We're all ready for the gardening season to come, but there are a few things we need to prepare for first! Such as ordering your seeds! If you haven't already ordered your seeds, we highly encourage you to do so soon. But how do you read those seed packets when it comes time to start your seeds indoors or plant them in the garden?

I'd like to lean to how to harvest seeds from the plants you grow. Our grandparents and great-grandparents didn't order seeds every year.

There is a great book called seed to seed. It tells you everything you need to know on saving seed.

It's not difficult if you understand a few key points. I'd start by searching "open pollinated" and "heirloom" varieties of the foods you eat...many varieties like French Breakfast radishes, and Straight Eight cucumbers, Beefsteak tomatoes aren't labled as "heirloom or open pollinated" but will produce a "true to type seed"... meaning, if the pollen exchange is protected, then the seed they produce will produce a plant identical to the parent plant. Whereas "hybrid and improved" varieties will produce seed from the parent genetics so you can't be certain what you'll get from the next generation of seed. To protect the pollen exchange I hand pollinate from one closed bloom to the next with toothpicks and Qtips, then protect that blossom with organza bags that I tie to the plant. Once the fruit forms and there's no chance of cross pollination I leave the bow and cut off the bag. Those fruits will be left on the plant until it's 100% mature. Anything with a mucus wrapped seed (tomatoes, melons, cucumber, etc.) I scoop the seed into a glass jar, add a tiny bit of water and let the mucus layer mold and the seeds fall to the bottom. Then I strain them, and dry them and bag them in paper bags. Seeds in pods (peas, beans, Okra, etc) I let them dry on the plant. Herbs, onions, carrots... I use larger organza bags and protect 2 bundles of flowers before they open making sure they're pointing down so the bag is actually catching the pollen. I also protect from rain. Once I see pollen in both bags... I switch the bags and give it a shake to hand pollinate. I leave the bags on the flower heads and they will catch the tiny seeds. Store seeds in a cool dry place away from sunlight and pests. Photo organizers make nice seed vaults. I always mark what generation I'm saving Gen #1-4 and the year, I reserve a few seeds from previous generations in case I have a crop failure or notice a quality I don't like. For instance if Generation #3 Beefsteak seed gives tiny fruits then I won't seed save from that plant .. the next season I'll plant from Gen#1 and Gen #2 seed and I'll polinate Gen#1 to Gen #1, Gen #2 to Gen #2, and Gen#1 to Gen #2, giving me 3 fruits to save seed from and I will lable them according to their parent plants (Gen#1-1, Gen#2-2, Gen#1-2) then the next season... whatever seed gives me the desired fruit will become the new Gen#3. So... start with buying the appropriate seed variety, protect the blooms and hand pollinate, properly harvest and process the seed depending on the type of seed, then dry and store properly making sure you label appropriately. What's really fun is hybridizing your own plants and stabilizing your own varieties of plants over time. Locally stabilized seed is so much stronger than the seed you get from somewhere else! Do y’all have a video about your journey to this point? I’d love to hear if you started learning these skills as children or has it all been as adults? How do you have time for gardening and cooking with your large family and all the other projects you have going on? You can use little tea bags, or larger bags for fruit flies, to keep birds/bugs off your seeds.

@mariatorres9789 🤔 on tea bags. I wonder if a piece of tp would deter them. Doing a large area of sunflowers with individually wrapped tp seeds would be cheaper than tea bags, and I can keep them for my tea. I do use netting when seeding smaller areas, and it does work. Thank you for the tea bag idea.

