3 HD camcorders attached to a helium balloon (horizon, earth and balloon) filmed the ascent of the ensemble to over 31 000 m altitude with temperature measurement , altitude and pressure.
IMPORTANT 1: If the plane touches the probe balloon, it is because it deliberately chose to do so because it appears on the radar screen.
IMPORTANT 2 : All necessary authorizations have been obtained from the french competent authorities. The release date is defined 6 months in advance, with no possibility of modification in case of bad weather. The onboard mass, the dimensions, the flight chain obey to precise standards and the release is realized under the responsibility of a competent person and sworn by the French authorities. A radar reflector allows planes to locate the basket and a parachute is also inserted into the flight chain. The authorities know exactly where and what time the balloon takes off.

For those English language only commenters, a couple of bits of info: 1. This was a school class experiment, and they had informed all the necessary authorities and got ATC clearance. That's in the description, and there are some "Thanks to" in the end credits. 2. The SwissAir jet is a "fake" (ha ha) an it says so in the credits as they thank the people (I think a college, my French is very rusty) who provided it. A great video. High quality, and the on-screen data was very clear (at least for non-US!). I spotted the two aircraft passing below, and noticed that the second one was probably only at about a third of the altitude of the balloon. Well done kids.

Someone at French ATC needs to be spoken to. You DO NOT launch uncontrolled balloons into civilian airspace, no exceptions. There is no way an airliner travelling at 800km/h could see something like that in time to avoid it.

@scagrams
@scagrams 6 жыл бұрын

I've seen a lot of such high ballooning videos, but this belongs to one of the most best footage I've ever seen. The sequence with the airliner is a real luck! First I thought it is edited, but I'm familiar in aerospace. The plane wasn't in danger because of the corner radar reflector so it was all the time on screen of ATC, and of course on screen in the cockpit of the airliner. Also such launches need to be clear with the ATC, even it is not a military test range with no airtraffic or other traffic around. Well done, guys!

Do you use illegal drugs, or the prescribed kind? Tell me how that camera stayed at speed with an airliner doing 600mph? I'll be standing by.
@canofanger
@canofanger 6 жыл бұрын
The airliner part is obviously fake. If you were really familiar with aerospace you would know that ATC would never let aircraft anywhere near a high altitude balloon, let alone a few hundred feet. And the radar on an airliner is tuned to water droplets for weather and is not used for detection or avoidance of other aerial vehicles. If these students had actually caused a near hit with an airliner it would be in the news and they wouldn't be so stupid as to post it.
@desert_jin6281

I agree on ATC seeing the balloon thanks to the radar reflector. But the airliner would not see it as airliner radar is either meteorological or secondary, i.e. dependant on an active radar emitting source.

didn't u all see the plane part was over zoomed? the plane was not that close and that part was edited so as to make the plane look closer, remember, the camera was a wide angle HD one, the plane appears pixelized, proving the zoom was made by editing. Also given the fact that the plane was probably in the jet stream, it's relative speed was probably not more than 300km/h
@idodaisuke4285
@idodaisuke4285 6 жыл бұрын
rewatching the video and according to the position of the sun, the plane is going roughly north to south (sun getting down to the west). no jet stream applicable. maybe the plane was slowing down before landing? quite possible given the fact that the plane is from the company "swiss" and the baloon landed in switzerland. also it mayhave slowed down because of the baloon? The shiny metallic thing at 3:51 is a radar reflector, so we can assume the plane detected the baloon. community.balloonchallenge.org/t/radar-reflector/656 BTW my previous statement was on relative speed, not ground speed of the baloon. at 12:11 u can see the average ground speed of the baloon is 78.6km/h therefore, u can assume is has been caught at some point in a wind that was more than 100km/h. therefore the relative speed of the plane would be "speed of the plane" - "100+ km/h" so relative speed could have been somwhere nearby 300kmh, very similar to our high speed trains in france, no problem to catch it on camera, they mostly were lucky the camera bounced so well as the plane passed. TBH, i was mostly angry at the comments that stated "the airliner part is fake" by ben thare and veev m.

It doesn't look flat at 31 257 m. Make a print screen of the horizon line a 10:19 time mark and then paste it into Paint, select the straight line tool and with it connect the two ends of the horizon and you'll see that while the line is perfectly straight, the horizon itself bends upwards slightly in a quite visible way! Maybe the sun was heating it up and because the air pressure is so low it can't take the heat away fast enough? It is a myth that you freeze instantly when you are exposed to the vaccum of space, vaccum flasks hold their heat because there is no air molecules to take the heat away. The only way to cool down in space is to give up your heat as radiation because there is no conduction.
@dansmith2863
@dansmith2863 4 жыл бұрын
@Joe Cosgrove The heat is transmitted by radiation mostly IR and light. This "heat" travels at the speed of light through space to earth. Because air is transparent light doesn't heat it much, as the light hits the earth it heats up the earth which in turn heats up the transparent air. A vaccum doesn't have a temperature as such because it doesn't have any mass. Space is like a "black body" in that is absorbs or "accepts" all radiation so that if an object is left in the darkness of space it will give up all of its energy as radiation until it reaches absolute zero (has given up all its energy).
@dansmith2863
@dansmith2863 4 жыл бұрын
If you microwave an egg you are heating it with radiation. If you boil an egg you are heating via conduction. The air in a microwave is still cool after you have cooked your egg. So the heat must have been transmitted another way other then heating the air.

