Seed Trays with Built In Lighting 💡🌱

I purchased some 12 pack seed trays that contain LED grow lights. I'm curious how well this small all- in- one package works for seed starting.
I will find out by growing the same plants in almost identical seed trays under my conventional LED grow lights. Follow along to find out how this works.

You have done something in your video that no one else has done in the ones I have seen so far and it's test the light level of the included grow lights and it has helped me realize that the somewhat more expensive ac infinity seed tray with humility dome and light will be the way im going to go because as strange as it is my home has no windows facing the direction needed to start seed in or grow flowers of any kind for that matter thanks for your video

That’s why I try to do that. With these cheap little units the light quality is often more supplemental than “on its own” lighting. They still have their place for a lot of us, but not everyone. I’m glad you found this helpful.

Good-day Prairie Plantgirl!👋 You are looking lovely as usual. 🦋 This is a great experiment. I enjoy following you experiments. 🙂 Usually, I winter sow and start my seeds in my kitchen window. I've never used grow lights...gonna do so for the first time this spring...well, over winter now. Like, I never thought about growing lettuce indoors...gonna do so now! Thanks for the idea!😃 I purchased the green seed starter set this summer and did fall starts in them. I found them too hard to get my starts out of and too small of an amount of soil for some seedlings.😕 I plan to try them again this winter...to grow onions from seed; however, I plan to go back to using recycled cell trays and small pots to do my spring starts. Howdy to Mr. Buster!🐕

Lettuce is a great thing to grow indoors. It doesn’t require quite as much light as other plants and has a somewhat short life so it doesn’t get out of control or take over your house. The smaller seed trays are what I prefer for slow growing things. I will likely have to pot the lettuce up after a few weeks, but that will make room for new seeds.

@@PrairiePlantgirl I figured the onions might do better in the cell trays I purchased since they grow slower.🧅 Yes, lettuce seems ike a good candidate too.🥬

I see many gardeners start onion sets successfully in this type of tray. I prefer seeding my onions thickly in open trays. Either way this small size will work well with a slow grower like onions.

I've seen video reviews of these on Amazon. Most excited by the results but with 1 or 2 inch long stems attached to the primary leaves which should be just above soil level. Although these are a good concept, those lights need to be lower down which cannot be done with them permanently attached to the domes. Light intensity wont make a blind bit of difference and still wont be powerful enough. They will still germinate like in the videos I've seen, but all the seedling will do is "Bolt" Spindly stems they will be susceptible to damping off.

I just couldn’t resist giving it a try. It could free up space on my light shelves for the larger plants if I could start seeds in these trays. They would be good for starting a few things in the kitchen or a closet (without having to hang lights) for people without a dedicated space.