Would love a physical copy of your magazine, people might be willing to pay more to have one. I am amazed at the price of magazines now in stores, $10+ and that's only for ONE magazine. I would rather pay for a book ( maybe a yearly compilation of all/most content, hint, hint, lol) or a subscription. Not a homesteader, but a dreamer. Since nearly everything we do must be free of cost (not work), any learning acquired must be free to us also. Having said this, the best thing I learned recently was from STS free class with Maureen Diaz's sourdough bread making class. I finally got a nice loaf and delicious too. My husband, who did not want sourdough, and is not even a bread eater, loves it. He keeps praising it! I made a cinnamon and raisin with the same recipe that tastes like cinnamon buns. This bread has improved his digestion and bowel movements. Thank you as it took so long trying to figure out how to make good bread without a properly functioning kitchen. 😊

Sure do wish there were more plants and flowers on it, but it definitely has the majority of garden plants and has been so helpful! Appreciate this episode so much as I am still on the steep learning curve of gardening. Some of my adventures have been successful, some not so much, but always learning. It’s a journey, no matter how long you’ve been gardening, right? :-)

From NC And have started my summer garden. I so love getting the garden going. Got root vegetables in the ground. Had added my last yard clippings and shredded leaves to the garden and ashes from the fireplace and lime. Did till the garden 6x to really mix everything together and into the soil. Hoping to have a large production. Plan to learn about canning this season. It's a 30x15 garden. Will add corn, cucumbers, squash and watermelon in the following weeks.

Saved as many seeds as I could (first time), bought my first batch of seeds for '23 shortly after completing the harvest for '22, bought from another source about a month later...learned a small seed source was liquidating inventory & closing so bought from there...ordered bare root berry bushes just this week...participating in an online seed exchange, should be getting those in the mail in 2-3 weeks...going to take advantage of (and donate seed to) the nearest seed library when it's available in March...getting some medicinal herb plants from a friend when spring arrives. I'm pretty well set...for a beginner gardener...hopefully will get better about saving more & buying less as time passes.

Josh can you do a video on winter livestock watering? Keeping my livestock watered in the winter is always too much of an adventure, especially when we get below -40. My Friday "frost free" faucet actually froze this year. I'd be interested to see what tricks you've learned.

I've pruned my apple trees started cauliflower broccoli and cabbage by seed and have beets growing in my raised bed that my husband put a storm door on with brackets and a handle.. I'm in Virginia I freeze my seeds and they come up every year.

It us also goid to learn how to collect your own seeds and some plants you can use organza bags on to collect the seeds for you. Just be sure it is a variety that makes viable seeds. Always have it where 2 of them go to seed, preferably your healthiest looking plants.

Zone 7 here in middle TN. Have all my seed and due to grow room being changed into a nursery for our first great grandchild, I'll be getting tomatoes and peppers from local garden store. So, which comes first, the new baby or planting the garden? Our's is due May 7, so the garden will come first. God bless and keep growing.

I had a grandma that went thru the Great Depression and she was always telling us children to save and not waste. She literally drilled it into my head! It has really helped me survive in my life. I remember her telling me to cut off the buttons on my clothes if we would throw them out, they did that in the Depression. They threw nothing out. She held on to the old ways for a long time, like I remember she had a barrel that she caught rainwater. We would go swimming in it. I love to listen to Mary's Nest. Thanks for all you do for us.

There are a couple of tasks that my husband and I are trying to do now, that we could use help with. How to take a soil sample to send it in for testing. How to decide where to place a greenhouse on our property based on the sun? I think I saw Eliot Coleman address this a couple of decades ago, but cannot find it now. How to prune an old plum tree for consistent fruit production? How to decide the best method of food preservation for each food item, that results in the highest quality food product. IE: sweet potatoes. Canning vs dehydrating? Garden zones: temperatures vs daylight hours, etc. 8b in Western Washington is not the same as 8b in Alabama. Just a few ideas for things I would like help with. Thanks!

Good morning. I don't have seeds a year ahead but I did get an emergency supply that I can keep in the freezer. It is good for about 5 or 10 years. (I forget how many years.) So, that's better than nothing. But I have been wanting to order next year's seeds right now. So, I guess that's a new goal for me to do.

Some are saying not a good idea to leave in freezer. So I started vacuum-sealing & leaving in a cool dark place for long term storage plus I bought a box of freedom seeds for long term storage. I will take seeds I have stored in freezer & see how they perform. God bless.

I’m also in north Idaho 7b. I understand about the dates of starting seeds indoors and transplanting outdoors but would like to know when I could transplant the seed starts to a cold frame in the garden. Do I need to wait until the transplant date to put them in the cold frame?

