Yep! One of my favorites are the Greek yogurt cups. I use a soldering iron to melt holes, and use a strip if T-shirt fabric to make a wick. They fit perfectly in a solo cup to make self watering seedling planters.

Hi Mmmm, when a seed sharing event comes up, suggest bringing cleaned up extra gardening. supplies , you don't need but someone else does. Help a beginner gardener with some cheaper supplies instead of being a bug n dust magnet in your shed or home. Spring cleaning goes with Spring planting. Peace to you and yours

This year I'm starting seeds in K-cups. I already compost the grounds and filters. I drilled and cleaned a 1/4" hole it the bottom and cut along 2/3 of the circumference of the bottom. The tags are too tall and don't let the dome on on the trays like you have. I write what the plant is on the side of the cup with a sharpie. When I transplant the seedlings to the next size container, I can push up on the bottom to free the "root ball", then send the cup to recycling. So far (about 10 days) it's much cleaner. It's also easy to put the sprout cups in another tray for light and away from the heat pad.

Something I am now finding out using my own materials for seed start and soil mixes is keeping them moist. The biggest benefit in using leaf mold, aged compost and worm castings is the biology in these materials. If allowed to dry out, many of those microbes will either form cysts or die off. Started storing materials in 25 gallon grow bags, but they were drying out, so everything went into garbage cans. Then I was concerned about potential anaerobic conditions, so ended up drilling holes along the sides, bottom and lids. For plant tags, I use vinyl window blinds. They even work great for removing seedlings from seed trays. They are free if you can find them on a curb, or are so cheap at big box stores, you could have a supply for years for around $8.00. Stay Well Gardener Scott!!!

I appreciate you make it clear that you don't really need all those things because one of the things that stopped me for a while from starting to garden was the cost of buying all the things "needed". Once I figured out I could start with recycled containers and that my only real expense should be the dirt, I took the leap. Now that I'm addicted I have more stuff of course lol

I gave my mother my small heat mat, and now use a single 20x40 heating pad. I have about ten 12 pack starting cells with trays, five 10x20 trays with enough 4 pack cells to fill them, and larger 6 pack cells to fill two trays. It is more than enough for my garden, and it all gets used. In the next few weeks, I will be putting my polytunnel greenhouse into service.

Thank You for making me realize that I don’t have more excess gardening stuff than anyone else. Lol. I guess we all learn as we go. I just got “back” into indoor seed starting after many years. I am now concentrating on investing in more durable seed starting supplies that can be used more than one year. After a while it’s good to make the process as easy and efficient as possible.I read on a blog that we40 will remove the black marker from your plastic plant tags.

Thanks Gardner Scott for doing these videos. Although I have been gardening off and on for the past few years. I've always purchased my plants from a big box store. However, this year with your instruction, I've set up a seed starting area in a corner of my garage. When I first started to look into this I was overwhelmed by the process. However, with your videos, and I've watched a lot of your videos, I can do this without breaking the bank and not make too many mistakes. Thanks!

🤔😅OK, I do not feel bad, now. I'm looking for new shelves for the garage for my stuff. Some years, I manage to use almost all of it, and others, I wonder why I have it all. Now I ask-do I NEED this, would be nice to have, or do I just want it?... Most of the time, it's the latter. Scott, I chuckled when you showed your grafting kit. I still remember the day my Pappy taught me how to graft an orange tree. He took out his pocket knife, cut the branch to be grafted, made a cut into the side of the tree, and wrapped it with electrical tape. He was a succeffully fruit farmer, until he was well into his 80's. Getting knowledge and understanding of a plant's, is FREE, and then you will know whether the gadgets are necessary. 😄Thanks for this video! I feel better, now. 😆

More lights that I need but do need to get a better larger heat mat with temp control. And some plastic 3/4” cell trays for smaller starts. Here’s hoping that 2023 will be a better garden year.

