297th!! Well, maybe not that many. Hey, anyone can be 1st, you know! LOL! That is a beautiful piece, Phil. You never cease to amaze, buddy. With all the sharpening you were doing that must be incredibly hard wood. You certainly showed who the boss is, my friend. It didn't really have a chance once you got it into your shop. Great work! Funny you say that, Samuel. When I was 69 years old, I decided to get into woodturning. I bought my lathe and then wondered if I would get my money's worth out of it before I croaked. I have! I'm so glad I have it and I'm so glad I took up this hobby. It gets me out of bed each day! 😊

the Oberti family grew olives in the central valley of California for many years... in the 40's thru 70's the Oberti Olive company provided 75% of the olives and olive oil consumed in the U.S.A. and shipped there produces around the world.... during the 70's and 80's I saw those trees dozed down and burned... now as a turner the memory makes me want to cry... those old trees were quite beautiful...

I just love how you always make sure that mother nature is your most important thing that you capture. I'm always looking forward to your next piece of work. I myself will always take another wood turners artwork for reference to how I would challenge myself for my next project to make sure that something is left of nature. Sometimes it doesn't happen and you end up with a salad bowl. Then again some of those kind people want a fancy salad bowl. Either way happy turning my friend and it's awesome to see you in your element again. 😍 now it's time for me to get back to work.

Had to work hard to get that piece of olive wood looking nice, Phil. When I start roughing a piece like that, I use a well-swept back 5/8 bowl gouge and lower the handle so you get an easier slicing cut. I see you're using HSS bowl gouges. You'd be surprised at how much better an M2 or better yet an M42 or CP10V gouge stays sharp longer on hardwood. I love breaking the turning rules of leaving piths in. Those branches make the piece. Great job! Thanks for sharing.
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop

My gouges are M2 steel and cost 1/4 that of M42. I can sharpen in less than a minute. Works for me, Greg! 😍
@JamesBondDZero7Mi6
@JamesBondDZero7Mi6 Жыл бұрын
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Get's the job done. I keep a few M42 gouges nearby for finish cuts. The price is steep so I don't want to waste them. My worst gouge is a Hurricane. It's just HSS and not M2. I question if the heat treatment was done correctly. It seems to not hold an edge very long at all. Happy turning.

That one grain pattern on the outside is kind of oval made me think of that ultrasound of the baby inside the mom womb. On the inside, where a split is hold it upwards I thought I caught a glimpse of what could be the form of an angel in the grain. I didn’t get a clear look like I wanted to but the bowl turned out gorgeous. I know it’s gonna take a lot of practice but I truly hope one day. I am at least half as good as you are. Wow so so so beautiful. Olive wood is one of my very favorites. BTW there are olive orchards all over California. Even wild olive and the bushy Russian olive. The climate is very similar to Spain and Italy so you can bet we got that going on. I've got some Greek ancestry so I've always been a little partial to olives. I'm growing my own little baby tree now actually. Thank you so much for this video. This bowl is so beautiful. It should be an art piece but if you have a home full of art pieces It could also make a yarn bowl. No matter what it's gorgeous. Thank you so much for the videos and for keeping the wood and the tree an essential part of your turnings. I especially liked the story about hiding marbles and proof of life. Phil is the one that recommended you to me and I love his resin work but the life of the tree is the root of my obsession with wood turning. Don't ever stop keeping the bark. It will be a sad day if we lose the live edge. And thank you for recommending Kimsey I love his fearless approach to any shape he's determined to keep the natural form alive.

Hi Phil so good to hear your voice I hope this finds you well. That olive wood is so beautiful. A bit heavy on your tools but well worth the sharpening. I agree from the front it does look like a giant ants head that’s been hit with a big axe lol 🤣🤣🤣 take care and see you next time my friend 👍👍👍😊😊😊♥️

GORGEOUS!!! FYI - We have lots of Olive trees in California. I don’t know for a fact, but I’d be willing to bet that as the Catholic Missions were built they planted Olive trees as well.

This Saturday a crew is coming to cut a widow maker limb off of a Wild Cherry tree, cut down one Live Oak that died of old age and four widow maker limbs from two giant Water Oaks. Living in hurricane prone Florida I have to keep up with the tree maintenance. Every three years the woods get a thorough checkout. Pay the price now to save paying a heck of a price for tree damage repairs after a bad storm. A lot of folks get complacent with tree maintenance and wind up with unhealthy trees. I'll be shipping all the downed wood up to your place so you will be able to do wood turning for another 50 years or more. It should be about three to four tractor trailer flatbed loads. Your Olive wood bowl turned out beautiful.

What a gorgeous piece of nature. I agree this is much better than if it would be filled with epoxy. In my view, as long as it does not disintegrate it is better to trust mother nature, but when it gets risky, epoxy can do a good job.
