Kevin Macpherson's Colorful World

Күн бұрын

Travel along on a virtual plein air painting adventure with artist, author and teacher, Kevin Macpherson, as he paints a luminous group of boats in a corner of the marina of Portofino, Italy. This video was filmed in Italy during happier, more carefree times, and we hope it will be like a mini-vacation while we're all stuck inside.
For artists, aspiring artists, weekend painters and anyone interested in landscape painting, this demo shows the whole process of painting a landscape outdoors, surrounded by Italian families and tourists enjoying a beautiful summer day along the Mediterranean coast.

Watched many times since you offered this mini vacation. Always love to watch you paint. The way you apply paint to the canvas is like no other artist. The results are always stunning. Took my first plein air workshop with you in 1997 at Greenville Arms in Greenville, NY. I've been painting plein air ever since. During COVID, (following your example of the pond) I started a series of the meadow that has developed on the land which I used to farm. So much to paint everyday different. Didn't do a painting everyday but I painted about 10 a month. I call it "MY PLACE, The Meadow Series". Thank you for your inspirations Kevin. You truly opened my eyes to the most rewarding way to being a painter.

Nice! Thank you, Kevin. You’re a virtuoso, using your loosely held baton to summon and capture the beautiful colors as you light up your canvas with generous amounts of paint. Your brushes dance with delight. This was an awakening for me to the joy and possibilities of expressing oneself in alla prima plein air painting. Wonderful.

Thank you, Kevin!!! Watched this again today and it did my heart so much good. During Covid, I spent months taking care of my Mom in hospice. After her passing, it took months before I could even think about painting, the joy had gone out of my life. Now, I paint because my parents were my greatest cheerleaders and I know the joy I get from it is just another sign that they are with me in the process. One of my bucket list goals is to one day afford one of your workshops as well as see Italy (I've never been out of the US). What a joy to be able to return to this video to be inspired!! Grazie!!

Crazy wonderful layers of paint! Watching one thick layer after another, piled on top was amazing. I was certain Kevin was 'overworking'; indeed I thought there were some nice passages that he simply covered over with more paint. Such masterful brushwork- he can create a thin, expressive line from a messy brush loaded with different colors. Most of the time, closeup I could not make out what he was doing. But take a step back, and it all comes together as a sparkling vibrant scene. I marvel at paintings that have different qualities at varied distances. Creating a beautiful scene, while letting paint be paint, is the ultimate success.

It's a very richly colored painting of boats in a harbour. At the time of day there was the gentle hustle and bustle of tourists, swimmers, boats people. How could he have introduced these to have pictured more completely the atmosphere of Portofino ? It looks very difficult.

Hi Marcella, Kevin says he doesn’t remember what brushes he used on this painting. He always changes his brushes through the years. He has a ton of brushes. Luckily I get the ones he doesn’t want anymore for when I paint. Kevin’s palette does change too. Usually titanium white, cadmium red or alizarin, ultramarine blue and Cadmium yellow light. He uses mostly Gamblin oil colors but he does switch to Sennelier oil paints.
