We're still having trouble getting fields planted after nearly four inches of rain in a few weeks. The rain has ended the drought but it's creating new problems as we race the clock to get our oats and barley in the ground. #familyfarm, #oats, #farming, #plantingseason,

Glad to see you got the oats in on Monday....It's dried out enough this week, I think we can get to discing and picking rocks this weekend. Thanks Dave.

Good job on the oats planting. Gotta do what you gotta do to get it in when the weather's challenging.

Good to see you back in the fields…12 days since we got back to the lake and it’s raining more than I can remember for mid May!

Thanks: welcome back. We’re back to normal spring rainfall. We seeded May 13, which is right on the 10-year average for us. Still have that wet field…it may not go until Memorial Day.

I checked out Deon oats. I see Albert Lea seed sells it. That is a old company since I remember cloth sacks in the 70s. I don't see much action around their facility. Thank you Dave. I probably would have plowed through that strip. I guess plant grass seed, and don't mess with it ?

I’ve seen Albert Lea seed online…sounds like a big operation that serves a lot of little distributors. I remember those clothes sacks too. Not sure if it was seed or flower or both.

Just sneak back in later on the wet spots. Quite a few guys have to do that here.. or just work around the spots. Getting it in anyway 👍

Yeah, it’s nice to check one field off the list.

You had to push it a little to get it in but it looks good. We have some of those spots that on a normal to wet year that never really dry up.
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, it was still wet in several spots but the bulk of the field was OK. Hardly any dust which is a sign I was pushing it.

Some years you just have to go around the mud holes and come back later. I like to roll my fields too. Is your New Holland an LS tractor with New Holland decals on?

I can’t tell. The T4 was built in Italy in 2018 and looks very different from the 2010 TD5050 so maybe it is an LS. No obvious reference in the book or serial number tag. It looks like an LS. 75 hp so no def.

How does your rye look dave? Cows got it mowed down yet?
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn 2 ай бұрын
Rye looks great in the west field but spotty in the east field. I seeded the east field too early and it was awfully dry. The pasture rye is very strong but I don’t want to let the cows out into that section until I’m sure they are big enough to fight off the timber wolves…maybe June 10.

Yeah, we should have seeded it in winter rye last fall.

If I may ask Dave, how expensive is the seed this year? I talked to a local farmer who said his alfalfa seed this year was $650 / bag! Yikes!
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn
@Rollinghillsfarmsmn 2 ай бұрын
Wow, must be large bags. We buy 50lb bags and paid $155 for alfalfa and $170 for 70/30 mix of Timothy and Alsike clover. Deon oats are $17 bushel.

@@Rollinghillsfarmsmn , this is most likely RoundUp resistant or something. If you were selling the hay, I don’t think you could get your investment back I don’t like to use chemicals. Not one bit! My grandpa got the shingles and nearly lost an eye after spraying 2-4 D, which is only one molecule away from what we have come to call agent orange. That’s not nearly enough difference for me Thanks Dave Good luck in the fields!
