Round six of the 1991 World Bike GP Championship at Hockenheim featured a truly breathtaking battle for supremacy in the 500cc class and Wayne Rainey (Marlboro Yamaha) and Kevin Schwantz (Lucky Strike Suzuki) took the race down to the wire as they pushed themselves and their mighty two-stroke machines to the absolute limit!

Other stars of the race included Eddie Lawson (Cagiva), Wayne Gardner (Rothmans Honda), Didier de Radigues (Lucky Strike Suzuki) and Mick Doohan (Rothmans Honda), who took the lead in the early stages, before being hunted down by the American duo of Schwantz and Rainey.
Italian Luca Cadalora gave an outstanding performance in the 250 cc Championship despite his own back injuries, continuing his ongoing battle with arch-rival Helmut Bradl.

Battle of the gods! And that’s on 500cc 2 strokes! Ultra violent power bands. And that’s without any of the pansy nannies like roll, yaw, wheelie, anti slip mitigations. Everything is controlled by the rider. Like I said, gods.

IMO , 70s was a better times in F1 than around 1990. Each racing series has a different evo. Again IMO, the last 2 or 3 decades in F1 have been poor in general, with a few great moments. 500 and MotoGP have been great almost everytime since (at least!) the 80s.

At Assen (somewhere at the beginning of the 90s) we went over the (then still low) barrier to congratulate Schwantz after the race. I got so close I could basically pat him on the back. Turned out the backmarkers were still finishing their race, or at least still packing some serious speed. Never have I come so close to shitting my pants as those last 500's were screaming past while we were standing next to Kevin. Hardly saw them flying past. Needless to say we were ushered back by pretty upset officials, the next time I visited the circuit (a few years later) some pretty high fences were erected.

As a teenager, I was a big fan of K. Schwantz. His driving skills were out of this world and his driving style was a joy to the eyes. Also he has always been faithfull to Suzuki though this was never the best allround bike of the GP500 era. I was in front of my TV watching this german GP in 1991 and this very last lap is engraved forever in my memories. Thanks M. Schwantz for putting sparkles in our eyes back in the days. Modern racing is so boring compared to this.

@@manuelrodriguez2637 after 1 may 1994 i was a broken young man, 1 year before, my grandpa died who i loved dearly, then Senna my idol. I can tell you the rest of the 90s i was a devil in human form i did some crazy things untill i married my wife in '99 and then i slowly turned around. But to go back to the sport i have seen everything till about 2015 after that i lost trust in motorsports in general. Ofcourse we've had Marquez but in the beginning he was doing it with his own talents without help. after 2015 the crazy penalty with Rossi and the huge changes to the bikes, i turned away, just like F1 2014 i don't trust that change either. Mercedes from nothing to unbeatable? Nooo, as we say it in the netherlands, try to sell that to your cat and not to me! But you're right when these dominant years begin first with Hamilton then Verstappen, yes it's too boring. But that i think is something pushed by FIA and FIM/Dorna and money.