We bought a whole hog and I asked for the lard. I got 3 small bags. Then I saw your lard video and wondered did I get ripped off? 3 bags looked so small compared to what I saw u had.

I'm thinking of trying indoor growing with lights. Assuming this means I can grow year round.

Yes, but you get your real nutrients from the ground, so instead of hydroponics, try a consolidated small pot arrangement. Your leafy veggies & sprouts can easily last you all winter, right on the counter in a window. I have a friend that uses a fish tank w/ small fish, and grows his Wheatgrass on the top, and it's fed by the fish poo. He juices everyday.

@@lylecoglianese1645 They started off talking about lard and how long Lard lasted. That is why I made the remarks I did if you noticed I asked the seed question first then about the fats. I thought this was an open forum. I didn't know you can not ask anything else. Or talk about anything else then. If this is the rules please put it in the description. I don't know about a duck shortage. But there certainly is something going on with the chickens. And I don't know about next year if there's going to be a egg shortage or chicken shortage. But I have ordered egg layers for the coming spring.

@@lylecoglianese1645 yes I seen the sarcasm. I guess I was just trying to explain why I was asking about the fats. And at Christmas time I could hardly find any eggs. So I don't know what next year's going to bring that chicken prices and egg prices are ridiculous. But that's off-topic too.

@@lylecoglianese1645 I also am sorry. It just seems like so many people are getting mean and you were trying to be funny and I took it like you thought I was unintelligent. I have few companies of seeds that I go to but I'm always looking for better because I never have seed domain other than. When I was growing up there was never. You can't control seeds they for word for body. At wasn't until did Gino macino. Started panting their seeds. And there are big farmers and ranchers who lost everything because they were being sued because it cross-contaminated with their family heirloom seeds and it became theirs because there was contamination. They were checking to court and I lost everything.

I was just wondering if you could tell me when I do the hydrated lime in the eggs is it supposed to settle after a little bit?

Yes, this is completely normal. The solution of lime to water is heavier than necessary, so some settling is normal. You do not need to worry about stirring it back into the water solution.

What are your thoughts on planting beans between corn for the beans to vine on the corn stalks versus trellis

I will share my thoughts: I like to give the corn a head start of a week or two, so the stalks have a bit of growth before the beans start climbing. I usually plant beans every other row of corn. I also plant squash around the perimeter of the corn & bean patch, which helps keep critters out. I like to plant a couple rows of sunflowers in between varieties of corn.

There was one type of berry I wanted to plant but didn't know if it was hardy to my zone (4A); I ran a search and it said "4-8". When I searched for sources most of them said hardy to zone 5...one said zone 6...one said zone 3...I'm assuming that was varietal differences. As I started checking what was available, pricing, etc. I made a point of buying from a nursery in a northern state...the best price I'd found was from a nursery in GA, but what are the chances this apparently not-too-hardy bush from GA would do well in MN? Unfortunately, I took a closer look today and found the location of the nursery I bought from is on the border of 5B/6A...I'm just south of the border between 3B/4A. Now I'm wondering if they'll survive here...but I'm going to try because 1-I really want to grow them, 2-this is still the most northerly source I've found, 3-the website says they're hardy to zone 4, and 4-they'll be planted south of my house with a solid wood fence several feet to their west, so they'll be quite well protected from NW winds...but there's nothing I can do about the -20 to -25 we routinely get, so it's possible I've wasted my money.

@@nicholehillabush7211 The one I really wanted was black raspberries, since we can't grow blackberries here. Taste won't be the same, but I'm thinking nutrients would be similar. And, since they had them, I decided to buy some haskaps too! I've got yellow raspberries out back; the red didn't survive the first winter, so I'll try a different variety next year (if I buy) or this fall (if I get freebies from my buddy).

I don't believe the oven works. I've experimented and it seems the lowest setting (170 on mine) is too high.

Keep watching for small ones at thrift stores. People clean out their unused kitchen equipment often right after New Year's or during spring cleaning. Or ask in Facebook garage sale groups. I run across several a year.
