Airlayering & grafting will produce a plant which will fruit faster than a plant just grown from seed & those two methods produces a plant which will bear fruit true to seed

Dr.SP, airlayering in mangoes is seen to be done directly and also with root stok. Can you pls expain in which situation either of the two processes are used/preferred. Also what is the advantage of Rootstalk AL over direct AL technique without rootstalk. One more query, where is V grafting preferred on sapling from seed over side by side graft. In bali side by side graft is used more while in indonesia and thailand side by side graft is used. What is the reason ?

Airlayering with one or more rootstocks generally produces a stronger tree since it will have a tap root or tap roots depending upon how many root stocks are applied these bigger stronger & more agressive roots will provide the tree with better & stronger anchorage in the soil to face harsh weather like typhoons huricanes flooding etc plus these tap roots being more agressive (than the more fiberous roots of the standard airlayering) would naturally be able to grow deeper in the soil in search of water & other nutients so this characteristic makes it more tolerant in periods of drought.

Yes that's a draw back with an airlayered tree no tap root for better & stronger anchorage in the ground. The grafted tree is stronger in general. However if you plant the airlayered tree behind some kind of windbreak to protect & sheild it from the full force of the winds that would help alot in its survival.