I use a china marker/ grease pencil to label my plant tags. At the end of the season, if using plastic tags, I just wash with hot, soapy water, and they are ready for next season. I get more than 2 seasons from them. I also use food containers to start my seeds. It's all about reusing! I'm looking into LED lighting because the area in the house I use to start my seeds doesn't get enough natural light.

I found that rubbing alcohol will erase marker off those plastic plant markers. My starting equipment is pretty basic. I have tried the expensive things and found they aren't any better than the expensive things. I had some of those blinds made up of plastic slats and removed them and took the slats out and cut them up for plant markers. I also make my own seed tapes from TP strips and school glue. I do this in the winter while watching TV in the evenings.

I finally broke down and purchased seed starting trays this year because....toys, yeah. Funny, though, the volunteer seedlings coming up where I mulched with rough compost are SO much bigger and healthier than those "official" seeds planted in labeled cells using sifted seed starter, babied indoors under grow lights! If I only knew what that tomato and squash variety was....it will be fun finding that out, as well as whether the fast start results in stronger plants for the whole growing season. I re-use take-out Chinese chopsticks to scoop out and gently guide in the seedling into its next pot. It works like a charm. Thank you for the tour of your seed starting station, and teaching us about the "basics" options that work just as well.

I use beverage containers with the straight sides and paint them because roots don't like light. This season I had milk crates and putting in my beverage containers into them and can dip the crates into a tub of water and then drain into the water for about a hour to drain. They are big enough I don't need to transplant and my tiny seedlings doesn't get disturb or damaged. I have a old egg flipper that I removed the flipper and slightly bent the steel flat shaft it handy to plant any size seed or pulling tiny seedlings 🌱 Thanks Gardener Scott Just enter my Black Krim into the single seed contest going to grow it into a last season sunflower root ball no tilt method and compare to 2 other methods. Thanks for encouraging me to learn from my garden. My handle and shaft from the egg flipper handle my seed dropping much better than my old man thick fingers. Made my seive to thin down my peatmoss for seedlings mixture.

I make plant tags by cutting cottage cheese cartons vertically with scissors, then cutting around the bottom. You get 20 to 25 labels from one carton. I mark them with a fine (not extra-fine) black sharpie. This lasts as far into the season as I need the labels. I start most seeds in vermiculite in yogurt cups. You can often use the vermiculite that remains after you transplant the young seedlings a second or even third time if you heat it to kill pathogens and leftover seeds. Seedlings in vermiculite are very easy to separate without root damage if you float them apart under water, and you don't miss the small, late germinating ones. I reuse the yogurt cups for surplus transplants that I give away. There's a lot of single use food packaging out there that can be used as planting trays, or even humidity domes. Plastic bags are good for keeping humidity around germinating seeds and cuttings, too.

Whenever you get around to using that grafting tool, you will find your better off without it. A pair of pruners and a sharp knife/box cutter works better than the grafters. I started grafting a few years ago and it is super easy and super fun! I highly recommend getting into it. The season for grafting is coming soon. I think I recall you having a small orchard, I started by just swapping scions with the trees I already had. Now I've got 4, 4 in one citrus trees, all the same fruits, different roots. And I just ordered new scions online since I couldn't find any locals willing to trade with me.

I love this video! Yes, I agree I don't need the "stuff" but it usually stick to me when shopping in the garden shop (they must have this special glue). As an analist working in a lab, I also like to experiment....bad combination. My to coppers to this "stuff" and keeping things moneywise in check. I'm very concerned about the worl plastic consumption and I tried to avoid using it whenever possible (and reuse it as much as possible if I buy it) I bought this tool that can make cups out of newspapers. Advantage is, no waste, no plastic, no cleaning at the end. Disadvantages is you have to be able to get your hands on newspapers and not all have, it's also labor intensive and might not be very suitable for hundreds of seed (but I usually do it with my kids that love to roll the paper and give it a good "stamp"). I also found that putting labeltags in jar with water and a bit of bleach overnight erases the text, but it might (and will) depend on the eraser.

