I Love the V&T railroad and I'm from Indiana

Thank you for another great video. I'm a retired historical archaeologist who has walked and documented (before the new railroad was built) the entire V&T right of way between VC and Moundhouse and I appreciate your efforts to keep history alive.

The juxtaposition with original photos is very well done.

It is a crying shame the V&T line and ROW could not have been saved. It would be a marvelous ride from Reno to Virginia City through Carson City.

Another education, thanks very much for that...The train station downtown, the final stop, housed the Reno Turf Club for many years..While working at the Turf when trains would go by back then in the 70's and 80's (pre tunnel) that building would vibrate. Lived for 3 years north of Reno and visited Carson City and Virginia City many times. It's a beautiful place and we were sad to leave but we have many great memories living there. I knew the railroad ran through there but never had the chance to follow the old grades. Thanks for sharing! It's very interesting. You were talking about the grades some of these old locomotives had to climb. Go for a ride on the Cumbres and Toltec Narrow Gauge Railroad formerly part of the San Juan Division of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad. The grade out of Chama New Mexico has a maximum grade of 4%. The narrow gauge (3 ft) lines were used in the mountains because they were cheaper to build and maintain and they could handle steeper grades than the standard-gauge railroad locomotives. Worth a visit if you get the chance!

I grew up in Steamboat Springs and I was told a story by Dorthy Towne when I was a kid. Where the Steamboat Massage center is across the Steamboat Creek there stood a fancy hotel that served the V&T. When I was a kid in the 80's you could still find ruins of the place and there was a tree house in a big old tree next to it.

I've known for some time, the route the train took, but I've never thought about hiking the part up to Lakeview. You have peaked my curiosity, and I'm going to hike that as soon as the weather becomes better.

I have always had a love of trains. Mostly know the railroads on the eastern side of the country. Saw your video. Enjoyed it so much

A couple corrections, Carson City is in Eagle Valley, Minden/Gardnerville is in Carson Valley. Also, mountain you pointed out from Old Washoe City is Slide Mountain. Mt Rose is to the north and out of scene. Love your videos and reminiscing from native Nevadan who grew up in CC and Reno. Parents owned hotel/bar 1 block north of capitol during 60's/70's (Fireside Inn) and knew all the politicians of this era. All the Governors stopped in regularly, some more than others). Much of the 1968 corporate gaming bill was negotiated in our "back room" that ended the mafia control of casinos.

When I drunk beer, I would vigorously stir it with a spoon... lol... Well degassed, not filling at all, the taste was also much more appreciable to me.

Great presentation! You've touched on 3 of my favorite subjects: Geography, railroads and history. We have to remember where we were and what we had to do to get to where we are today. The way you calculate grade percentages is by comparing units of elevation per 100 units of iinear travel. For instance if a grade elevates by 1 foot over a linear distance of 100 feet, that is a 1% grade. If the grade rises 2 and a half feet over 100 linear feet, that would be a 2.5 % grade and so on. That was very good, Steve! Have you ever done anything on Coney island? I guess there were water rides, ferris wheel, etc. Apparently, a lot of wealthy tourists in the 1870 visited. The Coney Island bar was an ice house, I believe.

Great video!! Thank you for highlighting these links to the past that we still have! In south Reno, there’s a raised embankment along Old Virginia Rd (between that and the modern freeway). In the past 5 years or so, much of it has been removed to make way for the warehouses, but some of it is still there. Would that be part of the old V&T ROW?

just so sad, it is a crime that our history is paved over and tossed into the dust bin. even here were i live just on the other side of the "hill" in ca there is so much history forgotten.

Did the train actually go to Truckee?

For a State that relies heavily on tourism, we sure have destroyed a lot of what makes tourism work.
