I'm the same I don't like to order seeds from companies that don't put pictures on the packages, las year I ordered from pinetreee seeds and their packaging has no pictures I ended up cutting pictures from some of my old seed catalogs and sticking the pictures on the seed packets.

You are absolutely correct about Bakers Creek about not giving enough information. Since I'm pretty good with growing seeds. Johnny Seeds takes a lot of my money because of their great information and germinate rates. My first time ordering seeds I spent a lot of money on people just selling seeds with no information. I almost gave up that year. But I listened to a lot of people that gives you information about different companies selling seeds and the good ones. I could say I rather as much information on the package than pretty pictures. When you spend time on seeds, soil for seeding, heating mats, lights and most of all my time. I would spend the money. Every gardener is different. I don't have patience for bad seeds. It's good to shop with different companies to see which one with the best seeds. Bakers Creek so far is one of the best besides Johnny seeds.

I’m going to do a small order from them this year and do a side by side growing experiment with multiple seed companies. Johnnys has a huge variety of colors that I don’t see anywhere else. I literally have a list wrote down of which ones I want and haven’t pulled the trigger yet. You have pushed me over the line and I will do it. Their seed packet info looks amazing. Thank you for the great and convincing info.

Their seeds use to only be a dollar a pack (with half off on season end sales). I bought almost everything they had one year...and more post; but as I examined my seed packs through my growing seasons, I discovered many packets were far less than the number of seeds and even some packets completely empty, but sealed. They fixed a few...(but with growing pains, got a bit grumpy and left my large losses completely unresolved)...so sadly I eventually found other fabulous seed sources.
@gardenandgrease

Which seed company are you talking about? Seeds and such? Because some of those packets were poorly sealed and it seamed like there weren’t many seeds in the packet.

I bought a black light flash light after I had a hornworm attack. I only found 1 but I think the birds found the others and ate them. I keep a birdbath in my garden and bird feeders nearby to attract them and so far they have helped me out 😁 plus the birds make the yard sound so beautiful. Thank you for sharing

MIGardener packets are $2/pkg, I agree with the package information which was one of their main goals; affordable seeds and necessary information to be successful in growing those seeds into full maturity. I separate my seeds by cool vs warm weather first; then moist stratify vs dry stratify vs direct sow vs warm moist stratify 2kws then cold moist stratify (chamomile etc.) vs dry freeze 1 day then soak 1 day then direct sow (catnip) vs soak over night then direct sow, Ugh! This is why I have garden planners; one from MIGardener and 1 TN which I completed myself. I have ordered the Etsy shop Blind Pig and the Acorn (youtube Celebrating Appalachia) calendar like I used to see on my Grandparents 400 acre farm kitchen cabinet. Pappy was a Rohrer;) I love the 5 year journal!!! I'd love to hear about your garden plan for this year. Decisions, decisions. Do you preserve? If so, how? Suscribed and shared.

Thank you subscribing & this great comment. Honestly I’m starting so many seeds this year & I don’t have enough lights in the house for all of them so I’m going to winter sow a bunch which simplifies the stratification issue. We are putting in a ton of new garden beds this year and turning the front yard into new cottage garden so we need a ton of plants… need… 🤣🤣 want all the plants 🤣 preserving: canning, pickling, drying. I want to get brave and ferment… maybe this year. Thank you so much
@gardenandgrease

I also freeze a bunch because I get super busy with family, work and the garden that things get away from me and I can toss in the freezer until I have time to do something with them. I looked up the blind pig comment, I love finding recipes from Appalachian channels and websites. Very cool.

In my photo storage I have my seeds cataloged by types. My tomatoes are done by determinate and indeterminate. I have a calendar marked with post it as to when to plant what. But I don't have a bunch of seeds. I may only have 5-6 photo boxes filled with seeds. I'm just starting out, because I need to cut my fresh food bill. The rabbit who lives in my daughter's room costs a fortune to feed.

I feel the same about Seeds and Such. Not only do you get zero information on how to grow, but if they are having a sale, you may have to wait 2 or 3 weeks to get your order. I want to try MIGardener this year. Most of my seeds come from Baker Creeks or Botanical Interests.

Yeah I’ve made the mistake… and keep making it, of buying seeds that are “new” in the catalogs or look really cool. Then they do horribly or get diseases really bad. The tried and true seeds that have been used for years tend to do best. Thank you.

I have a similar complaint about Seeds and such. I hate that there’s no information or even a picture. I did place a second order because they had some flower seeds I wanted & couldn’t find anywhere else and they had a sale but my debit card flagged them as a fraudulent charge and that was a mess. Over a week later they still haven’t shipped so we’ll see…it will definitely be my last order 🙄

@@gardenandgrease Yes I try.. Poppies are very easy to save seeds from.. I’m taking seeds from store bought tomatoes.. peppers, chilis and last year I got a pretty good variety of both chilis and tomatoes from ordinary food stores.. But I live in north Sweden, with 3 months of summer and 6 months of cold winter.. this winter it’s been up to -40.. need to start with my plants as early as January.. If I want things to bring fruit before autumn.. because we can have snow in September.. 🫣

@@themischievoustwo6594 Our last frost is April 21 and first freeze about October 15, about 6 months. But our winters generally don't dip into single digit Fahrenheit for too long, but stay in the teens and 20s at night. In years past i'v started everything indoors in grow light area but this year I'm going to try winter sowing for a bunch of stuff. The cool thing about peppers that I noticed last year was I had peppers growing on my plants indoors 🤣 Fingers crossed we all have a great growing year.

@@gardenandgrease Wow! We can’t even be sure of the last frost in June.. Some summers we have had snow in the middle of June.. Not the normal thing, but it can be pretty cold. If you have good plant lamps, you can have salad in hydroponic pots, though.. It works, but the leaves get really thin and not very lush as if you had planted them outside..