About 40 years ago I built a 3 tier 4 foot long plant rack from scrap lumber I picked up and some fluorescent fixtures some friends found in a dumpster. I'm still using that rack, although I've had to replace some of the fixtures with other scavenged ones. Other than replacing the tubes as they burn out, this rack has cost me almost nothing and has produced thousands of transplants. I use mostly cool white tubes, 40 watt if I can still find them. Even though 34 watt tubes look the same to the human eye, the plants need all the watts they can get, and color temperature isn't very important at the seedling stage. I'm not particularly handy - I have to curl my right hand fingers and stick my thumb out to figure out which way to turn taps and screws - but I was able to build and use this thing. If I can, so can almost anybody!

I put T1 - T10 on plastic labels to label the tomato varieties I grow, so they can be reused indefinitely, using a water and fade resistant garden marker. Then I keep a cheat sheet on my phone that maps the numbers to varieties for that year. The numbers can be grouped, so T1-T4 are red beefsteaks, T5-T8 are orange/yellow tomatoes, T9-T10 are cherries, etc. The number ranges give me a quick idea of what kind of variety each is, and I always have my phone with me to translate …. until it becomes ingrained and recognizable later in the season. I do the same for pepper varieties, P1 - P10. Maybe H1 - H10 for the hot peppers. Thanks for the behind the scenes look, GS.

O my yes, stuff grows over time. I am only going into my 5th gardening season and I already have all that I need to start seeds. Hopefully that will make me think twice the next time I see a gadget for sale. Strangely the most useful stuff like tongue depressors, 3'' pots, pruners, gloves, etc comes from the dollar store. It doesnt cost a lot, but seems to grow faster. I just added anther led light setup, mainly because I am overwintering some plants in my seed starting room and I needed another lighted space to free up seed starting area. Yes more stuff. But thankfully the room is small so there isnt a lot of room to add more. Stuff multiplying isnt just in seed starting. I now have a collection of hand trowels. I wasnt going to buy any more but got two more for Christmas.

So those 72 cell trays made by Jiffy, the Hexpro cells, are decent enough as they come. However, with the price of trays, it has been more efficient for me to buy that kit and use the bottom watering tray and humidity dome as trays for basically every type of pot/cup/can/etc. 1020 trays are pricey and I can get one of those hexpro kits for like $11, which is essentially two trays, if you use the humidity dome as a tray.

When you put the new seedlings that have sprouted from your seed starter mix under grow lights, how do you get them to grow the first set of leaves without nutrition. My seeds have had the cotyledons for a few weeks and aren't getting the 1st set of leaves.
@GardenerScott

Nature provides everything within the seed for the first leaves. If they don't develop it could be the mix is too cold, the seed was sown too deep, or the lower soil dried out. Some seeds take longer than others so they may show leaves soon.

Hi @GardenerScott, Excellent video! Over about the past year, I've adopted a lot of very similar seed start practices to what what you're showing in this video (from watching a bunch of your other videos). I've learned a lot from you and have quickly become kind of good at it. I see you've got a bottle of the Fox Farm grow big liquid fertilizer at around 00:05:37 . I'm experimenting with the Fox Farm trio myself (Big Bloom, Grow Big, Tiger Bloom) for the indoor plants that I'm starting. How much have you used their liquid fertilizers? Have/do you use their liquid fertilziers for seedlings or small transplants? What kind of results have you gotten? Also, how do you feel about transplanting all vegetable plants rather than direct sowing? I know certain vegetables don't transplant well, but it seems like as long as you don't disturb the roots, a gardener could successfully transplant anything without too much difficulty. Is that true? I ask because I strongly dislike direct sowing plants then having to go back and thin the plants out once they mature.

Hi, Donny. I use little fertilizer. For seedlings, if I use it, I dilute it by at least half. Because I add nutrients to my potting mix, I only use liquid fertilizer if the plants will be in the pots longer than expected before transplant. Most plants can be transplanted, but so many grow well from seed. Consider making seed tape where you can choose the spacing, lay the tape, and not worry about thinning.

