The B-52s are hardly ever flown. THAT's why they are still around. They have a fraction of the hours of an airliner, for instance. The oldest B-52 has around 22,000 hours. We have much younger 757s going past 100,000 hours.

@Leadfoot_P71 there is 1 bunk located on the upper deck below the left load bank circuit breaker panels. Food is usually box lunches from the in-flight kitchen who also provided jugs of water and coffee. There was a plug in hot cup heater and a plug in oven to heat food but these weren't used much when I was in the USAF. Some crew heated foil wrapped food on the cabin heater ducts which used bleed air from the engines. We didn't have female crew in the 1980s and the restroom facilities were a urinal that was on the lower deck just above the entrance hatch. It was a tube about the diameter of a 5 LB coffee can and about 3 feet tall. It was strapped to the rear bulkhead and was removed and dumped out behind the handstand where the plane was parked. There was a camp style toilet on the upper deck behind the EWO for other restroom needs but I never saw it used as the rule was regardless of your rank, if you use it, you clean it In short, the bomber was designed to complete the mission, not for crew comfort. I'm 6'2" and during a long flight, the only way to stretch your legs was to stand on the lower deck, right above the entry hatch in the ladderway that goes to the upper deck.

Not difficult but pointless. A B52 will be easily shot down in a combat zone like what happened in Vietnam. They can only operate in areas with no air defense. That’s why modern bombers are stealth.

The US did try with the B-1 Lancer but that was quickly retired due to heavy maintenance. Making a new B-52 would be extremely expensive and difficult since the USAF prefers quick low altitude bombing and high altitude precision bombing. The reason why the B-52 is still in service is because it’s a good platform for carpet bombing and also the only bomber to have an on-board jammer in its tail where the tail gunner used to be while being easy to maintain with modern equipment.

In the old Squadron Signal _in Action_ series I read about a B-52D that took off from Guam for the Linebacker II Operations, lost all four engines from the same side, jettisoned everything he could and was able to return for a safe landing, keeping the flaps up. Amazing.

Believe it or not, that B-52 used less fuel on that whole run than it would have if it had been fully combat loaded. It would have had to refuel 2-3 more times if it had been loaded for war.

The hypersonic missiles are better against static defenses/emplacements a B-52 in the air is obviously always on the move. It can also fly closer to the ground/water to avoid radar systems which point upward at the sky (obviously) to detect aircraft or airborne weapons.

Ukraine was unexpected, and no one in Western Europe wanted to get into a NATO conflict over it.
