases or going to local shops and asking if they have any materials left over (you'd be surprised what small shops/cafes/etc. have and throw away!). In regards to buying plants, try seeing if whoever you are purchasing allows you to bring your own pot and let the reuse their plastic pot at the store. Worth a shot :)

For recycling! Check with your recycling plant to see what they are taking each year. On their website they should have listed what numbers of plastic they are taking. In my town they only take plastics 1&2. I really avoid any other plastics. Right now in the us many recycling facilities are having to bring things to the landfill because China is no longer buying a lot of our recycling. So please call! Get involved! They want to help

I say go for the protein that comes in the tub, if you don’t feel confident recycling it you can always reuse it which you probably can’t do with the plastic bag protein. Larger tubs can come in really handy especially around the holidays when you need gift box alternatives. Keep up the good work!

YES! I love WGAC! I actually did a project on them in university (random unimportant fun fact haha) and have loved them ever since! But since I juuuuust moved, I haven't had a chance to order from them yet! I just picked up these recycled ones at my local grocery shop when I was pressed for time 💛I should have mentioned them in the video but completely forgot! ooooops! x

We have a local nursery that takes the little plastic pots, sanitize them and reuse them, there may be one in your area that does the same.

Thanks for sharing! Just starting my zero/low waste journey :) I'm actually in the Seattle area (Eastside area) and would love any insights on local places to check out. I'm a huge book nerd, and recently found out that King County, Seattle and Snohomish Libraries are all partnered (not sure that's the word) so as long is you live in one of them you can get library cards for the others. That's one of my cheats for cutting down on my spending, save those credits for books that aren't available :). Also the libraries have free museum/zoo passes which I've yet to use but hopefully will check out this summer. :)

I have this amazing upcycled earrings made from Pepsi cans and a necklace from soda bottle caps that I got on Etsy. I love to not just thrift online, I also upcycle shop online. A lot of online upcycle sellers will also take donates, that you can ship in a cardboard box to them to help them recycle, you recycle a box from other purchases, and help them make more money as an upcycle seller.

I am homebound, so I have to get most things on line. I like thredUp clothing, but I avoid swap, because swap packages each item in plastic film before putting them in a plastic shipping bag.

I’m a huge book worm what has worked for me was going to my local library and just getting all the books I want to read. And most of the time I’m okay that I don’t own the book, but some I still feel like re-reading but I can’t so I rent it again and if I still want to own it I buy it second had. They had audiobooks as well (my sister has audible, but I didn’t want to pay 🙄)

I'm so glad it was helpful and reassuring!! It's a hard one because I (theoretically) don't want to advocate for extra waste because it can be interpreted by people in different ways through the internet for sure! But at the end of the day, I (and EVERY 'zero' waste advocate on the internet) am human and DEFINITELY create waste and have mess ups or need something that I can't find secondhand sometimes! Just last night I needed something last minute for a hiking trip and needed to go to my local REI and get a new item of gear (that fingers crossed will have for the rest of my life) that I wasn't going to be able to find secondhand. So it definitely happens! I'm not perfect, and I'm continuing to get better and better as I learn more and let of of attachments, but I don't think I (or anyone else) will ever be 'perfect' because it truly doesn't exist. And at the end of the day, the movement itself has flaws because there are so many areas that are more important for the environment than the end consumer's waste. BUT the conversation about it is VITAL! So even if we're not perfect as consumers, it's okay! Just by speaking up we're making a huge impact on the future! 💛 (lol sorry for this novel I totally just got carried away typing... haha!) xo

@@SedonaChristina it's very reassuring! I think zero waste advocates can accidentally project an image of being EXACTLY zero waste, which is a little daunting for ppl who are still new to the movement (like me) and can make us feel guilty when areas of our lives aren't totally sustainable yet. Many 'zero waste for beginners' videos emphasize that it can be a long transition and that baby steps are still steps (which is great!), but it's also nice to see ppl who are further along in their zero waste journey speak on the areas in their lives that aren't 100% 'sustainable' bc it really emphasizes the fact that it's a JOURNEY for everyone. Love your videos and thank you again for making this vid!

Sooo late to the party, but if you happen to see this: Don't pick berries along highway!!! I am in Oregon. Counties and cities pay to have blackberries abated with herbicides. Those herbicides take some time to work, so you cannot always tell what areas have been sprayed! You can get really sick doing that!!!

Speaking about chocolate, in the Netherlands we have a brand called Tony Chocolonely. It is very sustainable and comes in a paper packaging. It’s also really delicious with very interesting flavors, sold in regular supermarkets and very popular. In my opinion, they changed the chocolate game in the Netherlands, because a lot of other ‘normal’ brands are now also more sustainable.

Also, I worked at Lowe's and the vendor comes to deliver the plants themselves. If you return the plastic bottom they will take them back and reuse them for more plants. Maybe something to look into?

I actually produce manufacturing waste because I provide a service that encourages a waste free lifestyle. But to help combat that I use cotton thread , cotton fabric and use the scrapes to make door stoppers . and the thread spools I use are cardboard . and I buy fabric from thrift stores and garage sales sometimes when I find it .

Hi! Loved this video. The berry thing is such a good idea. So excited for this time of year when berries can be purchased locally😊. I was wondering about the brand of chocolate you mentioned though.... Super awesome to be able to snag free chocolate btw..but I was recently looking to purchase a bar and I was confused with their ingredients. I didn't remember seeing it say specifically anything about milk, however, where it lists ingredients it says contains🙁🙁 I know recently I came across something where if it's too high a chance for contamination they list it as "contains" rather than " may contain" but I saw an emblem that read Kosher Dairy on the back of the bar too.... Idk... just something I remember seeing when looking for a treat, and try to pass along information to other vegans. I hate to ruin chocolate for someone though, I'm not mean i swear lol.