No pilot would support the ridiculousness of flat earth. “I studied and researched for about 2 and half years both side...” The only way that’s true is if you only ‘researched’ by watching flat-earth conspiracy videos. “Sea level not sea curve” oh please. This is pathetic. It’s called sea level because that’s where elevation is measured from, not because it’s level. You have all the hallmarks of someone totally unaware of the overwhelming evidence proving that earth is not flat. You also give every impression of someone who will lie and say anything to support your absurd belief. To cling onto any shred of credibility you may have, explain these two simple questions from a flat earth model; 1) how is it now summer south of the equator, and winter north? 2) people north and south of the equator see different stars at night. Explain that.

Surprised? I would've been PISSED! Know what a balloon can do to an airliner? Why do you think that toy drones aren't allowed to fly high enough into commuter airspace anymore? One in the past collided with a helicopter and nearly brought it down the hard way. That balloon could've cost the passengers their lives. I hope the airlines and authorities find this video and pay their teachers a little visit, 'cause it's great evidence.

I'm struggling to believe that it's real. It looks real enough, but how did they track the airliner so well with the camera, where are the contrails and why did the pilot fly so close to the balloon if ATC was aware of it?

What causes all these balloons to pop when they get to a certain height? The temps? If so, can we create better balloons? The Gas used in the balloon? If so, can we create better balloons with a mechanism that injects a lighter gas that can withstand whatever it is that causes these things to burst? Sincerely, the entire world.
@marknesselhaus4376
@marknesselhaus4376 4 жыл бұрын
As the balloon gains altitude the atmospheric pressure outside gets less and the pressure inside the balloon expands until it reaches the bursting point or until a signal is perhaps sent to cause a burst. That's just my basic take on how it works. Different materials are another variable. A great project and wonderful video.

Mark N is right, if the balloon bursts. If the balloon doesn't burst from expansion it will reach an altitude where it's internal pressure equals the atmospheric pressure and simply won't go any higher.
@ChristopherJones16
@ChristopherJones16 4 жыл бұрын
So the question is can we make a balloon that can allow its pressure to be changed by using sensors to read the pressure as it reaches these critical points, and then eject a different kind of gas that will allow the balloon to pass the zone where the pressures are equal as J Richardson pointed out causing the balloon to go no further. I feel like the government has the capability to do this already. It'll take a strong balloon material and a new balloon design.(perhaps put three balloons inside the one balloon each with their own gas) so when one balloon with its own special gas reaches its point and is no longer helpful with climbing in altitude another balloon will fill up with a different gas of different density and pressure value just at the right time to bypass that zone and so on... and deflate the other balloons if need be. I feel like we're acting like cavemen with sending one balloon up with its one type of gas(or gas mixture if that's the case) where it just pops at a given height every time. Also is the air so thin up there that if a Drone was strapped to the balloon programmed to turn on and fly on auto-pilot when the balloon pops.. Would the drone be able to create enough thrust to continue going higher?

First of all, excellent job and congrats to all the people involved in the project. Let’s do some math. We are told that the Earth rotates at a speed of approx. 1600 km per hour at the equator. Switzerland’s latitude is located about 46 degrees north of the equator and therefore, the rotational speed of the Earth at the launch site is approx. 700 mph or about 1126 kph. The rotation of the Earth at 46 degrees amounts about just over 11k per minute. The entire flight amounted to approx. 3 hrs. Now calculate 11K x 180 minutes (3hrs) which amounts to a distance of about 2, 160 km. Now consider that probe balloon landed approx. 200 km away from the launch site. Can someone please explain why the balloon landed only 200 km away and not over 2,000km, while taking into consideration that the atmosphere moves with the rotation of the Earth? I look forward to your reply. Thanks and have a great day!
@rinse-esnir4010
@rinse-esnir4010 4 жыл бұрын
It is easy to explain. If the earth surface is traveling at 1000 km/h, so is the balloon and the atmosphere at the moment the balloon rises. So relative to eachother, both earth and the balloon aren't moving. The balloon drifts away due to the wind, but if there was no wind blowing, the balloon would come down even more near to the starting point. The only deviation it then experiences is the fact that it covers less distance at 1000 km/h because the circle it travels along is larger than the surface of the earth.
