Examples of the UK moths caught over several nights with a ROBINSON Mercury Vapour MOTH TRAP - Privet Hawkmoth, Small & Large Elephant Hawkmoths, Lobster moths, Buff-tips, Peppered moths, prominent moths etc. This video should give viewers a good idea of the range of moths caught over several nights in spring & early summer. Even many of the smaller moths are intricately patterned or colourful & a joy to see in the trap. Almost every moth is released instantly the next morning after viewing. Exceptions are the occasional moth that I keep back for a couple of days in the hope that it may lay me some eggs. I enjoy rearing Hawkmoth caterpillars & allowing them to pupate - a large number of moths can then be released when they hatch the following spring. This is a great way to increase numbers of Hawkmoths generally, as very few caterpillars survive in comparison in the wild (predation by birds, parasitic wasps etc). I am rearing Privet Hawkmoth larvae at the moment & will post a separate video in the very near future.

Wow. Great video, i really enjoyed the commentary about your childhood and things as i could relate to it. I set up my moth trap tonight for the first time this year and i hope to find some interesting moths in the morning. One of my most enjoyable experiences was when i raises about 10 elephant hawkmoths from eggs and eventually released them as adults. Anyway goodbye

Thanks! We get Eyed, Poplar & Lime Hawkmoths most years too. Keep an eye out for my Privet Hawkmoth caterpillar rearing video in the near future - some are starting to get really large already so it shouldn't be too much longer.

Hi, Thanks for your comment! I have had way more success in the past but I didn't film it because I didn't have a KZfaq channel back then! There are so many cool UK species - they are just so much smaller than tropical species & so are often overlooked. Some are equally colourful or patterned, just tiny in comparison to those found in rainforests. Thanks for watching my channel - it is TRULY Appreciated!!!

Wow! I love your videos! I admire your passion and enthusiasm : ) Just wondering, are you an entomologist? I'm trying to make my own Robinson style moth trap and have a few questions for you - How long do you have the light on for? - Is a mercurcy vapour bulb absolutely necessary or would a regular LED lightbulb do? - Also, what does the box it's connected to do? Would the trap work without it?

Hi, Thanks for your comment! I am only an amateur entomologist - I have kept insects from a very early age & always been fascinated by them. The Mercury Vapour Bulb is the essential part of a good moth trap - an LED light may attract the odd one or two moths but a MV bulb is so bright & at the right wavelength of light that moths find irresistible! You can just have your light on for a couple of hours after dusk or you can leave it on overnight to catch the maximum number of moths. I think the white box on a Robinson Trap is a regulator for the Bulb to prevent power surges. The bulbs are really expensive & are not something you would want to blow after only a couple of times using it!!! Good luck if you make a Moth Trap - send me another message to let me know how effective it is. Thanks for watching my channel - it is TRULY Appreciated!!!

I am terrified of moths lol but these moth trap videos are really interesting and it is amazing to see how many species of moth there are in the UK. The range of moth species in the uk is very diverse!

Hi, Thanks for the comment! Yes, there are so many & my video hardly shows any really. Although many moths in tropical countries tend to be bigger, ours can be just as brightly coloured, metallic, interestingly shaped etc, it is just that because they are smaller, they aren't noticed as much - same goes with UK beetle species - get them under a microscope & they are spectacular. Thanks for watching my video (especially as you are terrified of moths) it is TRULY Appreciated!!! Check out some of my other UK wildlife videos if you get a chance - there are some from my pond, nature walks etc. If you like unusual animals, Herbie is my three-banded armadillo & the love of my life - there are some videos showing how affectionate he is.

@@aliceosborne3974 Rearing up the Privet Hawk Moth Caterpillars was fun but they are such greedy feeders - I was getting through a bin bag full of Privet every day at the end!!!

Did you ever capture a Jersey tiger moth? I saw one of these on a wall at Guys hospital in London where I worked at the time and had never seen a moth like it anywhere else?!

Hi, thanks for leaving a comment! I remember seeing them a few times as a child & I used to find their large, hairy caterpillars from time to time. I understand they are pretty rare now, so you were really lucky to see one. They are such striking moths - gorgeous! I've never had one in my moth trap, over all the years I have done it. Check out my video on rearing Privet Hawkmoth caterpillars, if you haven't seen it already - I reared over 100 of them this year & they are spectacular & huge - they were eating a bin bag full of privet a day at the end before they pupated! Thanks for watching my channel - it is TRULY Appreciated!!!

Hi, those were the good old days! I remember catching a slowworm on the school field & keeping it in my PE kit bag - I was worried the teachers would make me release it if I told them, so I kept it carefully hidden for the day until I could get it safely home & find it some small white slugs to eat! Thanks for watching my channel - it is TRULY Appreciated!!!