@@GardenerScott Seed tape is a great idea! I watched your How to Make Seed Tape Video with your little granddaughters making the seed tape. I just finished making my own seed tape out of paper towels. Thanks a lot for the tip!

Hello, I have a question. I have never planted seeds. It's first when I have to plant the seeds in what month? Thank you 😊

It depends on where you live and what seeds you're starting. This video can help: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZrmFrNKYlqu0nqM.html

My collection of gardening equipment is like yours. Some I use and others I don't. I guess you never know unless you try them. Your Amazon link doesn't connect me to your list of seed starting equipment. Is there another way to get the link? Thank you.

The Amazon link doesn't link to specific equipment, just the basic site.

Thank you Scott for your videos. But I need Help! My wife said I've gone nuts. I've decided to go all out this year. I've had a pond dug last week for my Aquaponics System. Its 4 ft by 4 ft by 60 ft long. And will be covered by a 20 ft by 80 ft hoop house. The part she thinks is crazy is I ordered 1400 sun patien plugs. And to be quite honest I'm not really ready for them😐 and they are coming at the end of the week. The greenhouse won't be up for a couple weeks and I live in zone 7. I have 6 in pots but no where to put 1400 of them. I plan to used your recipe for potting mix. My question is; the plugs come 110 plugs to a tray and I can get the 36 ( 2 in square) trays from a local nursery supply shop and I have a grow station in my basement with enough shelving and lights for all the trays. Will it work to transplant the plugs into the 2 in trays with your potting mix until I'm ready to transplant them in the 6 in pots and move them to the greenhouse? Thanks from drowning in plugs🙂.

That sounds like a big undertaking. It should work to transplant them into 2 in trays. That will probably be better than letting them dry out with no place to go.

Gardener Scott, I’m trying to learn from multiple u tube channels. I want to make the initial investment into good choices. I put together my grow shelf today that I special ordered. Added my LED lights with all the recommended kelvins and lumens. Now I am confused on if I have to go with the 72 cells and transplant later, or can I just start out in a 2 inch pot and not have to do the work of transplanting mainly speaking of peppers. Is there a reason other than space that you use the 72 cell?

For me, there are three reasons. 1. Space, as you mentioned. 2. Not all seeds will germinate, especially if it’s older seed. I don’t want to have larger pots go empty. 3. I start my seeds in sterile seed starting mix, which has no nutrients, but also no diseases, and transplant into more fertile potting soil when the plants are a bit tougher. Of course you can just start in 2” pots, and recycle the failures as long as there is no disease and you’re using potting soil, or willing to fertilize weekly.

I do all my seed starting in 2' cells except tomatoes, I put those in bigger plastic cups(same size as red solo cups). I hate potting up to bigger cells, IMO it's a waste of time.

Every gardener does things differently (and sometimes differently every year!). I just watched a couple of videos on seed starting on the Garden Fundamentals you tube channel (check it out very good info) and he does most of his starting in larger pots with a multitude of seed and thins them or separates them later. A lot has to do with space both in your seed starting area/room and outside in your garden. I mean, I have enough room right now for two or three tomato plants, not a dozen or more. So I'm going to grow those in solo cups and transplant them straight in my growing containers out in the garden rather than start them in 72 cell trays. In fact, I don't think I'm doing anything in 72s this year. 24 cells mostly, some solo cups and some baggies for germination which will be then planted in bigger pots or directly outside. One thing I'd suggest if you're starting in 2 inch pots is to keep a close eye on moisture levels (bigger cells will retain water longer, especially when your seedlings are small; the opposite problem raised by small 72s which dry out fast).

Space is the primary reason and it allows me to germinate many seeds.

I don't mean to be an ass, here, but what is the purpose of this video? I was under the impression it was a seed starting video. Apparently not. I have come to depend on you for solid, informative gardening videos. This is the 2nd video I've watch in as many days that made no sense to me. Please, please, go back to solid, informative gardening videos.
